City of Windsor set to open its outdoor pools Saturday
The City of Windsor is making final preparations to open its outdoor swimming pools for the summer.
Windsor's Executive Director of Parks, Recreation, and Facilities, James Chacko, said the outdoor pools will open on Saturday.
'There is a lot of work that's involved with opening the outdoor pools, not only getting them ready from a mechanical standpoint, but the biggest challenge is ensuring we have enough lifeguards,' he said.
'That was something that became critical during and after COVID. So many of our lifeguards are high school students.'
Chacko said there are still a few days of school left.
'School ends in the middle of the week; we bring in everyone for some additional practical training to get them ready and get them site-specific on the Thursday and Friday, and that allows for the pool to open at full capacity on Saturday, the 28th,' he said.
Chacko said the city will have a full complement of lifeguards to staff all the pools this summer.
'It was the challenge during COVID and post-COVID; there were so many people who weren't up on the training,' he said.
'That has now been rectified. We have a full complement onboard, and we look forward to having all of our outdoor pools, along with our indoor pools, along with Adventure Bay, continue to operate.'
The City of Windsor has five outdoor pools: Atkinson Pool at 2005 Riverside Drive West, Central Pool at 3301 Woodland Avenue, Mic Mac Pool at 1125 Prince Road, Remington Booster Pool at 701 Edinborough Street, and Riverside Centennial Pool at 6695 Wyandotte Street East.

Canadian men to face No. 14 Colombia in New Jersey friendly during FIFA October window
Canada will face No. 14 Colombia in a men's soccer friendly during the October FIFA international window. The game is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., home of Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls. LaSalle student wins $5,000 OMHA-Dairy Farmers of Ontario bursary
A LaSalle student has won a $5,000 Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA)-Dairy Farmers of Ontario bursary. Evan Odrcich, a student at St. Thomas of Villanova, was one of eight high school graduates chosen across Ontario for making a big impact within his school and in the community. The scholarship acknowledges hockey players, coaches, and referees within the OMHA and their grades and extra curricular activities. Odrcich is a member of his school's robotics team as the main driver, which made it to the World Championships in Houston, Texas last year. As the main driver, he is responsible for controlling the robot on the field. 'It's a very bust schedule, a huge commitment, Odrcich's father, Mark Odrcich, said. 'Most evenings and weekends, he's with his robotics team. They're designing, building, driving, and competing with their robotics.' During his time at Villanova, Odrcich competed in the University of Windsor's Science Olympiad, where he earned first place in physics and third overall. He also has more than 500 hours of community service and helps with Villanova's Sound and Tech club, where multiple theatre productions have been held. Odrcich's next steps will be to study engineering at Queen's University. 'Sometimes when I speak to him, I forget I'm talking to a Grade 12 student because his maturity belies his age,' said David Janisse, Odrcich's teacher. In his spare time outside of school, he is a skater with the LaSalle Skaters in the OMHA, recording no penalties in three years. Beyond that, he works as a referee. 'I think my perspective as an official helps me know how to avoid taking penalties and try and play a clean game,' said Odrcich. The $5,000 bursary will help towards Odrcich's post-secondary endeavours.
