Four golds and a baby boy - but what's next for Jeremiah Azu?

BBC News01-04-2025

Jeremiah Azu said he wanted 2025 to be the best year of his life.It has certainly got off to a good start. On the indoor 60m track, he became Welsh champion, British champion, European champion and world champion. He also welcomed his son into the world to become a father for the first time. After his statement win at the World Indoor Championships in China, he had some much-needed time off with his family. But a week later he is back training in the Cardiff sunshine - and dreaming of more success as the outdoor season begins."Even sometimes now it doesn't feel real," he tells BBC Sport Wales. "It's the moment when you say it out loud, that's when you really realise what you've done."
Azu is revelling in the moment."I've loved every moment since being home. My family were there cheering me on when I walked into the house, just picking me up, throwing me around. It was just a big celebration."I want to go to the top. I want to win global titles. It just adds to that motivation."Before it was for my family. But now it's really for my own son and my wife and I think you can't really beat those motivations."
'I'm just Jeremiah'
The 23-year-old has never lacked confidence. He puts it down to his family's support and unshakeable belief in God.But there is a humility to him that perhaps does not show in his customary startline dances for the cameras. Two days after becoming European indoor champion over 60m last month, he was part of an event in Wales to mark Commonwealth Day. Long after the guests had gone, he remained behind to help tidy away the chairs. On the track, the results are starting to justify that confidence in himself. He won Olympic bronze in the men's 4x100m relay in Paris last summer and his world indoor title last month has further elevated his rising status in the sport."It's easy to be confident," he continues. "You can fake it."I've never been a fake confident person. I'm just Jeremiah. Some people think I am confident, over-confident, under-confident, whatever it is. But for me it's knowing that I'm able to do what I've always believed I can do.
"I've learnt how to win and I think that's important in athletics. Because in the final everyone's fast, everyone's talented, but it's who actually believes it."Who's got that ability to not panic? Who's got that ability to time their dip right? It's all these little things that just allow you to have that confidence to walk in with the trust in the training you've done and in the team around you and your coach."His new coach is now his old coach. He first worked with Helen James as a 17-year-old and, after a two-year spell under Marco Airale in Italy, Azu is back with James in Cardiff."The world's his oyster," she tells us. "He's going to go a long way further than this."
So what next for Azu?
His focus shifts to the upcoming outdoor season and a return to China for the start of the Diamond League and World Athletics Relays event in May.When he returns to the UK again, he will add more 200m events to his 100m programme in the hope of broadening his future medal prospects and helping increase his top-end speed. But he has more than one eye already on September's World Championships in Tokyo."Coming in as world indoor champion, now there's a bit more expectation," Azu admits."But for me I'm not really doing this for anyone. I don't want to prove myself to anyone. I do this because I know I can do this. Because my ability shows me that I was born to do this."There is not a thing that I'm not going to do, there's not an exercise that I'm going to leave."I go into everything wanting to be the best. So I just continue with that mindset towards everything."

Casemiro claims season has been 'successful' despite Man Utd misery

Even though Manchester United achieved their lowest finish in Premier League history, midfielder Casemiro stated that the 2024/25 season has been one of the "most successful" of his career to date Casemiro has surprisingly deemed this season one of his "most successful" after earning the trust of Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, despite a challenging period for the team. The Brazilian midfielder appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford in January, after talks of a move to Saudi Arabia were bandied about last summer and re-emerged during the winter window. Yet when the dust settled, Casemiro remained with United. After initially falling out of Portuguese coach Amorim's favour, by around February he began to carve out more regular playing time in the Premier League and European competitions. ‌ The 33-year-old became integral to the squad that battled its way to the Europa League final, noticing an uptick in appearances as the season drew to a close. ‌ Casemiro, while on duty with the Brazil national team, has now shed light on discussions held with Amorim earlier in his tenure, boldly stating that, for him, personally, it was indeed a successful year. "This year has been one of the most important years of my career, if not the most. Even because of the coach's choice [Ruben Amorim]. I was left out [of the options], but I never stopped working," Casemiro revealed. "That's my great success. Everyone wants to talk about titles, victories and big games, but when you don't play and you manage to change the mind of a coach who arrives and doesn't play you. "You end up coming back, and now you're being praised by the coach who at first practically didn't count on you... it was one of my most successful years. "These are things that end up happening internally. I'm one of those people who, when things happen internally, I don't like to say too much." ‌ Despite United's struggles, Casemiro donned the Red Devils' kit 42 times this term, netting five times and contributing three assists. His personal comeback stands in stark contrast to United's disappointing campaign, which saw them lumber to their lowest Premier League ranking in history, finishing 15th, and suffering 14 defeats, a figure not seen since 1990. The Brazilian midfielder faced severe criticism in September following a harrowing first-half display against Liverpool, where his error led to Luis Diaz opening the scoring after just 35 minutes. Not long after, Casemiro lost possession again, allowing Diaz to score once more before Erik ten Hag subbed him off at the break, with United eventual 3-0 losers. ‌ Casemiro shed light on his discussions with his manager during challenging times, stating (via the Manchester Evening News): "I don't think there's been such a big relapse in my individual aspect, but when the club isn't playing well, changes are needed. "I spoke to him [Amorim] and he told me that it was more a question of choosing to play, that I should wait for the opportunity. Of course, he was open with me. "He said it was his choice, nothing against me. I had no choice but to carry on working and wait for the opportunity. When I played, I lived up to what he asked."
