China Affirms Support for Egypt's Sovereignty Over Suez Canal Amid Controversial Trump Remarks

China has voiced firm support for Egypt's sovereignty over the Suez Canal following controversial remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested American ships should be allowed to use the strategic waterway free of charge due to the United States' historical contributions.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to a question from "Beijing Youth Daily" regarding Trump's post on his Truth Social account.
In the post, Trump asserted that 'American Ships, both Military and Commercial, should be allowed to travel, free of charge, through the Panama and Suez Canals,' claiming those canals 'would not exist without the United States of America.'
He further stated that he had instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to 'immediately take care of the situation.'
In response, Lin Jian said, 'We noted relevant reports. Egypt has indisputable sovereignty over and right to manage and operate the Suez Canal. We firmly support the Egyptian government and people in defending sovereignty and their legitimate rights and interests.'
He added, 'We oppose any acts or statements of bullying.'

Iranian missiles hit Tel Aviv on June 14, 2025- photo circulated on social media platforms CAIRO – 14 June 2025: Iran launched a devastating missile attack on central Israel on early hours of Saturday in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes earlier that day targeting Tehran and Iranian nuclear facilities. The Israeli strikes reportedly killed hundreds, including military leaders and nuclear scientists. Dozens of Iranian missiles fell on Tel Aviv, causing widespread destruction to residential buildings and forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes. Three Israelis were killed and more than 170 others injured so far according to the Israeli MDA Ambulance amid continuing the military escalation between the both sides. Iranian TV reported that about 60 civilians, including 20 children, were killed in yesterday's Zionist attack on a 14-story residential complex in Tehran. Other more than 70 Iranian were killed on Friday. Also, Iranian media outlets reported that besides killing military leaders and nuclear scientists by the Israeli strikes on Friday, more military leaders in Iran were killed including General Gholam Reza Mharabi, deputy head of the intelligence department, and General Mehdi Rabbani, Deputy Chief of the Operations Department of the Iranian Armed Forces. Islamic Revolution Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed Brigadier General Brigadier General Seyyed Majid Mousavi as the new commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force, Mehr News Agency reported. Iranian military spokesman Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi was quoted as saying by Iranian media: 'Our next missile strikes will be 20 times more powerful than our previous attacks and will include 2,000 missiles' against Israel Since early hours on Friday, June 13, 2025, Israel has launched hundreds of missiles against Iran, especially the nuclear facilities. Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced in a statement that The Israeli attack on the Natanz facility in Isfahan, central Iran. Also, Israeli launched strikes against Isfahan nuclear facilities several times but no increase in off-site radiation levels has been reported so far according to the United Nation nuclear watchdog 'the Interntaional Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'. Mehr News Agency reported that Israeli airstrikes targeted Tabriz city in Iran on Saturday, while Iran launched four waves of retaliatory attacks on Israel.

Jordan, Syria and Lebanon reopened their airspace on Saturday, a day after imposing closures as Israel and Iran traded fire. On Friday, Israel launched strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, prompting retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli cities. The escalation led to airspace closures across Israel, Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Syria. Global airlines cancelled or rerouted flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran and other destinations in the region amid the shutdown. The US military has assisted Israel in intercepting incoming missiles. Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon share borders with Israel, but only Jordan has formal diplomatic relations with it. Syria was long ruled by Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Iran, but has since his ouster in December been led by Islamist former rebels. Following Assad's overthrow, Israel's forces occupied the UN-patrolled demilitarised zone in the Golan Heights, and has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria. Lebanon hosts Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shia group that was battered in a war with Israel that saw the latter escalate strikes and invade southern Lebanon. Israel has continued to carry out strikes on Lebanon in violation of a ceasefire that came into effect in late 2024, and still occupies areas in the south of the country. "Jordan has reopened its airspace starting 7:30 am (0430 GMT)," the chairman of the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, Haitham Misto, said in a statement. Lebanon's Transport Minister Fayez Rassamni announced the reopening of the country's airspace from 10:00 am (0700 GMT) Saturday.
