FIFA investigates if Real Madrid's Rüdiger was racially abused by opponent at Club World Cup
MIAMI (AP) — FIFA has opened a disciplinary case at the Club World Cup after Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger claimed he was racially abused by Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral.
Rüdiger, who is Black, and Cabral clashed in the final minutes of Madrid's 3-1 win Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After the German player spoke to referee Ramon Abatti, the Brazilian match official made the FIFA-approved signal with raised arms crossed to start an anti-discrimination protocol.
FIFA confirmed late Tuesday it is formally investigating.
'Following an assessment of the match reports, the FIFA disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against Pachuca player Gustavo Cabral in relation to the incident involving him and Real Madrid's Antonio Rüdiger,' the soccer body said.
A verdict is likely before Pachuca plays Thursday in its final Group H game, against Al Hilal in Nashville. It will be Pachuca's last game at the Club World Cup because the Mexican team cannot finish higher than third in the standings and will not advance to the round of 16.

England Under-21s reach Euros final after 2-1 win over the Netherlands
England will play in the final of the European Under-21 Championship after beating the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-finals on Wednesday at the Kosicka Futbalova Arena in Kosice, Slovakia. Two goals from Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot ensured that Lee Carsley's side would play in back-to-back finals after winning the competition in 2023. Advertisement The first half ended goalless after Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs made two saves to keep out Elliott and Omari Hutchinson in intense heat in eastern Slovakia. The breakthrough came after half-time as Newcastle United's Elliot Anderson drove at the Netherlands back line before playing in Elliott who fired past Roefs in the 62nd minute. Substitute Noah Ohio stunned England with his first touch of the game 10 minutes later, finding the net from well outside of the box to catch out goalkeeper James Beadle at his near post. However, Elliott restored England's lead in the 82nd minute, drifting past defenders before finding the bottom-right corner from the edge of the box to score his fourth goal of the tournament. 'To win is incredible, can't put it into words,' Elliott told Channel 4 after the game. 'Another final, I know I keep saying it but we need to rest, recover, and go again because it's not over yet. Tonight was another amazing experience, really tough conditions once again but the way the lads dug deep, I think we deserve this final. 'It's been really tough preparation-wise. We've had a lot of players that had to drop out because of the Club World Cup, transfer and things like that. 'We want to do it for everyone that couldn't be here and we want to do it for ourselves as well and all of the supporters here to support us and the supporters back home. 'It's just one last push now and hopefully we can be crowned champions again.' England beat Spain 3-1 to earn their place in the semi-finals, while the Netherlands beat Portugal 1-0. They will play the winners of Germany vs. France which takes place later on Wednesday. Analysis from Art de Roche That second half was about Harvey Elliott taking charge. Scoring off both feet, it was the winner in particular that demonstrated the authority Lee Carsley would have wanted to see from one of the two players who was part of the Euro 2023-winning squad. Advertisement Elliott smelt blood as he turned onto his left foot just outside the box, and took full advantage. Having opened the scoring with a powerful right-footed effort he is now the second highest scorer in the tournament with four goals. That should serve him well after admitting he is wary of 'wasting years' of his career by not playing regularly at club level before travelling to Slovakia. Despite waiting late to book their place in Saturday's final, England deserved their win. Carsley's side started fast, with four of their five first half shots coming in the opening 12 minutes. Ipswich Town's Omari Hutchinson, who has impressed throughout the tournament, was key to these efforts with runs around the outside and inside of the opposition right-back leading to those chances. Collectively, the team has grown as the tournament has progressed. They gained much-needed momentum against Spain which carried through to their performance against the Netherlands, and will give them encouragement ahead of the final. Liverpool getting closer to €70m deal
Liverpool are reportedly getting closer to a €70m transfer. The Reds have been working on it for a little while now. Liverpool have spent a lot of money already this summer. Florian Wirtz counts for the vast majority of that, of course. Advertisement The Reds have broken their transfer record to sign the German playmaker. £100m went to Bayer Leverkusen and with that, Liverpool secured one of the biggest talents in world football. But he's not the only deal. Jeremie Frimpong also arrived from Leverkusen for just shy of £30m. Milos Kerkez will join him for even more money - we're expecting a £40m deal to be announced any moment now. The crazy thing is that Liverpool have done all of this without major player sales. Their Premier League PSR spending room has been great enough that they haven't really had to. Though, the major sales are coming and the Reds appear to be closing in on a €70m deal. Liverpool to sell Darwin Nunez Gazzetta dello Sport claims Liverpool and Napoli are discussing Darwin Nunez. Now, they're far from the only outlet claiming that, of course. Advertisement The Italian champions are eager to sign Nunez, as reported by just about everyone right now. They hope to seal a deal for a player they believe can move them up another level. But there is a 'catch'. The Gazzetta report says Napoli have offered around €40m for Nunez, while Liverpool want close to €70m. That's an enormous price difference but the suggestion is that Napoli are considering a major offer. They're big fans of Nunez and really want this deal to happen. But they must get closer to that €70m - maybe even paying all of it - if they're to sign the Uruguayan. Napoli's consideration, though, suggests the chances of that are growing. It appears Liverpool are getting closer to their valuation. That would be a major deal and one that potentially funds further major transfers later in the window.
