Alvarez delivers 10th-inning RBI double and Mets overcome Ohtani's heroics for 4-3 win over Dodgers
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Francisco Alvarez drove in his first run in four weeks with a double leading off the 10th inning, and the New York Mets overcame Shohei Ohtani's 23rd homer and tying sacrifice fly for a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night.
Francisco Lindor had a leadoff homer and a 10th-inning RBI single for the Mets, who opened this National League Championship Series rematch series with their eighth win in nine games.
Ohtani hit a 424-foot shot off Max Kranick in the seventh, getting his fifth homer in seven games to tie Seattle's Cal Raleigh for the major league lead with 23.
Tommy Edman singled and stole second to open the ninth before scoring on Ohtani's flyout to deep left. Mets closer Edwin Díaz (3-0), pitching for the third time in four days, was handed his first blown save of the season.
After Alvarez and Lindor delivered, José Castillo walked Freddie Freeman and gave up an RBI single to Andy Pages to open the 10th.
Castillo struck out Max Muncy and Freeman got to third on pinch-hitter Will Smith's flyout before José Buttó gloved Edman's sharp grounder back to the mound to secure his first save of the season.
Paul Blackburn threw five scoreless innings of three-hit ball and struck out Ohtani twice in his first major league appearance since last August, when the Mets right-hander went down with a back injury before hurting his knee in spring training.
Dustin May yielded six hits over six resourceful innings for LA.
Lindor crushed May's second pitch for his 14th homer. Six are leadoff homers, tying Ohtani for the major league lead.

'We do have a lot of fans coming in, wearing their gear, asking for it. We do our Jets pucks year-round, so we figured, why not switch it up and show our Canadian pride?' said chocolatier Alex Ruiz. Ruiz said during the Winnipeg Jets' playoff run, they had a lot of interest in their Jets' pucks for parties and events. 'We love our hockey, and we love our chocolates,' she said. The pucks are available in both milk and dark chocolate versions. Ruiz said if the Oilers become the first Canadian team to raise the Stanley Cup since 1993, some chocolates shaped like the trophy are likely to become available in her shop.

PWHL Vancouver signs former Frost defender Thompson as club's first player
VANCOUVER – Vancouver's new Professional Women's Hockey League team has signed its first player, nabbing defender Claire Thompson from the Minnesota Frost. The two-time Walter Cup champions left the 27-year-old defender exposed and Vancouver inked her to a one-year contract when the exclusive signing window opened to expansion teams on Wednesday. 'I'm incredibly excited to join PWHL Vancouver and be a part of this new chapter of women's ice hockey,' Thompson said in a release. 'The opportunity to help build something special from the ground up is truly meaningful. I can't wait to connect with the fans and represent this city.' Thompson, who hails from Toronto, had four goals and 14 assists in 30 games for Minnesota last season and is a finalist for the PWHL's defender of the year honour. She added another six helpers in eight playoff appearances as the Frost captured the league championship for a second straight year. Thompson has ample international experience, helping Canada to gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Detroit waived/injured cornerback Divaad Wilson on Wednesday to clear a roster spot. The Lions lost their starting center to retirement earlier this week.
