India's response to Pahalgam should not be a war: Vance
Washington: US Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington hopes that India will respond carefully to avoid broader regional conflict following last week's terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. He also said that the US hoped Pakistan would cooperate with India to hunt down Pakistan-based terrorists.
In an interview with Fox News, Vance made his public remark on the attack, which left 26 people dead. Notably, Vance and his family was in India on a four-day visit when the carnage - the worst since the Pulwama attack on CRPF personnel in 2019 - took place. "Our hope here is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that doesn't lead to a broader regional conflict," Vance said on Fox News's 'Special Report with Bret Baier' show.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Canada on Monday to participate in the G7 summit in Kananaskis, marking his first visit to the country in ten years. PM Modi is currently on a four-day tour covering three nations — Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. After completing the first leg of his trip in Cyprus, he will head to Canada at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This will be Modi's sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 summit, which is scheduled to take place from June 16 to 17 in Kananaskis. 'At the summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues," the Ministry of External Affairs said in New Delhi. PM Modi is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. His visit comes a little over a month after India's Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks. The Prime Minister last visited Canada in 2015, a trip that helped elevate India-Canada relations to a strategic partnership. In 2024, bilateral trade in goods between the two countries reached USD 8.6 billion, with India exporting goods worth USD 4.2 billion and importing USD 4.4 billion. Trade in services stood at USD 14.3 billion, with India's exports valued at USD 2.5 billion and imports at USD 11.8 billion. The upcoming G7 summit takes place against a backdrop of escalating global tensions, including the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel and trade disputes driven by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies. Trump arrived in Kananaskis on Sunday for the summit and is expected to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday. The US President will also hold bilateral talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo during the summit. Canada took over the G7's rotating presidency on January 1, 2025. This year's gathering marks the 50th anniversary of the G7 summit.

A Joint Declaration made after talks between PM Modi and Cyprus President reaffirmed the strategic bond between the two countries with the two leaders agreeing that an Action Plan is to be prepared in order to guide bilateral relations for the next five years. PM Modi's visit to Cyprus, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over two decades, marked a historic milestone and reaffirmed the deep and enduring friendship between the two nations. 'The visit celebrates not only a shared history, but a forward-looking partnership, rooted in a joint strategic vision and mutual trust and respect,' the declaration said. PM Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday as part of his three-nation visit. The two countries agreed to enhance trade, defence and technology partnership and establish direct air connectivity. Both leaders noted with satisfaction the progress in ongoing bilateral cooperation and expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to flourish, promoting peace, stability, and prosperity across their regions and beyond.
