Nasser Hussain stresses on Liam Dawsons inclusion in Englands squad for T20 World Cup 2026
London [UK], June 7 (ANI): Former captain Nasser Hussain has urged England to pick seasoned left-arm spinner Liam Dawson in their 2026 T20 World Cup squad after he delivered a "masterclass" in the series-opening win over West Indies on Friday.
In his 12th T20I and his first in three years for England, Dawson was adjudged the Player of the Match after returning with figures 4/20 for the hosts in their 21-run triumph against the West Indies.
The T20 World Cup is set to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year, two Asian countries known for their spin-favouring conditions. Despite his sporadic career with the Three Lions, Hussain has advocated for the inclusion of the 35-year-old ball tweaker in the marquee tournament.
"There has been a lot of people asking for him to come back into the side for a number of years. He's done it for Hampshire and for franchises around the world. He thinks like a batter because he is one. He goes quick, quick with his variations and then lobs one upright on a length," Hussain said, as quoted from Sky Sports.
"He has that sense of when a batter is coming at him. I thought it was a masterclass of left-arm spin bowling. It's great to have him back in the side. And with the [2026] T20 World Cup coming up in India and Sri Lanka, he's got to play," he added.
England captain Harry Brook, who secured his fourth consecutive victory in as many white-ball games, is playing his cards with the T20 World Cup in view. Before competing in the highly anticipated tournament, England will feature in 14 T20Is.
"We don't want to look too far ahead, but we've got to trial some things like this. The next World Cup is going to be in Sri Lanka and India. We're not completely set on this structure for the team, but it's worth a go, and it worked this time, Brook said of the move to play only two front-line seamers for the first time in home conditions.
"I just think that having two very good spinners - front-line spinners - makes a massive difference. These two [Dawson and Adil Rashid] have been playing the game for so long, they know T20 cricket, they know the grounds, and they've played against so many of these boys, that having them both in the side will help us going forward," he added. Turkey inflict third straight loss on World Cup hosts USA
The United States suffered their third straight loss under coach Mauricio Pochettino as they fell to a 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday. Pochettino, whose team lost to Panama and Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League finals in March, was without several starters, including captain and AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic. Almost a year out from the start of the World Cup, which the USA is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino used the match to take a look at some of those on the fringes of his squad. The visitors' pressure paid off in the 24th minute but it was gifted to them by USA midfielder Johnny Cardoso who, attempting to play out from the back, clipped a pass against Guler which ricocheted past Freese and into the net. Less then three minutes later, Turkey had the lead after the USA defence was unable to clear and the ball fell to Kerem Akturkoglu who drove home. Pochettino's men were much better after the break though and were unfortunate not to draw level - Max Arfsten headed wide from close range and Patrick Agyemang had a shot on target but the best opportunity fell to Malik Tillman. Substitute Tyler Adams floated a lovely cross to the back post but with all the goal to aim at, Tillman headed straight at Turkey keeper Berke Ozer. As the USA pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Turkey had a late chance to make it 3-1 but after a swift counter-attack Baris Alper Yilmaz screwed his shot wide. "For the first time for a few camps there were more positives than negatives," said midfielder Adams. "I think we have a lot of room for growth, if you asked me in March, I would say that we were far away but after a performance like that, there's a lot more positives that we can take away," he added. The USA face Switzerland in Nashville on Tuesday.

Asian champion 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji leads India's 6-gold show in Taiwan Open
Asian champion Jyothi Yarraji won the women's 100m hurdles race with yet another impressive time as India won six gold medals in the Taiwan Open international athletics competition here on Saturday. National record holder Yarraji clocked 12.99 seconds to pocket the gold at the Taipei Municipal Stadium, ahead of Japanese runners Asuka Terada (13.04 seconds) and Chisato Kiyoyama (13.10 seconds), who took the silver and bronze respectively. The 25-year-old Yarraji had won gold in the Asian Championships in South Korea on May 29 with a time of 12.96 seconds. Her national record stands at 12.78 seconds. Another national record holder, Tejas Shirse also won gold in the men's 110m hurdles, clocking 13.52 seconds, the second fastest time of his career. Local athletes Hsieh Yuan-kai (13.72 seconds) and Kuei-Ru Chen (13.75 seconds) won the silver and bronze respectively. The 23-year-old Shirse's national record stands 13.41 seconds. India's best 4x100m relay quartet of Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar and Amlan Borgohain won gold, clocking 38.75 seconds, just six-hundredth of a second outside of the national record of 38.69 seconds set by the same team at the National Relay Carnival in Chandigarh earlier this year.
