Pahalgam terror attack: Muslim community protests wearing black bands; demands strict action
New Delhi: In a strong and unified expression of grief and condemnation, members of the Muslim community across India observed a solemn protest during Friday prayers, calling for decisive action against terrorism after the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead and many others injured.
Mosques across cities including Hyderabad, Delhi, Bhopal, Varanasi, and Lucknow witnessed a wave of solidarity as Muslim worshippers wore black bands on their arms as a mark of mourning and resistance against terrorism during the Juma Namaz (Friday prayers).
In Hyderabad, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi distributed black bands among worshippers before offering Namaz at a mosque in Shastripuram. He condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims' families.
In the national Capital, AIMIM's Delhi state president Dr Shoaib Jamai also led a peaceful protest during the Friday prayers.
'What happened in Pahalgam is extremely unfortunate for the country, and curse be upon the terrorists who carried out this heinous act,' Jamaai said, wearing a black band in protest.
In Bhopal, worshippers arrived at local mosques wearing black bands. 'We will offer prayers while wearing black bands in protest against the Pahalgam attack,' said a youth from the community.
Another added, 'If the government cannot punish a ruthless country like Pakistan, then open the borders, we, Hindus and Muslims together, will teach such a nation a lesson. We don't even want to utter its name.'
In Varanasi, thousands gathered at the Jama Masjid in Nadesar, where prayers were offered for the souls of those who lost their lives in the attack. Similarly, in Lucknow, protests were held at the Asifi Masjid in the historic Imambara, where worshippers raised slogans against terrorism and Pakistan.
Worshippers across all these cities also prayed for peace and harmony in the country. 'We prayed for the souls of those killed in Kashmir and for peace to prevail in our nation,' said one of the attendees.

People protested in Dhubri town on Sunday after pieces of meat were found near a temple. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the town on Monday and it was withdrawn the next day. Guwahati, Jun 13 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that shoot-at-sight orders will be in force at night in Dhubri district, bordering Bangladesh, as a 'communal group' is trying to create disturbances which the government will not tolerate. 'The order for shoot-at-sight will be issued immediately after I reach Guwahati today and anybody coming out at night or throwing stones will be arrested,' he said. Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF personnel will be deployed in the district and all criminals in Dhubri will be arrested, he said. 'All those who have taken law into their hands will be dealt with severely,' the chief minister said. The law and order situation in Dhubri has been challenging for the last one week, he added. Sarma said that on the day after the Bakrid festival on June 7, a cow's head was found in front of the Hanuman Temple in the district headquarters, following which both Hindus and Muslims appealed for peace and harmony. The next day, however, a cow's head was again kept in front of the temple and stones were thrown at night, Sarma added. A day before Bakrid, an organisation named 'Nabin Bangla' had put up 'provocative posters' highlighting their aim to include Dhubri in Bangladesh, Sarma said. 'A communal group has become active in Dhubri to create disturbances and after coming to know about it, I have come to Dhubri and there will be shoot-at-sight orders in force at night in the district,' he added. All criminals in Dhubri will be arrested and all those who have taken law into their hands will be dealt with severely, he added. Earlier during Bakrid, a section of people did consume beef but this time thousands of cattle have been brought from West Bengal and a 'new beef mafia' has emerged in Dhubri who procured thousands of animals just ahead of the festival, Sarma alleged. 'This has come to my knowledge and I have ordered an inquiry into this. I have directed the authorities to arrest who has started this cattle trade,' Sarma said. He said that next year, he himself will come to Dhubri on the day of Eid and stay the next day as well. 'We cannot allow a section of the community to create such disturbances. Our government will not tolerate this and allow Dhubri to go out of our hands,' Sarma asserted. He said that if required he would guard the Hanuman Mandir for the whole night. For Telangana Congress leader Mohammed Asaduddin, cricket is an integral part of his identity because of his father Mohammad Azharuddin, but it is one he decided not to pursue despite making it to the Ranji level. Instead, the 35-year-old has opted to follow in his father's footsteps into politics, which was Azharuddin's choice of career after his cricketing days were over, and on Thursday was appointed a state Congress general secretary. Azhar, as the former India captain is popularly known to cricket fans, was a popular cricketer because of his stylish batting, sharp fielding skills, and for leading India to victories in 14 tests and 90 ODIs. After hanging up his cap, he saw success in his second innings as a Congress politician, getting elected to the Lok Sabha from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh in 2009. Since then, he has faced electoral setbacks, first losing the Lok Sabha contest from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur in 2014 and the 2023 Telangana Assembly polls from his home turf of Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad.
