Blues hoping to defend home ice once again as Jets look to fight their way into NHL's second round

The first five games of the Winnipeg-St. Louis series have all had the same result. The home team won.
The Blues need that trend to continue Friday — or else.
Game 6 of the Jets-Blues matchup awaits in St. Louis, with Winnipeg — the NHL's best team in the regular season — holding a 3-2 series lead. The Blues rolled to wins on their home ice in Games 3 and 4, taking those games by scores of 7-2 and 5-1 to extend
a run of invincibility
there that has lasted for more than two months.
'It's a tough building to play in,' Jets forward Vladislav Namestnikov said. 'But I know we can get the win there.'
If they do, they will be doing so without
star Mark Scheifele
, the team's second-leading scorer and leader in game-winning goals this season. Scheifele was hurt in Game 5 and wasn't flying with Winnipeg to St. Louis on Thursday for Game 6.
The teams had different opinions about when Scheifele got hurt, but the bottom line is the Jets will be missing a big part of their team for a potential closeout game.
'Certainly, not having him is going to be huge,' Jets coach Scott Arniel said Thursday. 'But at the end of the day, last night, our three centermen had to step up and play big minutes and did a great job. ... So proud of the group, how everybody stepped up. It's kind of what our team has done all year. Guys go down, other guys step in.'
Winnipeg was the most recent visiting team to win in St. Louis — but that was more than two months ago.
The Blues have put together the longest home winning streak in the NHL this season, a 14-game run that started on Feb. 23 and hasn't stopped. St. Louis has outscored opponents 69-25 in that span at home, winning by an average of a whopping 3.14 goals per game.
'We've played some good hockey at home for a couple months now,' St. Louis' Brayden Schenn said. 'We're comfortable there.'
That's a bit of an understatement. The Blues have simply looked like a different team in their own building; St. Louis has had stretches of three goals in five minutes, three goals in eight minutes and three goals in 15 minutes so far in this series on its own ice.
They looked nothing like that club in Game 5, a 5-3 Winnipeg win that probably wasn't as close as that score would make it seem. Blues coach Jim Montgomery didn't waste any time thinking about that game once the final horn sounded.
'We can analyze every part of it. They were better,' Montgomery said. 'So, we're on to the next one.'
It took St. Louis a long — long — time to get home on Thursday, after their travel plans were seriously delayed.
The Blues had plane issues trying to leave Winnipeg and, after a replacement jet was sent to Manitoba, they finally took off about eight hours behind schedule.
The Jets landed in St. Louis around 3 p.m. Central time on Thursday, actually a tiny bit ahead of schedule, while the Blues didn't get there until about 9 p.m.
Winnipeg Jets at St. Louis Blues
When/Where to Watch: Game 6, Friday. 8 p.m. (TNT/truTV/Max)
Series: Jets lead 3-2
Winnipeg hasn't closed out a series with a road win since 2018, and getting it done Friday will be difficult.
Forget St. Louis' 14-game home winning streak, which is impressive enough. The Blues simply don't give up scoring chances in their building; they have allowed two goals or less in 11 of those 14 wins, and that level of stinginess puts enormous pressure on the other team's netminder.
That said, Winnipeg goalie and MVP hopeful Connor Hellebuyck has reveled in big moments like this all season.
The newly announced Hart Trophy finalist — alongside Edmonton forward Leon Draisaitl and Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov — led the NHL with 47 wins, a 2.00 GAA, and a .925 save percentage this season, had eight shutouts, steered Winnipeg to its first Presidents' Trophy, won the William M. Jennings Trophy (fewest goals allowed) for the second straight year and seems like a lock for the Vezina Trophy (top goalie) for the second straight year and third time in six seasons.
If Hellebuyck does win the Hart as MVP, he'd be the fourth goalie in the league's expansion era to do it alongside Dominik Hasek, José Théodore and Carey Price. He was
pulled twice in St. Louis
and has a gaudy 3.96 goals-against average and .822 save percentage in this series — including all three wins.
'He's our best player,' Namestnikov said.

Breece Hall Gets Trade Promise from Jets Coach Aaron Glenn

Breece Hall Gets Trade Promise from Jets Coach Aaron Glenn originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets are - once again - trying to turn things around ... and part of that effort is all about a new head coach in Aaron Glenn. Advertisement Is it also about running back Breece Hall? Hall's situation, dating back even before this offseason, has been an unsteady one. The trade rumors in particular just won't go away ... Until, maybe, now. Hall is now speaking frankly about having heard all of the rumors himself, saying, "I was seeing it just like everybody else was seeing it.'' So how to make them go away? Hear the truth from the boss. Hall said Glenn called him to shut down the buzz. "That meant a lot," Hall said. "At first, I just kind of like, OK, we'll just see what happens. And then, AG called me and told me: 'Breece, you think I want to trade you?' And I was like, I don't know. He's like, 'Breece, I don't want to trade you. I want you to be here. You're going to be here. You're our running back.' Advertisement "And so that felt really good.'' Glenn, during his early time here, has been nothing but blunt. (As the departed Aaron Rodgers). So if he didn't want Hall as a part of the 2025 Jets - and maybe beyond? Hall, in his final contractual season, wouldn't be here. The crowded running backs room here is a fact. In addition to Hall, the Jets have Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis, Kene Nwangwu, and Donovan Edwards. But Hall is the one with the skins on the wall, especially as he lead the NFL in receptions by a running back in 2023. How about a new contract to prove the club's devotion to him? That's a different story; extensions are certainties for his fellow 2022 draftees Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner. ... but for Hall, maybe not so much. Advertisement Allen is a young and powerful back and is highly thought of. But later in the 2024 season, Davis put up yards per carry numbers that impressed. So the "by-committee'' idea is real. But so is Glenn's honesty. "For me to get to know him and everything, it's been cool,'' Hall said. "And to see how our practices are run, how competitive he likes it to be, and how he likes to put the ball down and just let us play. It's been fun." Jets vs. Steelers Has Sauce Tempted by Terrible Towel Trouble

Jets vs. Steelers Has Sauce Tempted by Terrible Towel Trouble originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets are set to face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 of 2025. It's a highly anticipated matchup, with Aaron Rodgers playing his first game against the Jets after his controversial fallout with head coach Aaron Glenn. On the other side, Jets quarterback Justin Fields will be facing off against his former squad that benched him after a 4-2 start. Advertisement Now, star Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner is stirring the pot a little bit. Gardner flirted with the idea of messing with the infamous Terrible Towel in Week 1. "I don't know. Pittsburgh, you get a little in the trenches in there," Gardner said when asked about possibly messing with the Terrible Towel. "I might have to tread lightly, but we play (in New York). We on home court. I don't know, I've got to think about it." The Steelers' Terrible Towel has a long, cursed history for opponents in the NFL. Before a playoff game against the Cleveland Browns in 1994, Steelers defensive tackle Brenton Buckner dropped one such towel during player introductions. Browns running back Earnest Byner wasted no time, stepping on the towel and yelling "We don't care about your towel. We're going to beat you this time." Spoiler alert: The Steelers mopped the floor with the Browns, winning 29-9. Advertisement Cincinnati Bengals' wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh wiped his feet on the towel after scoring a touchdown in a 2005 regular season game. The Steelers came back to defeat Cincinnati 31-17 in the playoffs, en route to a Super Bowl XL victory, igniting a five-year playoff drought for the Bengals. Before a 2008 matchup at Heinz Field, Ravens receiver Derrick Mason stomped on a Terrible Towel. The Ravens dropped all three of their matchups against the Steelers that year, including the 2008 AFC Championship game. In 2009, at a public sendoff in Phoenix before the Arizona Cardinals headed off for Super Bowl XLIII, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon pulled out a towel and called over Cardinals' mascot Big Red to the stage. Big Red used the towel to wipe his armpits, and Gordon blew his nose in the towel. The Steelers would go on to beat the Cardinals in the Super Bowl 27-23. Most recently, in 2023, Jacksonville Jaguars safety Andrew Winged picked off a pass and proceeded to grab Terrible Towels with his teammates, waiving them around and mocking Steelers fans. At that point in the season, the Jaguars looked like favorites to win the division. Instead, Jacksonville completely collapsed and missed the playoffs. The Jaguars are 7-19 since. Advertisement So for Gardner, who plays for the most cursed franchise in the NFL, maybe stay away from the towel. After a long Super Rugby season, a final that seemed inevitable

Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — After 77 matches in the regular season and five more in the playoffs, Super Rugby has thrown up the final that seemed obvious since the tournament began. The Hamilton-based Chiefs who finished the regular season in first place will face the second-placed Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday. The Crusaders gained top-seeding when the Chiefs lost to the Blues in the first playoff round and will host the final for a record eighth time. Through the ups and downs of the season, the Chiefs and Crusaders clearly established themselves as the two best teams in Super Rugby with matching 11-3 records in the normal season. The Crusaders beat the Queensland Reds and Auckland-based Blues in the playoffs while the Chiefs lost to the Blues and beat the ACT Brumbies after advancing to the semifinals as the top-ranked quarterfinal loser. After their 21-14 win over the Blues on Saturday, the Crusaders will defend a 31-0 record in home playoffs in the final. The Chiefs will be playing in the final for the third-straight year after losing to the Crusaders in 2023 and the Blues in 2024. The Crusaders will attempt to win the title for the 13th time in full Super Rugby competitions — they won twice in regional tournaments during the COVID pandemic. The Chiefs will attempt to win for the third time, the first since 2013. Penney's redemption Last year, in their first season under head coach Rob Penney, the Crusaders won only four matches in one of their worst-ever seasons. The Crusaders' management decided to keep Penney on and this year he has led them to the final. When asked how he would celebrate the semifinal win over the Blues, Penney replied 'very quietly. The job is not done." 'I'm excited to be where we're at and just rapt we've got another week. The organization has got such a great history and to be able to be a small part of the team getting to this part is wonderful.' The Crusaders showed all the grit that has been part of their winning culture when they held out the Blues through more than 40 phases close to their goal-line in the dying minutes of Friday's match. Backrower Christian Lio-Willie finally won the turnover that ended the match in the 85th minute. 'The last few minutes was just heart and soul,' Penney said. Defense coach Matt Todd 'has done great work with the D which has been building all year. 'The boys dug deep and showed how much it means to them and how much they care about this place. And they wanted to get another week which is just such a joy.' Chiefs extend Brumbies' playoff woes After a tight first half, the Chiefs won with some comfort thanks to flyhalf Damian McKenzie who kicked six penalties and two conversions for 22 points. After leading 19-17, the Chiefs scored 18 unanswered points to close out the match. 'It was an outstanding performance from the lads,' McKenzie said. 'The Brumbies came out of the blocks fast as we knew they would and I liked the way we were really composed and stuck to our game.' McKenzie kept the ball in front of the Chiefs' forwards while the Brumbies suffered a major blow when Wallabies flyhalf Noah Lolesio failed a head injury assessment in the 11th minute. Once again, the Brumbies fell just short of the title game after reaching the semifinals in each of the last three years. Australian teams are now 0-21 in playoff matches in New Zealand. 'There's frustration because it's the same story as last year,' Larkham said. 'We've had this story for more than two years in a row now. 'It's not a good feeling getting this far in the competition and not getting to the final.' ___ AP rugby: recommended
