Ex-police officers found not guilty of murder in Tyre Nichols beating death
Ex-police officers found not guilty of murder in Tyre Nichols beating death Three ex-Memphis police officers faced state charges, including second-degree murder and aggravated assault, in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols.
An out-of-town-jury in the Tyre Nichols state case returned a not guilty verdict on all counts for three of the former Memphis police officers charged in his death.
Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith, Jr. were charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression. The out-of-town jury was mostly-white from Hamilton County.
Five officers pepper-sprayed, punched and kicked Nichols, a 29-year-old father, skateboarder and FedEx worker, during a 2023 traffic stop. Release of video of the beating sparked protests and vigils across the nation and calls for change within the Memphis Police Department.
During the trial, attorneys for Bean, Haley and Smith said Nichols resisted arrest and was dangerous to the officers. They noted drugs and stolen credit cards were found in Nichols' car and said he could have had superhuman strength due to drug use. Prosecutors said the officers beat Nichols to death, pointing to his severe injuries, and tried to cover it up afterward.
What happened to Tyre Nichols?
Nichols was pulled over in the evening hours of Jan. 7, 2023. Haley and another officer initially pulled him over and pulled him from his car.
A struggle ensued, with pepper spray being used and a Taser being fired at Nichols as he ran from officers. It is unclear if the Taser made contact with him.
Another set of officers eventually caught up to Nichols, who was running toward his mother's house. He was less than 100 yards away when he was tackled.
When more officers got to the scene, while officers held Nichols' arms and hit him with a barrage of kicks, punches, baton strikes and pepper spray.
The assault lasted minutes and was captured on body cameras and a SkyCop camera. When Nichols goes limp, he is handcuffed and leaned against an unmarked squad car. More than 20 minutes pass before he is put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.
Officers still facing federal prison time
All three former officers were convicted in federal court and face time in federal prison. Sentencing for the federal case was postponed until the state case reached an end. Bean and Smith were acquitted of civil rights violations but found guilty of witness tampering and face up to 20 years in federal prison.
Haley was found guilty on all counts — using excessive force, being deliberately indifferent to Nichols' medical needs, witness tampering and conspiracy to witness tamper — but that jury found that when Haley violated Nichols' civil rights it resulted in injury, not death. Haley could serve a life sentence in federal prison.
There is no parole in the federal system.
Two other former officers, Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills, Jr., took a plea deal and pleaded guilty in the federal case to using excessive force and conspiracy to witness tamper. Mills' plea agreement extended to the state case and he will serve both his federal and state sentences at the same time.
Martin and Mills testified during the federal trial. Mills testified during the state trial.

Police still investigating death of Brett Gardner's 14-year-old son as potential homicide
Costa Rican authorities are still seeking answers in the tragic death of Miller Gardner. The 14-year-old son of ex-Yankees star Brett Gardner died at Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort on March 21, with investigators continuing to determine if the cause will be homicide. 'The purpose of the investigation is precisely to determine whether or not we are dealing with a possible homicide,' a spokeswoman for the Prosecutor's Office of Costa Rica told ESPN on Thursday. 'For this reason, it is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed.' 3 Miller Gardner, 14, was vacationing with his family in Costa Rica when he died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Gardner died of carbon monoxide inhalation according to a toxicology report in early April, which noted 'high levels' of the noxious gas in his hotel room, which was adjacent to a mechanical room. The resort denied the validity of a report by the Judicial Investigation Agency of Costa Rica that revealed high levels of carbon monoxide in the Gardner family's hotel room, saying that the high levels were confined to the machine room. Authorities are seemingly still in the first stage of their criminal procedure of collecting and analyzing evidence, with a potential second stage involving formal charges before a trial. Gardner was initially theorized to have died from asphyxiation in his sleep after choking on vomit after food poisoning, but was later revealed to have no windpipe blockage. 3 Miller Gardner (second from right) was the son of Yankee great Brett Gardner (right). The Gardner family has not commented on Miller's death since publishing an obituary for the teen on March 31. 'The void Miller's passing leaves in the hearts of his family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches and others will be felt for years,' the family wrote. 'Miller's time here with [his friends and family] was brief, but his spirit will carry on forever through those who were impacted by the way he lived. Miller was so blessed with experiences and friendships in his 14 years, and would want other children to have the opportunity to create their own wonderful memories.' 3 Yankees' Brett Gardner during a 2021 game against the Blue Jays. for the NY POST Brett Gardner, 41, played the final of his 14 MLB seasons with the Yankees in 2021. He won the 2009 World Series with the team, collecting an All-Star appearance and a Gold Glove throughout his career, all spent in The Bronx.

Armed man who attacked officers outside police station jailed for life
A man armed with Molotov cocktails and a hatchet who attacked officers outside a South Wales police station has been jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 22 years in prison. Alexander Dighton, 28, knocked one officer unconscious and stabbed another in the leg when he launched an attack on Talbot Green Police Station in Rhondda Cynon Taf on January 31. In a police interview after the attack, Dighton, of Pontyclun, said he did not consider the scope of damage, 'merely that blood had to be spilt'. He previously admitted 10 charges relating to the incident, including attempting to murder Detective Constable Jack Cotton and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent to Sergeant Richard Coleman. Dighton also admitted assaulting Pc Joshua Emlyn and threatening Pc Stephanie Fleming with an adapted wooden pole. Judge Mark Lucraft KC sentenced Dighton, who had been referred to the anti-terrorism programme Prevent in January 2024, to life imprisonment and ordered him to serve a minimum of 22 years. The judge told the defendant, who represented himself in court, that the offences had 'a terrorist connection'. He said: 'It is clear that you continue to hold entrenched views. 'Other than the early guilty pleas, there is little else to be said to your credit.' The judge said the police officers that encountered Dighton were experienced. He added: 'Whilst they accept potential violence and difficult confrontations are part of the role of being a police officer, they were all deeply shocked by the nature and ferocity of your attack.' Prosecuting, Nicholas Hearn described how Dighton's sister had reported him to Prevent due to concerns he held 'racist and anti-Muslim views' and was likely to be involved with incel groups. The incel movement is made up of people who find themselves unsuccessful in relationships, often harbouring extreme and misogynistic views. On the night of the attack, Dighton arrived at the police station shortly before 7pm, where he lit a petrol bomb and threw it at a police van. When that failed to ignite, he attempted to start a fire by pouring lighter fluid over the van before smashing the windows of two vehicles using a pole. When confronted by officers, Dighton said 'I'm fed up, I'm done', before launching his attack. Attempts to restrain him using a Taser were unsuccessful because of the body armour he was wearing. He swung a pole at one officer, punched one in the head and stabbed another in the thigh, narrowly missing his femoral artery. Two of the three injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment. Speaking after the case, Frank Ferguson of the Crown Prosecution Service said Dighton wanted to attack the Government and the state. 'We were able to show that Dighton's attack was not only pre-meditated and meticulously planned, but that his motivations were connected to terrorism,' he said. 'While it is not a criminal offence to hold extreme or offensive views, it is one to carry out attempted murder and attack police officers because of them.' Chief Superintendent Stephen Jones, of South Wales Police, paid tribute to the 'bravery and professionalism' of the officers at the scene. 'Each officer is not just a public servant but also a husband, wife, or parent, and their families are undoubtedly deeply affected by incidents such as these that officers face daily,' he said. 'I want to also recognise the detectives' unwavering commitment throughout the investigation which is also commendable.'

Video of Antonio Brown's altercation resurfaces after attempted murder charge
Several videos from the night during which ex-NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown allegedly fired a gun in Miami following a boxing match and brawled with several individuals, leading to an arrest warrant being issued for attempted murder with a firearm, have started to circulate again on social media. Brown, 36, claimed at the time he had been jumped in an attempt to steal his jewelry following a Brand Risk boxing event hosted by streamer Adin Ross. Two videos posted in a compilation by NFL aggregator on X @NFL_DovKleiman showed the former Steelers star brawling with several individuals outside a building, with Brown falling to the ground during the ruckus. That video collection also featured a shirtless Brown being escorted by an officer with his hands behind his back — seemingly wearing handcuffs — toward a cop car. 9 An arrest warrant has been issued for Brown. MEGA A third clip from that video featured Ross talking to Brown after the incidents, with Brown stating 'nothing happened' when asked about what transpired and claimed that he 'blacked out.' Brown clarified on May 17 that he had not been arrested, and TMZ reported he was let free 20 minutes later. 9 Brown before kicking a man during the ruckus. @NFL_DovKleiman/X 'I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me. MEGA The City of Miami police department said in a May 17 release that it received a ShotSpotter Alert around 3 a.m. on May 17, but no arrests had been made, nor had anyone been injured. MEGA Those in the parking lot informed police that Brown had fired the shots, but the warrant also notes that Brown did not have a weapon on him when officers searched him. The warrant states investigators discovered two spent shell casings plus an empty gun holster, per the report. Officers later received videos allegedly showing Brown taking a gun from a security officer and running toward the man he had hit, according to The Washington Post. AP The man told police on May 21 that Brown 'began to run toward him with a firearm' and shot him twice, potentially hitting him in his neck area. Brown did not respond to The Post's attempt to reach him Thursday night via the email listed on his social media account. The mercurial receiver starred in the NFL from 2010-21, mostly playing for the Steelers before appearing in one game for the Patriots and finishing his career by playing two seasons for the Buccaneers. He has since become a controversial figure for his X posts.
