Black holes vibe together in a cosmic love story for Valentine's Day written in the stars

"Roses are red. Violets are blue. Your event horizon means I can't see you!" As that ugly verse shows, black holes aren't exactly conducive to romantic imagery on Valentine's Day. However, a new simulation revealed just in time for Feb. 14 shows how dancing black holes can "vibe" with one another, forming a cosmic love story that is literally written in the stars.
More precisely, the team behind the simulation discovered that binary black hole pairs formed in dense star clusters first align their spins before coming together and merging.The discovery could explain mysterious signatures seen in gravitational wave signals detected by the Laser Interferometer, Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), and its co-detector Virgo.
This research runs contrary to previous theories that suggested before they meet and merge, black holes each have their own spins that are random and chaotic.
"This discovery challenges the common belief that black holes formed in star clusters always have randomly distributed spins," team leader and Northwestern University researcher Fulya Kıroğl said in a statement.
This team, led by Northwestern University researcher Fulya Kıroğlu, found that as black holes are drawn together across a cosmic dance floor, they encounter massive stars.
The immense gravity of the black holes generates tidal forces squashing and stretching these stars in a process called "spaghettification." The black holes then slurp down these noodles of stellar pasta in a scene that may summon images of the famous spaghetti-eating scene in "Lady and the Tramp."But this is more than just a romantic cosmic meal. The mass gathered by the black holes increases their gravitational influence. This realigns the spin of the black holes, ringing them into sync.
"When a massive star is torn apart by a binary black hole, it creates two separate streams of debris, each spiraling around one of the black holes," Kıroğl said. "Initially, the direction of these spinning debris clouds is random. However, as the black holes get closer, powerful tidal forces begin to realign these clouds, gradually influencing the spin direction of the black holes themselves."If this wasn't already faux-romantic enough, the above simulation shows that as the black holes draw together, streams of material from their stellar meals wrap around them, forming an iconic Valentine's Day heart.

"Over time, this process leads to black hole mergers with a slight but consistent alignment of their spins — something that had been seen in gravitational wave signals from merging binary black holes detected by LIGO/Virgo but had not been fully understood until now," Kıroğl continued.
The team's research has been accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

It is one of the largest in our vicinity and was the ideal first target for the Event Horizon Telescope. Scientists have taken a fresh look at the supermassive black hole using those iconic Event Horizon Telescope images and have now figured out just how fast this monster is spinning and how much material it's devouring. The results are pretty mind-blowing. This black hole, which weighs in at 6.5 billion times the mass of our Sun, is spinning at roughly 80% of the theoretical maximum speed possible in the universe. To put that in perspective, the inner edge of its accretion disk is whipping around at about 14% the speed of light - that's around 42 million meters per second. The team figured this out by studying the "bright spot" in the original black hole images. That asymmetric glow isn't just there for show - it's caused by something called relativistic Doppler beaming. The material on one side of the disk is moving toward us so fast that it appears much brighter than the material moving away from us. By measuring this brightness difference, the scientists could calculate the rotation speed. But here's where it gets really interesting. The researchers also looked at the magnetic field patterns around the black hole, which act like a roadmap for how material spirals inward. They discovered that matter is falling into the black hole at about 70 million meters per second - roughly 23% the speed of light. Using these measurements, they estimated that M87's black hole is consuming somewhere between 0.00004 to 0.4 solar masses worth of material every year. That might sound like a lot, but it's actually pretty modest for such a massive black hole - it's operating well below what scientists call the "Eddington limit," meaning it's in a relatively quiet phase. Protect LIGO's science and local impact from Trump's budget cuts
The Trump administration wants to slash funding for America's two Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatories (LIGOs) as part of broader cuts to the National Science Foundation. That would be a devastating blow to the nation's global leadership in scientific research. When Congress writes its fiscal 2026 budget, it should ignore the president's anti-science request. One of the LIGO sites is on the Hanford nuclear site. The other is in Louisiana. The White House proposes cutting 40% of their funding – $48 million to $29 million. And it also dictates how that cut should be made. It wants one of the two sites shut down. Given that Washington is a blue state that is participating in multiple lawsuits against the Trump administration and Louisiana is a red state that voted for the president, the odds of LIGO Hanford surviving seem low. Either way, scientists' ability to explore the universe by detecting gravitational waves would suffer significantly. Shutting one site down would compromise scientists' ability to verify detections of cosmic events and weed out false readings originating from local disturbances. It also would prevent the two sites from triangulating where an event occurred in the sky, allowing telescopes that rely on light for observations to also find and research them. The two LIGOs work in tandem. In 2015, the Hanford observatory and its sibling in Louisiana detected gravitational waves for the first time when they measured the ripple in space-time caused by two black holes merging 1.4 billion light-years away. The findings provided fresh confirmation of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity and earned researchers a Nobel Prize in physics. Since then, LIGO has detected hundreds of events, including black holes merging and neutron stars colliding. The Hanford site continues to refine its tools and push science forward. An upgrade a couple of years ago installed quantum squeezing technology that allows scientists to detect 60% more events and probe a larger volume of space. If funded, the observatories will continue to help humanity answer profound questions about the universe. Projects like LIGO are expensive. The National Science Foundation has spent more than $1 billion on detecting gravitational waves over four decades. At the start, skeptics deemed it risky, but it has provided tremendous return on investment. It epitomizes the sort of Big Science research that few institutions other than governments can afford. Think Europe's Large Hadron Collider, the Manhattan Project and the international Human Genome Project. Undercutting LIGO as it reaches its full potential and produces its most impressive results just to save a few million dollars would be a colossal mistake. As one commenter on the Tri-City Herald's website put it, 'It would be like inventing the microscope, seeing a cell for the first time, and then discarding it.' The best is yet to come. Even if a future administration were to restore funding, rehiring skilled researchers would be a monumental hurdle. A temporary shutdown will delay scientific progress and result in America losing ground to international researchers. LIGO has a local impact, too, and not just that it is visible from outer space. Its presence helps the Tri-Cities and the Hanford nuclear site evolve their scientific narrative from Cold War-era nuclear development to 21st-century astrophysics. It is a symbol of progress, diversification and positive global contribution that is invaluable for regional identity and attracting future talent and investment. LIGO staff go the extra mile by working with local STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students. They speak in classrooms about science careers and explain the complex workings of the observatory in a way that young people can understand. An $8 million LIGO Exploration Center, which opened in 2022 and was funded by Washington state, further enhances that public-facing mission. Such direct engagement cultivates future STEM talent and inspires the next generation of scientists and engineers. The proposed cuts to LIGO would lead to an irreversible loss of U.S. leadership in gravitational wave astronomy and an immense loss to the Tri-Cities. The Trump administration must reconsider. If it does not, Washington's congressional delegation must convince their colleagues to preserve this cornerstone of American scientific preeminence.

I've Been A Big Hater Of Disney's Live Action Remakes, But After Snow White, I Feel Like There's An Easy Way To Fix It

I'm the kind of girl who grew up watching Disney as if it were the air I needed to breathe. Switching on Disney Channel was like switching on my own personal oxygen tank. I'm pretty sure my parents, at some point, knew all the theme songs by heart of every single show, or all the Disney soundtracks as well, and not willingly. But when these Disney live-action remakes started to happen, I had a feeling that they were either going to go terribly wrong or they would do really well. And…so far it's been a pretty big mixed bag where I'd say about 60% of the time you get something that's not too great. And I've regularly talked about this pretty consistently on this website. However, I actually have something I need to say about this change Disney is making—one that I think a lot of people will agree with. If they were to continue, there's an easy way to fix these Disney live-action movies, so let's get into it. So, before I give you my reasoning, my truth must speak first – I've been a hater of these live-action movies in the past. In fact, I literally just wrote an article about how I'm sick of them, and while I think Lilo and Stitch might be the outlier, most don't entertain me anymore. When the first movies began to release years ago, there was a lot to love, mainly because they were new and exciting. Oh, Disney is releasing its best animated movies, but they're going to be live-action now with pretty stars and beautiful visuals and everything? That sounds exciting! But at the end of the day, most ended up becoming half-baked remakes that tried to be something new when the blueprint is right there. I used to love them. Truly, I did. But over time, they just diminished in quality to the point where we ended up getting Snow White…and while I do believe Rachel Zegler is still the perfect Snow White because she has the voice of an angel, the rest of the movie was just…not that great. However, I've been thinking a lot about this, and I know what to do with these live-action films if Disney were to keep making them. The solution is simple, really. Literally. It's. That. Easy. Just go to the source material. Do you want to know why so many of the original live-action films did so well? They didn't try to reinvent the wheel. They stuck to the material that most everyone and their mother knew because it's Disney. These are the stories that we have grown up with, the tales that our parents told us to fall asleep to, and then took us to the theatre to see. Why would we want to see them changed? Honestly, I'm not even talking entirely about the Disney versions. I'm talking about the actual story that the movies are based on. I feel that with so many of these adaptations, they've been trying to work in different aspects of pop culture and modern-day political stances, and so much more, that it's lost the magic that these tales once had. Are there certain things that need to be changed? Of course. These are older stories, and some things haven't aged well. But most are still fine. The source material is fantastic and well-loved for a reason. Why change it? This is the biggest thing, though—if you're going to recreate the movie, recreate what you know the fans already love. Recreate the scenery, the dresses, and the themes that we all understand because the last thing we want is some new message shoved down our throats that wasn't already there in the first place. Sure, this begs the question of why these live-action films even need to be made, but honestly, I don't find it terribly unethical to remake the movie. I actually think it's pretty par for the course because animation is such a fantastic medium of film that it makes sense people would want to create a live-action version of certain films to test the powers of technology and all that. And if Disney is going to move in that direction, then why not stick with the same story that we all know? If you want to change a few aspects, that's fine, which is precisely what Cinderella did. The 2015 film from Disney isn't an exact adaptation of the original film – it's actually considered another adaptation of the original story. Still, it hits the same story beats as the animated film. There are a few changes that really make the movie stand out, from how Cinderella and the prince first meet to what happens after the ball. These changes add depth and emotion to the story without taking away its key themes, which is how I feel many other Disney live-action remakes have done. Personally, I think Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid are the only other two live-action remakes that have relatively kept the same theme and plot, and maybe that's because they're so beloved. But it feels like the other ones have tried to change too much – or, in The Lion King's case, not that much at all, and instead feed us the most lifeless 'live-action' CGI animals in history. Yeah, that film should have just stayed animated. I think my last major point would be that while it's okay to make slight changes to the story in order to fit more into it, you don't need to try so hard to make additions at all. They should really only be there if the story makes sense to have them there. For example, I actually like 'Evermore' from Beauty and the Beast. I think it adds a lot more depth to Beast's character and adds more humanity to the story overall. But notice how the movie itself is the same kind of story as the film. They didn't try to push new themes down your throat or anything else. It was just Beauty and the Beast with the addition of a new song. That is how it's supposed to be, and what other live-action Disney remakes need to take from this. I don't know, maybe I'm sticking up for Disney a little hard, but I feel like there is a secret pathway to success with these films. I think it really is just as easy as listening to the fans and creating movies that have the stories we all know and love. Every person nowadays is trying to sell something to you, whether it's physical, emotional, or whatever. Too many people have too much access to preaching their ideas over and over, and the last thing we want is to see that in a movie that we all know, something the original never had. If we're going to be watching a film that we all know and love, make the movie that we know and love. If you want to make changes, fine, make a few subtle changes. But if you're going to change the entire storyline, don't call it an adaptation of the movie, because that is where you will lose fans, time and time again. Okay, rant over. I think I need to rewatch some old Disney movies to calm down. It's time for a marathon.
