Fishermen want to continue fishing in Cooum estuary
Following incidents of small FRP boats being prevented from fishing in the Cooum river estuary, fishermen of various hamlets, including Maattankuppam and Ayodhyakuppam have urged the Indian Coast Guard and Navy to permit them to take up fishing in the area.
Community leader Kabaddi Maran said that on last Friday, a boat belonging to Maattankuppam was towed by a grey-coloured boat belonging to one of the forces. 'This is the prawn season, and they grow well in estuaries since there is a confluence of salt and fresh waters. It is not fair on the part of the Armed forces to capture our boats,' he said.
Since the annual fishing ban is on along the east coast, traditional fishermen take up fishing activity near the shore in small FRP boats. 'This is not the first time that a boat was towed by the Navy or the Coast Guard. There have been previous incidents too. We are Indians and have every right to fish in the estuary. The fishermen go for fishing in groups and in the daytime. If the Armed forces personnel have doubts, they can ask for ID cards or check with the Fisheries department,' said K. Bharathi, another community leader.
A source in the Fisheries department said that they had written to the ICG Commandant in Chennai and asked them to address the issue. 'We want to ensure the safety and rights of the fishermen.'

ICG intensifies operations as burning container vessel drifts off Kerala Coast
Kochi (Kerala) [India], June 11 (ANI): The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Thursday winched five salvage team members and an aircrew diver onto the burning Singaporean-container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 to facilitate towing operations. According to an official release from the Ministry of Defence, the vessel, which caught fire off the Kerala coast on June 9, continues to drift south-east within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approximately 42 nautical miles from Beypore, Kerala. The vessel is carrying 1.2 lakh metric tons of fuel and hundreds of containers, including hazardous cargo, posing a serious risk to the marine environment and regional shipping routes. 'Intensive firefighting efforts by ICG have significantly reduced visible flames, with only smoke now seen across the cargo holds and bays. However, the fire remains active in the inner decks and near fuel tanks,' the release stated. 'Five ICG ships, two Dornier aircraft, and a helicopter are engaged in the ongoing firefighting mission, supported by two vessels from the Directorate General of Shipping. A salvage team appointed by the ship's owners is working in coordination with ICG, and the Indian Air Force has been requested for additional aerial support,' it added. With the fire yet to be fully extinguished, efforts to establish a towline and pull the vessel away from the coast are underway to prevent a potential ecological disaster. The situation remains critical and is being monitored continuously. (ANI)

Movement of MV Wan Hai restricted
The movement of MV Wan Hai-503, the ship that caught fire and was drifting in the Arabian Sea unmanned for the last two days, is being contained by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship Samudra Prahari after connecting a towline with the ship, said a statement issued by the ICG here on Wednesday night. In a daring operation under challenging situations and weather, ICG ship deployed a three-member team on an ICG Chetak helicopter, comprising of ICG diver and salvors from MERC onto the decks of MV Wan Hai-503. The team then successfully secured the towing hawser on MV Wan Hai-503, defying all the odds. Though flames have significantly subsided, with residual smoke visible from the distressed vessel, fire remains active in the inner decks and near fuel tanks. Constant air sorties are being undertaken by ICG Dornier aircraft for sea-air coordination and real-time assessment. No new explosions were reported since early morning on Tuesday. The tilt of the vessel remains unchanged at 10-15 degrees to the port (left) side. ICG Ships Arnvesh, Rajdoot, and Kasturba Gandhi are undertaking an extended search for the four missing crew of the distressed vessel, said the statement.
