Cross-border run: New Brunswick athletes training for international marathon

CBC20-02-2025

It's not every day that someone can say they've run a marathon that crosses into another country.
But Jenna Green and some of the members of her running club will get those bragging rights this summer.
"From what I can tell, the route will be beautiful," Green said.
The Bay of Fundy International Marathon, which is returning on June 22 after a COVID-19 hiatus, connects Lubec, Maine and Campobello Island, in southwestern New Brunswick.
The race starts at the most easterly point of the United States, the West Quoddy Lighthouse, and crosses the border by way of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Bridge.
Despite current political tensions between Canada and the U.S., Green said she's optimistic the marathon will go smoothly.
"Hopefully ... our communities can come together."
This will be her first time at this particular event, but running has always been a part of her life.
When she moved to Moncton in 2020, she felt she was out of her element.
She had run track and was part of running clubs in Montreal during university, so not finding that team environment when she moved to Moncton was a shock.
"I was really seeking that community aspect, so I decided to start a run club in my neighbourhood," Green said.
It originally included mainly moms and dads in the area, all pushing strollers together, and there were about five to eight members at the time.
But last January, they moved the club's location to Laundromat Espresso Bar on St. George Street, near the downtown area, and changed the name of the club to La Run Gang.
"Pretty much as soon as we changed the name and we changed the location, we started seeing a lot more members come through the doors."
Every Tuesday in the summer around 60 people come out, said Green, but the winter crowd is closer to 30 to 50.
The Tuesday night run is more of a social event, said Green, while on Sundays, the group meets at La Factrie on Albert Street, where they do a longer run, usually up to 20 kilometres.
The group includes a wide variety of runners, according to Dominique Comtois, one of the leaders of La Run Gang.
"I joke often, being like ... you have runners that are competitive, they really enjoy trying to knock some time off their race," he said.
"And so they run [to] get a good time, Comtois said, while "I run to have a good time."
The La Run Gang community has been his way of getting to know more people while staying active in the process.
He said running with the group is for anyone, even those with a minimal level of fitness.
"For me, that's a big win, especially with the last couple years, people need, maybe more, that sense of community," said Comtois.
Florent Vallade, another member of the running club, can attest to that. He moved to Moncton from France two years ago and joined the group a little over six months ago.
"I always used to run alone," said Vallade.
"And since I came [from] France, not knowing anyone, I started the running club, and then I was there every Tuesday since then.
"My best day of the week."

Schedules for the route won't appear in searches until the launch date. Tickets start at $28 and include free Wi-Fi, guaranteed seating and luggage. Stops along the route include: FlixBus launched a London-Toronto route in 2021 after Greyhound shut down operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The European-owned company, which bills itself as 'North America's fastest-growing intercity bus service,' expanded again in 2023 with a London-Detroit line. That route, an extension of the Toronto-Detroit service, includes stops in Scarborough, Hamilton, Brantford, Chatham-Kent and Windsor. Other companies have entered the market to meet demand. In 2021, St. Thomas-based BadderBus partnered with Megabus, a division of Coach Canada, to offer London-Toronto service. That same year, Mississauga-based Onex Bus also launched a Toronto route. bbaleeiro@

Is the Haunted Walk Of Ottawa actually scary?

The number of bodies buried beneath Ottawa's downtown core may surprise you. Article content It definitely surprised me when I signed up for a Haunted Walk of Ottawa tour on a recent evening. It was one of those perfect early-summer evenings when our city is at its best, with the setting sun casting a golden glow on the historic limestone buildings surrounding the National War Memorial. Article content Article content Our group of seven on this particular walk consisted of a young couple from Ukraine and a family of three from South Africa, the dad being in town on business, plus me and an adventurous friend. Our guide was Caroline, a storyteller with a flair for the dramatic who wore the Haunted Walk's trademark long, black cloak and carried a battery-powered lantern. Article content Article content The tours take place almost every evening. Because this one was an early-week booking, between Monday and Wednesday, each of us saved $5 on the usual cost of $29.99 per person. Even if you don't have a ghost-busting bone in your body, it's well worth it, not only for the historical content, but also for a fresh perspective on a part of the city we residents often take for granted. Article content We started at the old Central Post Office at the east end of Sparks Street and learned that the ground underneath the street was once a cemetery. Most of the remains were relocated when the area was redeveloped, but it's almost certain that some of the bodies are still there, all but forgotten except, perhaps, on dark and stormy full-moon nights. Article content Article content Leaving the restless souls of Sparks Street behind, the tour continued across the street. Our next stop was the grand memorial to Canada's war efforts and another gravesite, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We paused for a moment to pay our respects to the thousands of Canadians killed during wartime. Article content Article content As we strolled between sites, several other groups of Haunted Walkers filed back to the starting point, most of them students on school trips trailing behind their own black-cloaked tour guide. Article content Glen Shackleton, founder and CEO of the Ottawa-based business, said the school trips were helping to fill the calendar until the summer tourists started to make plans. Tourism in Ottawa has been on a comeback since the COVID-19 shutdown five years ago. Article content 'It's been a slow start for tourism in general in Ottawa this year,' Shackleton said, 'but, honestly, I think that has more to do with the weather than anything. It's been pretty unusual, the inhospitable weather, but we're optimistic for a very good summer and fall.'
