Wisconsin football announces date, TV info for 2026 opener vs. Notre Dame at Lambeau Field
Wisconsin will open its 2026 football season on Sunday, Sept. 6, against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Initially scheduled for Oct. 3, 2020, the COVID-19-impacted contest is the second of a two-game series. Notre Dame won the first meeting 41-13 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois, in 2021. The 2026 meeting between the two teams was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5. The latest update moved the game back one day, to Sunday of college football's opening weekend.
Next season's opener will mark the first time the Badgers, or any other college football program, have suited up for a game at Lambeau Field since Sept. 3, 2016. In that appearance, Wisconsin upset then-No. 5 LSU 16-14 behind dominant efforts from T.J. Watt, Jack Cichy and Corey Clement.
The Fighting Irish, captained by head coach Marcus Freeman, are fresh off a College Football Playoff national title loss to Ohio State. While the 2026 squad will look much different, Freeman has the program operating as one of the best in the country.
If the Badgers chalk up another 5-7 or 6-6 mark in 2025, the 2026 season opener could become a measuring stick for how the program lines up against the nation's top programs. Wisconsin does square off against Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana in 2025, so fans will absorb even more information about the program's trajectory ahead of the bout with Notre Dame.
Luke Fickell's program opens the 2025 season against Miami (Ohio) at Camp Randall Stadium on Aug. 25. The program vanquished Western Michigan 28-14 in the 2024 season opener, Buffalo 38-17 in 2023 and Illinois State 38-0 in 2022. The game at Lambeau will likely become the first time UW opens the season against a ranked opponent since 2021, when it fell to Penn State 16-10.
The 2026 contest against the Fighting Irish is slated to be televised live by NBC.

Will Steelers OLB T.J. Watt return in Week 2 of OTAs — or is a hold-in inevitable?
Will Steelers OLB T.J. Watt return in Week 2 of OTAs — or is a hold-in inevitable? T.J. Watt missed the first week of Steelers OTAs as contract negotiations continue to muddy the waters in Pittsburgh — but could the former 2021 Defensive Player of the Year return in Week 2 of practices? After no-showing the first three team activities, Watt has three more opportunities to attend in Week 2 — OTAs 4–6 on June 3, 4, and 5, respectively — before many begin to worry that another hold-in is on the way. Back in 2021, Watt staged his infamous hold-in that saw him refuse to participate in team practices until he received a new contract days before the regular season began — and issues surrounding this next extension could get even uglier. While it's wise for Watt to avoid injuring himself before a potential $40 million-plus payday, his teammates — such as C Zach Frazier, OLB Alex Highsmith, and CB Darius Slay Jr. — have spoken volumes about the importance of being at OTAs, even if they're voluntary. Should Watt miss out on Week 2 OTAs, Steelers mandatory minicamp from June 10 to 12 will give some insight into what his negotiation strategy will look like for the rest of the offseason. Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs
Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Fans of the Oregon Ducks are likely clamoring for more after enjoying one of the best seasons in the history of the football program. They navigated the regular season, going undefeated through their first year in the Big Ten Conference after moving from the Pac-12. Advertisement The Ducks continued to impress after defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Big Ten Championship game. Their dominance landed them the No. 1 overall pick in the College Football Playoff. However, the extra time off may have been detrimental, as they went from December 7, until New Year's Day without a game after four months playing essentially every week and fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were coming off a win over Tennessee. Former Oregon QB turning heads in NFL OTAs Dillon Gabriel was the leader of the high-flying Oregon offense and was eventually selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. However, a different former Ducks quarterback has been turning heads in NFL OTAs. Advertisement According to FOX 8 New Orleans' Sean Fazende, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has made an impression. "Shough looks very comfortable with vertical routes & out-breaking patterns," Fazende said on "His best throw may have been an incompletion where he rolled to his left and threw off platform to the sideline. Right now, not quite as comfortable in intermediate middle of field." Shough spent three seasons with the Ducks. In his first two, he was backing up Justin Herbert before being handed the reins. He eventually transferred to Texas Tech and then Louisville before the Saints took him in the second round. After Derek Carr's sudden retirement, Shough is now a candidate to win the starting job with Spencer Rattler. Advertisement It remains to be seen what kind of chance Shough truly has to win the starting job, but after watching Rattler in parts of last season, the Saints could decide to give him a chance. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 1, 2025, where it first appeared.
