AIIMS-Rishikesh doc booked for distributing ‘Eid sweets' day after Pahalgam attack

Time of India17-05-2025

Dehradun: A 27-year-old junior resident doctor at AIIMS-Rishikesh has been charged with "
promoting enmity
between different groups" after he allegedly distributed sweets at the hospital on April 23, a day after 26 people were killed in the terror attack in Pahalgam. The complaint was filed by Rajendra Pandey, Rishikesh district president of the
Vishwa Hindu Parishad
(VHP), who alleged that the act "hurt people's sentiments" and was "suspected to be a celebration of the heinous killing of tourists".
When contacted, Pandey told TOI that the doctor distributed sweets to nursing staff and colleagues in the trauma centre's emergency room. "When one of the staffers asked him why he was distributing sweets, he said they were for Eid. However, Eid was celebrated a month ago and it seemed odd," he said. Pandey added that they held a demonstration on the hospital premises in late April, demanding action from the hospital administration.
Naresh Uniyal, a Bajrang Dal member who accompanied Pandey to lodge the complaint, said they wrote to the DGP after there was no response from the hospital management. "We also informed the CM's office, as the act reflected anti-national sentiment. A case was finally filed on Friday," he said.
The FIR against the doctor (name withheld as allegations are being probed) was filed at Rishikesh Kotwali police station under BNS sections 196(1)(a) and 196(1)(b) (promoting enmity and disharmony between different religious groups), and 197(1)(a) (making unfounded insinuations against a group).

The doctor, who is originally from West Bengal and has since returned home on the advice of his seniors, has denied all charges. "All allegations about me distributing sweets to mark the Pahalgam killings are not only baseless but deeply hurtful," he told TOI. "I came back to the hospital on April 8 after celebrating Eid with my family. On April 23, while working in the emergency room, a nursing officer requested sweets and biryani in celebration of Eid.
I agreed as it had been a friendly tradition at AIIMS to share sweets or delicacies on festivals or personal occasions. So, I ordered sweets and food for the nursing staff. Some didn't eat, but most enjoyed it." He added that a female doctor had distributed sweets just a day earlier to celebrate the birth of her child.
The doctor said that on April 25, a nursing staff member informed him that "rumours" were circulating about the intent behind the sweet distribution. "I immediately informed the administrative officer and other seniors about it. I even confronted the person suspected of spreading the rumour, but he denied it. The next day, police summoned both of us, and it was decided that the matter would be closed amicably."
He said he left for home afterward and only later learned that a formal case had been filed. "It has caused me immense mental stress, and I am planning to lodge a defamation complaint against those responsible," he added.

16 arrested in Assam over alleged illegal cattle slaughter during Eid

Guwahati: A total of 16 people were arrested for "illegally" slaughtering cattle during Eid a day ago, said chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday. He said cattle parts were recovered from multiple locations across Assam, including near Cotton University in Guwahati Five illegal slaughter sites were found in two districts of Barak Valley — Gumrah, Silchar, and Lakhipur in Cachar district, and Badarpur and Banga in Karimganj district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The CM, in a post on his X handle, wrote: "While our Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, it equally upholds the rule of law and public order. This Eid-ul-Zuha, disturbing incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and recovery of cattle parts were reported from multiple locations across Assam." Sarma said nine arrests were made in Cachar and seven in Sribhumi district, with additional reports of cattle parts being found in Dhubri, Hojai, and Sribhumi, as well as near Cotton University in Guwahati. The CM said the state govt is committed to "preserving communal harmony, but not at the cost of lawlessness or cruelty". "Please be clear that strict action will be taken against all violators — irrespective of faith or background," he added Meanwhile, people from the Hindu community blocked roads in Hojai on Sunday, alleging that pieces of meat were deliberately thrown by miscreants in certain areas on Saturday night, a police officer said. While beef consumption is not illegal in the state, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, prohibits cattle slaughter and beef sales in majority-Hindu, Jain, or Sikh localities, as well as within a five-km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery). On Sunday, a large number of people from the Hindu and Muslim communities came out in Hojai to hold protests separately. They blocked roads and clashed with the police, the officer said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "While the Hindus blocked roads in the Barpukhuri area, where suspected cattle meat pieces were found at three places on Saturday, Muslims also came out and blocked a road at Bhuyanpatty as a countermeasure," he said. A section of the mob at Bhuyanpatty clashed with the police, prompting officers to use "mild lathi-charge" to disperse the protesters. However, the situation was brought under control with additional security forces deployed in the area. In Guwahati, police said some pieces of meat wrapped in a polythene packet were found near the Cotton University. The sample has been sent for forensic testing. "No comment can be made until reports are available," the police said.

UP man dies after ‘offering himself as ‘sacrifice', police probe

A police inquiry has been launched into the death of a 60-year-old man who allegedly died by suicide after slitting his throat with a knife on Bakrid on Saturday. Police said a suicide note was recovered in which the deceased, identified as Ish Mohammad, purportedly wrote that he was 'offering' himself as a 'sacrifice to the Almighty'. Additional Superintendent of Police (Deoria) Arvind Kumar Verma, said prima facie, it appeared the man took the extreme step on his own. According to police, they received information from the control room on Saturday that an elderly man at Udhopur village had allegedly slit his throat at his home after offering Eid namaz. He was immediately taken to a local hospital and later referred to Gorakhpur, where he died during treatment. Station House Officer (Gauri Bazaar police station) Nanda Prasad said that during inquiry, a suicide note was recovered from the house, which his family confirmed was written by him. 'In the note, he clearly stated that no one should be held responsible for his death, as he was taking the extreme step of his own will. He wrote that humans and animals are the same and that he was sacrificing himself and offering himself to Allah,' the SHO said. Ish Mohammad is survived by his wife and three sons.
