Chelsea have advantage over Man Utd in race to sign £70m Premier League star
Chelsea could rival Manchester United for a £70million-rated Premier League defender and hold a significant advantage in the transfer race. Enzo Maresca's first season at Stamford Bridge has been a success, securing the club's return to the Champions League and winning the Conference League. Chelsea could lift another trophy next month at the Club World Cup and have already won a key transfer battle, beating United to the £30m signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. And after wrapping up that deal, the Blues could pip the Red Devils to the signing of another young England star, with the Daily Mail reporting that Maresca is weighing up a move for Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite. The centre-back enjoyed a breakout season in 2023/24 which culminated in him winning his first Three Lions cap, though he just missed out on a place in the Euro 2024 squad. While Everton struggled in the first-half of last season, their form drastically improved following the return of David Moyes, with Branthwaite and James Tarkowski's partnership at the back key to the revival. United attempted to sign the 22-year-old last summer but saw two bids, the second worth £50m, rejected as the Toffees held firm to their £70m valuation. In the end, Erik ten Hag opted to buy Matthijs de Ligt instead, but United's interest in Branthwaite remains strong, with Ruben Amorim needing more centre-back depth after releasing Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans. The head coach is committed to his back-three formation and there are concerns over Lisandro Martinez's long-term fitness. However, signing Branthwaite will be no easy task as Moyes is reluctant to let the defender, who has two years left on his contract, go and would likely demand a huge fee. In April, David Moyes dismissed speculation that Everton were resigned to selling Jarrad Branthwaite in the summer. 'You have to remember Branthwaite has got a three-year contract – two years and a year's option so if anything Everton hold all the cards. 'But I also have to say over the journey over many years at Everton we had to sell players – from Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta to Joleon Lescott. It's part of being a football manager, especially at certain clubs on the journey when you have to sell to try and build as well. 'But Jarrad is not a player I would want to lose, that's for sure.' Moreover, the Mail's report adds that – same as last summer – the Everton star would only consider leaving Merseyside for a Champions League club and United are not in any European competition next season. More Trending But Chelsea are and therefore hold a huge advantage, with Maresca keen to add another centre-back to his squad. The Blues attempted to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth but he has joined Real Madrid and also have interest in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. Because of the Club World Cup, the summer transfer window has temporarily opened early and will run from June 1 to June 10. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Celtic: Forgotten player could feature in Chelsea Club World Cup tie
His Los Angeles FC side secured their place in the tournament after a dramatic 2-1 victory in extra time over Club America. The Mexicans looked set for qualification, leading 1-0 with a goal from substitute Brian Rodríguez in the 64th minute. However, a late header from Igor Jesus, his first goal for LA, forced extra time. Holm joined LA on loan from Celtic in January but has not played as much as he would have liked due to injury. His latest setback, a leg injury, kept him out of the decisive match. It remains uncertain whether he will be fit to feature in the Club World Cup. If he does recover, he could face Chelsea, who are in Group D along with Brazil's Flamengo and Tunisian club Esperánce de Tunis. LA's first game is against the English Premier League giants on June 16. They will then face Espérance de Tunis on June 20 and Flamengo on June 24. The playoff was held to decide the 32nd team in the Club World Cup after Club Leon were removed from the tournament in March for breaching ownership rules.

Garnacho wants £50m switch to Premier League rival as choice becomes clear
Alejandro Garnacho looks almost certain to leave Manchester United after falling out with manager Ruben Amorim and a move to Chelsea is reportedly on the Argentine's agenda Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho is targeting a £50million move to Chelsea this summer, despite interest from Napoli, reports claim. The Argentine forwards looks certain to leave Old Trafford after falling out with Ruben Amorim, who is said to have told the player to find a new club. Garnacho was benched by Amorim for the team's 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham and left out entirely for their final day of the season clash against Aston Villa. His manager reportedly told him "you better pray that you can find a club to sign you". The 20-year-old was forced to take part in the club's post-season tour to Asia despite being expected to depart and made it clear he was happy to return - after posting a picture of the airport runway with the caption "finally". Now Garnacho will be ramping up plans to leave United and Stamford Bridge is his No 1 choice, according to the Sun. The Blues were linked with the player in January, with his agents even being spotted in the stands at a Chelsea game. A source told the outlet he wants to stay in England, saying: " Alejandro knows the Premier League is the best in the world. And while he has had some good moments at United, he wants to establish himself as a world star. England is the best place to do that and Chelsea have assembled a lot of good young players." Garnacho publicly expressed frustration with Amorim after being dropped against Spurs in Bilbao and didn't hold back as he admitted the team had a "s***" season. "Obviously it's hard for everyone," he said after the defeat. Our season was s***. We didn't beat anyone in the league. We lacked a lot of things. When you don't score goals, you always need more. "Until we reached the final, I played every round. And I played 20 minutes today… I don't know. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next." His brother Roberto also joined him in hitting out at Amorim, accusing the Portuguese coach of "throwing him under the bus". He said: "Working as no-one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus." It is claimed Garnacho's words did not go down well with some of United players, with the same source claiming he "thinks he's the next Ronaldo" and "isn't quite as good as he thinks he is". Garnacho joined United from Atletico Madrid as a 15-year-old and he has gone on to make 144 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals. He has won the FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Old Trafford.
