FIFA investigates if Real Madrid's Rüdiger was racially abused by opponent at Club World Cup
MIAMI (AP) — FIFA has opened a disciplinary case at the Club World Cup after Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger claimed he was racially abused by Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral.
Rüdiger, who is Black, and Cabral clashed in the final minutes of Madrid's 3-1 win Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After the German player spoke to referee Ramon Abatti, the Brazilian match official made the FIFA-approved signal with raised arms crossed to start an anti-discrimination protocol.
FIFA confirmed late Tuesday it is formally investigating.
'Following an assessment of the match reports, the FIFA disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against Pachuca player Gustavo Cabral in relation to the incident involving him and Real Madrid's Antonio Rüdiger,' the soccer body said.
A verdict is likely before Pachuca plays Thursday in its final Group H game, against Al Hilal in Nashville. It will be Pachuca's last game at the Club World Cup because the Mexican team cannot finish higher than third in the standings and will not advance to the round of 16.

Scoring off both feet, it was the winner in particular that demonstrated the authority Lee Carsley would have wanted to see from one of the two players who was part of the Euro 2023-winning squad. Having opened the scoring with a powerful right-footed effort he is now the second highest scorer in the tournament with four goals. Despite waiting late to book their place in Saturday's final, England deserved their win. Carsley's side started fast, with four of their five first half shots coming in the opening 12 minutes. Liverpool getting closer to €70m deal
Liverpool are reportedly getting closer to a €70m transfer. The Reds have been working on it for a little while now. Liverpool have spent a lot of money already this summer. Florian Wirtz counts for the vast majority of that, of course. But he's not the only deal. Jeremie Frimpong also arrived from Leverkusen for just shy of £30m. Milos Kerkez will join him for even more money - we're expecting a £40m deal to be announced any moment now. The crazy thing is that Liverpool have done all of this without major player sales. Their Premier League PSR spending room has been great enough that they haven't really had to. Though, the major sales are coming and the Reds appear to be closing in on a €70m deal. But they must get closer to that €70m - maybe even paying all of it - if they're to sign the Uruguayan. Napoli's consideration, though, suggests the chances of that are growing. It appears Liverpool are getting closer to their valuation. That would be a major deal and one that potentially funds further major transfers later in the window.
