SFI protest over Kannur University Dean appointments ends in clashes
A march organised by the Students Federation of India (SFI) to protest the controversial appointment of Faculty Deans at Kannur University erupted into clashes on Monday (May 5), leaving several injured and resulting in multiple arrests.
The protest was staged in response to the alleged violation of the Kannur University Act, 1996, which stipulates that Deans must be appointed on a rotation basis from among heads of departments or professors within the University.
Instead, ten individuals from external institutions were appointed, triggering widespread discontent among both student and teacher communities.
As the University Syndicate convened, SFI workers—led by district president T.P. Akhila and Taliparamba area secretary Atul—stormed the venue and broke down the office door. The police arrested the agitators and forcefully removed them, during which Atul sustained facial injuries. Around seven activists who staged a sit-in inside were detained, while others continued protesting at both gates, leading to a prolonged scuffle with the police. Additional personnel were deployed to disperse the demonstrators.
The University Syndicate later passed a resolution expressing strong opposition to the appointments. Critics argued that the selections bypassed eligible in-house candidates, undermining the University's Faculty. Syndicate member N. Sukanya alleged political interference behind the move.
'This decision tramples on the Kannur University Act. The appointment suggests BJP-Sangh Parivar influence. The SAI director appointed is due for retirement in a month. What has the University gained from this?' she asked.
Ms. Sukanya called for the newly issued list to be frozen and demanded that the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor adopt a democratic appointment process.

Out for morning walk, two friends die in hit & run in Ghazaiabad
Ghaziabad: Two neighbours who'd been friends for a decade were run over at the Rotary roundabout in Raj Nagar Extension while they were on an early morning walk, a ritual they had followed for years, on Friday. According to police, Subhash Singh (57) and Kamlesh Yadav (45), residents of Brij Nagri in Nandgram, left for the walk around 5am. They were on their way back around 5.30am when a four-wheeler rammed into them from the back. Its driver sped away. Kamlesh's son Atul told TOI some neighbours informed the family about the accident. "We reached the spot and took them to a nearby hospital. Both of them succumbed to their injuries within an hour," Atul said. Atul, a BJP functionary, said his father was the RWA president of the colony and Subhash was an e-rickshaw driver. "They had been friends for 10 years and were living in the area for the past five years. When Covid-19 happened, they decided to go for morning walks to become fit. They'd leave at 5am and return by 6am," Atul said. Nandgram ACP Poonam Mishra said a police team was rushed to the spot of the accident on Friday morning and was trying to gather information about the vehicle that hit the two men. "We have registered an FIR against an unknown driver under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public place) of BNS at the Nandgram police station," the ACP said. Atul said there were few eyewitnesses near the roundabout at the time of the crash. The ACP said two teams have been formed to investigate the case. "Police are also checking CCTV footage of nearby areas to identify the vehicle," she said. 18 injured in DME accident Eighteen people on a Tempo Traveller were injured after its driver fell asleep at the wheel and collided with another vehicle on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway near Modinagar in the city on Friday. Student organisations accuse corporate colleges of ‘rank scam,' demand action
Leaders of student organisations have accused certain corporate college managements of resorting to what they call the 'Ranks' scam.' At a press conference in Vijayawada on Thursday, Student Federation of India (SFI) state secretary Prasanna Kumar alleged that after the JEE (Advanced)-2025 results were announced on June 2, many corporate colleges began making false claims that the top rankers belonged to their respective coaching centre or institution. Citing examples, he said: 'Majid Hussain, who secured an all-India 3rd rank, was falsely claimed as a student of a private college, while in reality he attended coaching classes at a private academy in Madhya Pradesh. Similarly, Akshat Kumar, who secured an all-India 6th rank, did not study in a private college as claimed by them but was a student of another private academy.' He added that in the race to garner a bigger pie of the student talent for the next academic batches, these corporate colleges made false claims over successful students' ranks to deceive students and parents. He said: 'There was a sharp decline in enrolments in these colleges as a large number of students were resorting to taking the extreme step of suicide. The government must take measures to check these fraudulent practices.' The leaders of the All-India Students Federation (AISF) also made similar charges against educational institutions and have said that the practice of multiple institutions claiming credit for the success of a single candidate in entrance exams can be misleading for parents. They demanded action against Telugu film actors, who serve as brand ambassadors for these institutions.
