Sunderland want to be remembered for more than Dan Ballard's header

Skipper Dan Neil does not want Dan Ballard's winner which took Sunderland to Wembley to be the best memory of a season which could yet end with a return to the Premier League.
Ballard's last-gasp extra-time header in the second leg of the Black Cats' Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-final showdown with Coventry sent the Stadium of Light into raptures and Regis Le Bris' men to headquarters, where Sheffield United stand between them and a return to the top flight on Saturday.

For the home fans who witnessed it, that moment will live long in the memory, but as important as it was, for Neil it was merely a stepping stone to a bigger prize.

He said: 'It feels a bit surreal we've been involved in one of those moments that will be talked about for a long time. It's an unbelievable moment, but one thing we've all said is we've got to get the job done.
'We don't want to just be remembered for Dan Ballard's header, we want to be remembered for going all the way, getting back to the Premier League.'
If Sunderland as a club have unfinished business this season, so too does Neil as an individual.

The 23-year-old midfielder was one of a series of Academy graduates to be given his chance as the Black Cats rebuilt following a slide which had taken them from the Premier League to League One, where they spent four seasons.
However, he did not make it on to the pitch from the bench the day they beat Wycombe in the play-off final in May 2022 to climb back into the Championship and he was denied a chance to right that wrong two seasons ago when Luton ended their hopes in the semi-finals.
Now Neil is hoping to exorcise all those ghosts by helping to end the Wearsiders' eight-year exile from England's top division.

He said: 'I was obviously delighted when we won promotion out of League One and to have been part of the squad and played a part over the year.

'I lost my place in the team towards the end of the season and not getting on the pitch at Wembley has been a bit at the back of my mind.
'Two years ago when we played Luton, I was in the team, chance to get to Wembley… that's another reason I was so buzzing when we got past Coventry.'

Why Sunderland need 'experience and understanding' to survive

We asked for your questions for BBC Sport pundit Nedum Onuoha on your Premier League asked what Nedum's former club Sunderland can do to strengthen for the challenges of the Premier League next season after securing is a tough question.I would say they need to find people with good Premier League experience that also understand what it takes to galvanise a group to take on a challenge that most of those guys have not experienced before - and can do it as significant underdogs on a week-to-week you bring somebody in who expects to be successful straight away then some of the tougher times might affect the mood. You need someone with experience who is realistic and can also be part of a team do not want to go into the Premier League and just figure it out as you go along. You want to have a plan and to build. It seems like the manager has got a lot of belief in them by finally getting back up there, plus some of the players already there could potentially do well in the top need to find players who will complement that, not ones who are going to be doing things for themselves if things start to go sour because, in reality and as it stands, people do not expect them to win a lot of are going to have to be fighting their way through on a week-to-week basis.I have heard links with Jordan Henderson coming back. I do not know if he will, but if somebody with that much Premier League experience would want to be part of a transition period for the club - and he is also in one himself - then that would be is part of what you need - somebody who will understand the area, understand the fanbase and understand the club. Not somebody who just sees a chance to go and play in the Premier you fail to find the right mix then it will be a real split in terms of those who have come up with the side and those who Sunderland do not get experience and understanding then they will be in a terrible position in a year's time - probably heading back to the Championship but this time without that cohesive feeling they had just a few weeks Onuoha was speaking to BBC Sport's Nat HaywardSunderland fans, this is your Premier League club page. Mike Maignan's 'stance on Chelsea move revealed' as Enzo Maresca targets £25m-rated Milan star as Robert Sanchez upgrade

Mike Maignan has clarified his stance on a potential move to Chelsea this summer, according to reports. Mail Sport understands Chelsea are currently trying to negotiate a £10million move for the French international, who has one year remaining on his contract, while AC Milan have valued their goalkeeper at £25m. Chelsea already have five goalkeepers in their squad but none have convinced Blues fans as they prepare for a return to the Champions League next season. Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders and Kepa Arrizabalaga are all currently contracted at Stamford Bridge, but they have not persuaded the Chelsea hierarchy against looking for another keeper this window. Indeed, the Blues are lining up a move for Maignan, who is now understood to be keen on playing at Stamford Bridge next season, as per L'Equipe. The shot-stopper has reportedly turned down multiple contract offers from Milan over the past few months, as he has no interest in extending his stay in Italy. It is believed that Chelsea would prefer to sign their man before the Club World Cup begins on June 15, with Maignan also open to this idea. Turning 30 years old next month, Maignan does not want to waste time, and is desperate to play Champions League football. Milan missed out on European qualification last season after sinking to a disappointing eighth-place finish - a huge decline from being Serie A runners-up in 2023-24. Mail Sport understands that a decision on Maignan's future is all down to whether Milan want to risk him leaving on a free transfer next summer or allow him to depart for a fee this year. The Frenchman joined Milan from Lille back in 2021 and has been a consistent performer for the Italian giants over the last four seasons. Despite the club having a poor 2024-25 campaign, Maignan still managed to keep 13 clean sheets. Since joining Milan, he has lifted the Serie A title in 2022 and the Italian Super Cup in 2024. In 163 appearances for the Italian heavyweights, Maignan has kept 59 clean sheets.
