Three girls admit killing 75-year-old in attack filmed on mobile phone
Three teenage girls have admitted killing a 75-year-old man in a street attack filmed on a mobile phone.
Fredi Rivero was set upon in Islington, north London, on February 27 and died in hospital the next day.
The victim, a Bolivian national, was near a bus stop on Seven Sisters Road when the teenagers got off a bus and surrounded him.
The youths, aged 15, 16 and 17, pushed, shoved, kicked and punched him, with one of them filming the incident on her phone and grabbing his glasses.
As part of the police investigation, officers recovered CCTV footage of the assault in which the oldest girl was seen to punch the victim in the head causing him to fall backwards.
Police were called at 11.25pm to reports of the disturbance and found Mr Rivero unconscious on the pavement with a severe head injury and in cardiac arrest.
He was taken to the Royal London Hospital where he later died.
On Thursday, the girls, who cannot be identified because of their ages, appeared at the Old Bailey before Judge Judy Khan KC.
The girls, who appeared from custody by video link, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Judge Khan ordered reports and remanded the defendants into custody to be sentenced on September 5.
Previously, police have said Mr Rivero was a 'much-loved father' whose family were 'devastated by his death'.
Mr Rivero's daughter, ex-wife and cousins attended court for the hearing on Thursday.

Man charged over murder of baby boy
A man has been charged with murdering a 13-month-old boy, as well as serious sexual and child cruelty offences. Jamie Varley is accused of killing Preston Davey, who died in Blackpool in July 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service said. The 36-year-old also faces two counts of assault by penetration of a child, five counts of child cruelty, one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm and one count of sexual assault of a child. He is further accused of 10 counts of taking indecent photographs of a child, one count of distributing indecent photographs of a child, two counts of possessing indecent pseudo images of a child, and one count of possession of an extreme pornographic image. Police were called to Blackpool Victoria Hospital at 7.15pm on July 27 2023 after Preston was brought in unresponsive. The infant was pronounced dead a short time later. The Crown Prosecution Service said John McGowan-Fazakerley, 31, Varley's co-accused, is alleged to have allowed the death of a child, and faces two counts of child cruelty and one count of sexual assault of a child. All of the charges the men face relate to Preston, Lancashire Police said. Both men, of Grimsargh, are due to appear at Lancaster magistrates' court on Friday.

Belfast loyalist Winston Irvine's sentence referred to Court of Appeal
A sentence handed to leading Belfast loyalist Winston Irvine has been referred to the Court of Appeal. Irvine was sentenced to two-and-a-half years, with half to be served in jail, at Belfast Crown Court last month following an incident where firearms and ammunition were found in the boot of his car. The 49-year-old avoided a statutory five-year sentence on several of the charges he faced after Judge Gordon Kerr KC ruled that there were 'exceptional circumstances' in his case, namely Irvine's 'work for peace and his charity work in the community'. However, there was criticism by several political figures, including First Minister Michelle O'Neill, that the sentence had been too lenient. On Friday it was announced that Northern Ireland's Director of Public Prosecutions Stephen Herron was referring the sentence to the Court of Appeal. The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) confirmed the referral has been lodged with the Court of Appeal. 'While sentencing is a matter for the independent judiciary, the Director of Public Prosecutions does have the power to refer particular sentences to the Court of Appeal on the grounds that they may be unduly lenient,' a PPS spokesperson said. 'An unduly lenient sentence is one that falls outside the range of sentences that a judge, taking into consideration all relevant factors and having regard to sentencing guidance, could reasonably impose. The sentence must not just be lenient but unduly lenient. 'After careful consideration of the sentence handed down in the case of Winston Irvine, including with the benefit of advices from independent Senior Counsel, we have determined that there is a sufficient legal basis to refer the sentence to the Court of Appeal.' They said consideration was also given to the sentence handed down to Irvine's co-accused Adam Robinson Workman, 54, who was sentenced to five years imprisonment. But they said following careful consideration, it was determined that there was no legal basis on which to refer Workman's sentence to the Court of Appeal as potentially unduly lenient.

Schools plunged into lockdown after ‘man seen with knife' as parents warned ‘do not come' and kids shut inside
