Omani students win award for smart auto-maintenance robot
MUSCAT: In a breakthrough achievement reflecting the technical ingenuity of Omani youth, a team of students from the Sultanate of Oman has secured third place in a high-level engineering innovation competition at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), USA.
The students were honoured for developing an integrated smart system that automates vehicle maintenance. Their project, combining two innovative technologies — 'Lio', an automatic oil-changing machine, and 'AOFR', a robotic unit that replaces car oil filters — delivers full service in under ten minutes, without lifting the vehicle.
The invention is distinguished by its precision, efficiency, and hygiene. Fully automated and sensor-enabled, the system eliminates the need for human intervention, reduces the risk of oil spills, and enhances overall safety. A user-friendly touchscreen provides real-time feedback on temperature and operation, helping maintain clean and environmentally sound conditions.
The AOFR robot slides beneath the car and performs filter replacement with high accuracy, using a torque-controlled wrench, a micro-lift system, dual monitoring cameras, and remote-control functionality. It is also equipped with obstacle detection technology. Meanwhile, the Lio unit provides clean and efficient oil change services compatible with various engine types, all without the use of hydraulic lifts.
'We worked on this project for many months with the goal of creating a practical tool that simplifies maintenance and minimises human error,' said team member Fareed al Alawi. 'Winning this competition is just the beginning. Our ambition is to further develop and commercialise this technology.'
Project supervisor Dr Elissa Ledoux expressed her admiration for the team's achievement: 'The students demonstrated a deep understanding of applied engineering and modern technology. Their innovation offers a smart and effective solution to a real-world challenge.'
Dr Ken Currie, Dean of the College of Engineering at MTSU, also commended the team: 'This type of breakthrough reflects the spirit we cultivate in our students. The Omani team has delivered an outstanding example of turning engineering knowledge into practical application.'
The award highlights the growing prominence of Omani youth in global innovation forums. It reinforces their ability to compete internationally and make meaningful contributions to the fields of science, technology, and engineering — in line with Oman Vision 2040's commitment to human capital development and advanced research.

Omani firm eyes drone-based cargo deliveries before year-end
MUSCAT: In a breakthrough for aerial logistics via unmanned aircraft in the Sultanate, Esbaar – an Omani provider of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems – is gearing up to launch heavy-duty drone-based cargo services for key sectors across the country. According to a senior project official, Esbaar aims to roll out the service – a first for Oman – before the end of this year. Esbaar, one of the first Omani companies to launch drone-based inspection and survey services in 2017, has since been developing cargo delivery capabilities through newly engineered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed to carry payloads to specific destinations in the Sultanate, said Hamadi Ben Ftima, Cargo Drones Project Manager. 'Our service offers a modern solution to logistics challenges, as our drones can operate at any time, above traffic and terrain, including in remote or time-critical areas. This will enable our customers to expand their operations, reduce non-productive time, cut their carbon footprint, and achieve their business objectives,' he noted. Speaking to the Observer, Ben Ftima said the initiative centers on deploying a fleet of heavy-duty drones capable of handling cargo ranging from as little as 500 grams up to 700 kilograms. 'We are initially targeting an operational area encompassing Haima, Qarn Alam, Adam, Nizwa, and Muscat. However, to be fully prepared, we will need to establish centralized hubs from which the drones will collect payloads for delivery to customer sites. The locations of these hubs and the flight paths will depend on customer profiles and specific requirements – matters currently under discussion,' he explained. Esbaar is targeting potential clients in the oil and gas, renewable energy, mining, agriculture and fisheries, healthcare, and emergency response sectors. The company also plans to serve the offshore sector, including oil rigs and platforms, Ben Ftima added. Currently, Esbaar operates a fleet of around 30 drones used primarily for inspection, surveying, and 3D modeling services. The company employs both Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. BVLOS enables drones to operate beyond the pilot's direct visual range, allowing for extended coverage and efficient performance in tasks such as long-range pipeline inspections and remote infrastructure surveys. VLOS, by contrast, requires the pilot to maintain visual contact with the drone throughout its flight. In preparation for the cargo service launch, Esbaar has been conducting at least eight hours of continuous BVLOS flights to build in-house expertise. The company also anticipates significant job creation for Omanis, who will be trained to operate drones, manage logistics hubs, and provide supporting services. Asked about the timeline for the service launch, Ben Ftima said it depends on several factors: signing contracts with customers, finalizing flight plans and operational protocols, and securing approval from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The goal, he emphasized, is to launch Oman's first drone cargo delivery service before the end of the year.

Al Harthy awaits for the '24 Hours of Le Mans' race
Global motorsport's greatest and most challenging race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the famous Circuit de la Sarthe in France, is mere days away for Oman's Ahmad al Harthy who intends to mount a major bid for silverware with team-mates Valentino Rossi and Kelvin van der Linde. Marking the halfway stage of the FIA World Endurance Championship season, round four of the 2025 campaign, this year's visit to Le Mans — the race begins on Saturday, June 14 — will be Al Harthy's third attempt at the endurance racing classic where he is a past podium finisher. Memorably, of course, he made history on his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut back in 2023 when racing to a sensational second place result in the then GTE Am class — success which he happily dedicated to his Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. Now competing in LMGT3, the successor to GTE, the Omani's second season with Team WRT in the No.46 BMW M4 LMGT3 has been impacted by some misfortune but there has been celebration as well thanks to a fantastic second place — a mere 0.3 seconds shy of victory — at Imola in Italy in April. Climbing to sixth in the LMGT3 standings at that point, having had to settle for 11th place during the season-opening event at Lusail in Qatar, a podium bid last time out at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium ultimately became ninth due to a pit-lane speed limiter glitch which resulted in a luckless penalty. While there have been frustrations with some of the misfortune, the overall pace and performance across qualifying and race conditions from the Team WRT entry has been outstanding and Al Harthy himself has been extremely satisfied with the level of his own personal performance thus far. Supported as always by OQ Group, Sohar International, Omantel, Oman LNG, BMW Oman, Oman Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), and Experience Oman, Al Harthy is very much looking forward to welcoming plenty of key partners to the 93rd staging of the 24 Hours of Le Mans later this week.
