Major hydro power plant expansion put on hold

Yahoo07-05-2025

The operator of an underground power station at Scotland's "Hollow Mountain" has put on hold its plans for a major expansion of the site.
Renewables developer Drax had proposed building a new hydro-electric facility next to its existing complex inside Ben Cruachan, near Dalmally in Argyll.
But it said the costs of the project had risen and it would not be bidding for UK government support at this time.
The company said the expansion could potentially go-ahead in the future, "subject to an appropriate balance of risk and return".
The existing underground power station was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965.
At the time, it was the first large-scale reversible turbine storage energy project of its kind in the world.
It is housed within a huge cavern dug out inside Ben Cruachan, which is nicknamed Hollow Mountain because of the project.
Drax had proposed investing £500m in the construction project over seven years.
Last year, it completed initial design and engineering work for a 600MW expansion of Cruachan.
The company said: "Drax believes that the Cruachan II project is well aligned with the long-term system need for flexible generation and energy storage and, given its location, is well placed to support system constraints between Scotland and England."
It added: "Drax remains committed to disciplined capital expenditure which seeks to balance the risk and return of individual projects against other uses of capital, to maximise value."
Scenes for Star Wars series Andor were filmed at Cruachan.
The makers of the show said the underground power station - and its 316m (1,037ft), 46m (15ft) long dam - had the look it had been aspiring to capture for an episode called The Eye.
P roduction designer Luke Hull told BBC Scotland News in 2022: "If you look at the dam, it looks like Darth Vader's mask."

Mark Hamill addresses rumors he ‘quit' the ‘Star Wars' franchise, reveals his future plans

May the force be with you. Mark Hamill is finally setting the record straight regarding recent rumors he 'quit' the 'Star Wars' franchise. The 73-year-old actor, who portrayed Luke Skywalker in six of the popular sci-fi films, opened up about his future in a galaxy far, far away during an episode of NBC News' 'Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist' set to air on June 15. Today 8 Hamill clarified that he did not quit the 'Star Wars' franchise. Today 'Well, let me say: they haven't asked me,' Hamill told Geist, clarifying that he did not quit the iconic franchise. 'It's not like they said, 'Please come back.'' Advertisement 'I don't want to make a big PR pronouncement like 'This is my decision,'' he added. 'I'm just saying that it really felt like a conclusion. My character was given complete closure. I died, ironically by overdosing on the Force, I might point out.' 'The Rise of Skywalker' appeared to officially end the character arc that began when Hamill first portrayed Luke Skywalker in George Lucas' first film in the franchise 42 years earlier in 1977. 'Once the Skywalker trilogy was over, it was a whole new era for them,' Hamill explained to Geist. 'George gave them this amazing canvas, the entire galaxy. They can do Westerns, mysteries, comedies, whodunits, anything within that realm of 'Star Wars.'' 8 Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca in 1980's 'Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.' ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection Advertisement 8 Hamill as Luke Skywalker in 1983's 'Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.' ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection 'And they're doing so well,' he continued. 'I just think it's time. I had my time. I'm really appreciative, but I'm really looking to the future for all these new projects.' The rumors that Hamill quit the 'Star Wars' franchise first started swirling last month when the actor also told that he 'had his time' with the sci-fi film series and that 'they should focus on the future.' 'I am so grateful to George for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called 'Star Wars' the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,' he told the site on May 31. 'We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that.' 8 Hamill explained that while he has not quit the 'Star Wars' franchise, he believes his character's arc has come to a natural conclusion. Today 8 'I just think it's time. I had my time,' Hamill said. 'I'm really appreciative, but I'm really looking to the future for all these new projects.' Whether Hamill returns or not, Disney has several more 'Star Wars' projects planned for the future – including a standalone film starring Ryan Gosling titled 'Star Wars: Starfighter.' Advertisement 'This is the perfect place to start this journey for us, because it's such an incredible reminder of why we're going to make this movie and who we're going to make this movie for,' Gosling, 44, said when the movie was first announced in April. 'This is a standalone. It's not a prequel, not a sequel. It's a new adventure,' he added. 'It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet.'

Cillian Murphy Is Amazing In 28 Days Later, But I Was Shook By The A-Listers Who Originally Vied For The Role

I'm still amazed that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have reassembled to deliver a new tale of terror to the 2025 movie schedule in 28 Years Later. The occasion has left me also thinking about 28 Days Later a lot, a film that would eventually become known as Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy's star-making performance. But while the Oppenheimer lead has always been pitch perfect in the role of Jim, there's a long existing list of names that have been rumored to be up for the part back in the day. And when I say names, I truly mean 'names,' like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling and frequent Boyle collaborator Ewan McGregor. When the opportunity to watch the first 28 minutes of 28 Years Later was paired with an in-person interview with its intrepid director, I had to try and weed out fact from fiction, which saw all three names debunked in the process. However, that's when Danny Boyle gave CinemaBlend two names I never expected to be in the mix: I'll tell you who did audition for Jim. … Tom Hardy and Orlando Bloom, because they'd all finished either drama school or Black Hawk Down. … We didn't have very much money, we thought 'We'll never be able to afford a bigger actor.' And we wanted newbies who just didn't know which way it would break with them. So the trio of Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling and Ewan McGregor were never going to even make the list for 28 Days Later's casting. With that being said, I'm very surprised that Tom Hardy and Orlando Bloom hadn't been reported more often - especially at that point in their careers. Although coincidentally enough, McGregor was in Black Hawk Down himself, as well as entrenched in the Star Wars prequel trilogy at the time. Likewise, by the time Danny Boyle's film was making the rounds in its initial 2002 release in the UK, Hardy and Bloom were going head to head at the box office thanks to their respective roles in Star Trek: Nemesis and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Honestly, either man would have been a distraction to the tense, harrowing journey 28 Days Later took, as audiences would know they'd survive the ride. The whole point of the third act is that by time Jim's on his rampage through Major West's estate, you're supposed to wonder if he's an Infected at that point. While we now know that wasn't the case, and with Cillian Murphy set to return for 28 Years Later's sequel The Bone Temple, that point tends to get a bit lost. However, Danny Boyle's perspective seemed to see him pick between two finalists, with the Christopher Nolan vet winning out in the end. At least, that's what it sounded like when the 28 Years Later mastermind shared this with CinemaBlend: And I remember seeing [them], and we saw Cillian, and I remember thinking, 'Whoa, he'll have an amazing career.' I remember thinking that. I was right. I remember thinking that about Orlando Bloom, I thought 'He'll do all right. ' The rest, as they say, is history. 2003's US release lit a fuse that saw both Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris both launch into higher profile roles, and Danny Boyle and Alex Garland being heralded as the men who reanimated the zombie (and zombie-adjacent) subgenre. Seeing as Stephen King bought out showings of 28 Days Later just so he could give them out to spread the word, that was clearly the right choice. And as Danny Boyle himself suggested, Orlando Bloom and Tom Hardy did 'do alright' in the end. Let's hope that 28 Years Later renews its franchise's King Seal of Approval, when it opens in theaters on June 20th.
