
‘India to have 123 million EVs on the road by 2032 under best-case scenario'
New Delhi: India will likely have 123 million electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by 2032 under the best-case scenario, a report published by India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and Customized Energy Solutions (CES) said on Tuesday.
The adoption of EVs becomes critical, as the world's fifth-largest economy prioritizes sustainable development and races to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, the report said. This can bolster India's economy while supporting the ambitious target set for 2030—EV penetration of 30%.
The report, titled "India Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Market Overview," outlined the potential impact of this transition on the country's infrastructure and energy landscape.

'By 2032, IESA and CES project that India's on-road EV stock could reach approximately 49 million (worst case), 60 million (business-as-usual), or 123 million (NEV scenario)," said Vinayak Walimbe, managing director of Customized Energy Solutions India Pvt. Ltd.
The National EV Targets (NEV) estimates are based on the assumption that by 2030, EV penetration reaches 80% for electric two- and three-wheelers, 30% for private electric four-wheelers, 70% for commercial cars, and 40% for electric buses, he added.
EV penetration refers to the share of electric vehicles among total vehicles in a system.
By 2032, the projected stock of electric cars is expected to rise to about 4.3 million, 5.8 million, and 10 million units under the worst case, business as usual (BAU), and NEV scenarios, respectively, the report said. In addition, electric buses and trucks could grow to around 450,000, 750,000, and 1.1 million units under the above conditions.

The report estimated that India's cumulative on-road lithium-ion electric vehicle (EV) population became nearly twelvefold to 4.4 million in 2024 from 0.35 million in 2019.
This rapid growth, it said, has been fuelled by supportive government policies, such as the FAME-II scheme, which offered demand incentives for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, along with capital subsidies for public charging infrastructure.
FAME stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles. The Union government implemented two iterations of the FAME scheme from FY15 to FY24.

Notably, the personal electric four-wheeler (E4W) segment has emerged as a key driver of the country's expanding private and home charging ecosystem.

As per the report, in 2024, there were approximately 220,000 personal electric four-wheelers (E4Ws) on roads, most of which depended on Type-2 AC chargers installed in residential areas.
By that same year, India had an estimated 320,000 private Type-2 AC chargers, with 70% being 3.3 kW units, 28% 7.4 kW units, and the remaining 11-22 kW units classified as high-capacity. India had roughly 76,000 cumulative public and captive charging points in 2024, with a combined installed capacity of 1.3 GW, the report said.
To accommodate this surge in EVs, India must significantly expand its charging infrastructure, increasing from 76,000 points in 2024 to between 0.9 million and 2.1 million by 2032, the report said.
The IESA-CES report further highlighted that electric two- and three-wheelers together accounted for over 93% of India's electric vehicles in 2024. In contrast, electric four-wheelers represented around 6%, while electric buses and trucks comprised less than 1%, as per the report.
Debmalya Sen, president of IESA, said, "To support the projected EV growth, we can anticipate that India's cumulative installed EV charging points—public and captive—will need to grow nearly 12 to 28 times, from around 76,000 in 2024 to between 0.9 million and 2.1 million by 2032. Installed charging capacity must also scale more than 17 times, rising from 1.3 GW to 23 GW, depending on EV adoption and infrastructure utilization levels."

Government launches skill training programs in green energy and electric vehicles
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): The government's Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Shell India have launched a Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV) training program aimed at equipping students and faculty with future-ready capabilities in green energy and e-mobility. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said in a release that the initiative will be implemented by Edunet Foundation, Shell's training partner, across select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka on June 12, 2025. The release added under the DGT-Shell India collaboration, green skill training will be delivered through a structured multi-tier model across select NSTIs and ITIs. In the first phase, the program includes a 240-hour advanced EV Technician course at 4 NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs equipped with Shell-supported labs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module at additional ITIs without physical labs. Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT jointly developed the curriculum, which covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols. The initiative also includes Training of Trainers (ToT) for over 250 instructors, certification co-branded by Shell and DGT, and structured placement support to enhance industry readiness. A key highlight of the initiative is the establishment of specialised EV skill labs within select ITIs and NSTIs. These labs are designed to offer hands-on training and expert-led sessions aligned with industry standards. Beyond lab-based learning, the program also provides placement support and co-branded certifications to successful participants, enhancing their employability in the green energy and EV sectors. The Government of India has been actively advancing Green Energy and Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption in line with its net-zero ambitions. Flagship initiatives like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme have played a pivotal role in accelerating EV uptake, enhancing infrastructure, and offering targeted incentives. Complementing these national efforts, states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have introduced their own EV policies to fast-track the transition to electric mobility, foster local ecosystems, and generate green jobs. These developments underscore the growing demand for a skilled workforce in the green energy and EV sectors. 311 properties acquired, ₹283 crore disbursed for Old City Metro line
Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) has informed that 311 properties have been acquired and ₹283 crore disbursed so far even as there has been a good progress in the demolition of properties and debris clearance in the Old City stretch in the 7.5-kilometre stretch from MG Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayanagutta as part of the proposed Phase-II Metro Rail line expansion project. Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II covering 76.4 km spread across five corridors, including extending the existing first phase lines of 69.2 km in the capital region, at an estimated cost of ₹24,269 crore is currently undergoing appraisal at various ministries at the Centre for the proposed joint venture project. HAML Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy said there has been total cooperation from the property owners for the work with the government paying an attractive compensation package to them, mostly as consent awards. The officials involved in the demolitions of non-heritage structures have been working day-and-night carefully by undertaking major tasks during the night avoiding any disruption of traffic, he explained. There are several challenges involved in carrying out the work in the Old City because of the close proximity of buildings almost touching each other and the presence of intertwined electrical, telecom and other cables, pointed out Mr. Reddy. The MD was especially appreciative of the work put in by HAML women officials for being patient with the affected property owners explaining about the consent awards and supervising the road expansion job after dark. He reiterated that appropriate engineering solutions are being adopted to protect the heritage structures and that as assured to the High Court, no heritage structure will be touched or demolished. HAML has submitted to the HC that no heritage structure is being touched or being demolished and that the Metro Rail alignment is far away from Charminar and Falaknuma precincts. But, there has been a social media misinformation campaign which is unfortunate. The matter is sub-judice and this needs to be kept in mind, he added.

Ather's entry-level electric scooter's headlight design patent filed
This will be the first time that Ather Energy will mount the headlamp on the hadnelbar instead of the apron. Check Offers Ather Energy has filed a design patent for a headlight of the new electric scooter that is currently under development. The brand earlier confirmed that they are working on a new EL platform. Scooters based on this electric scooter will sit below the Rizta electric scooter. The design of the headlamp is rectangular, which is surrounded by a shroud. The headlamp will use LED units; there could probably be two LEDs on offer. There would be LED Daytime Running Lamps on offer as well. Moreover, it is important to note that this scooter is the first one from the manufacturer to house the headlamp on the handlebars. The Rizta and the 450 series of electric scooters have mounted the headlamp on the front aprons. Ather has a new manufacturing plant in Aurangabad. It is expected that the new facility will have a production capacity of 1 million two-wheelers per year and will span 100 acres. Ather Energy introduces the Rizta, which is fitted with a 2.9 kWh battery that can travel a distance of up to 123 km on a single charge. In contrast, the model featuring a 3.7 kWh battery pack offers an improved range of 159 km. Both variants are driven by the same PMS electric motor found in the 450S electric scooter. The motor in the Rizta enables acceleration from 0 to 40 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, achieving a top speed of 80 km/h. Additionally, Ather states that the 2.9 kWh battery can be charged from a fully depleted state to 80 per cent in 5 hours and 45 minutes when using standard chargers, while the 3.7 kWh version requires 4 hours and 30 minutes for a full charge. Furthermore, the larger battery comes with fast charging capabilities. By using the Ather Grid, users can gain 15 km of range in only 10 minutes.
