Prince Harry makes visit to Ukraine, meets with wounded veterans

The Hill11-04-2025

Prince Harry is touching down in Ukraine, getting a first-hand look at a rehabilitation center in the war-torn country.
The Duke of Sussex visited the Superhumans Center in Lviv on Thursday, a spokesperson confirmed to ITK.
The organization describes its mission as providing a free 'modern rehabilitation center' for adults and children who have suffered 'life-changing injuries,' including prosthetics, psychological support and reconstructive surgery.
The 40-year-old member of the British royal family, who founded the Invictus Games — an international sports competition for wounded military veterans and personnel — in 2014, wanted to see for himself the rehab services in a country at war, a spokesperson for Harry told ITK.
Harry, along with a group from the Invictus Games Foundation, toured the center and met with patients, medics and veterans during the visit, the spokesperson said.
It's not the first time that Harry has offered support for Ukraine's veterans since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. In April of that year, Harry honored Ukrainian team members during the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games, telling them, 'We stand with you.'
Harry was invited to visit Ukraine by Superhumans Center CEO Olga Rudneva last year and again at the Invictus Games in Vancouver in February.

Michael Johnson cancels Grand Slam Track's LA meet amid financial concerns

Michael Johnson will cancel the fourth and final meet of the inaugural Grand Slam Track season in Los Angeles to avoid major financial losses at the event. Athletes and their representatives will be updated in a Zoom call on Thursday amid silence in the build-up to the LA leg scheduled for 28-29 June, after competing 'challenger' athletes were not announced ahead of time as they were before the previous three meets. Advertisement The Independent understands that the economics of the LA event, and Grand Slam Track's deal with its host partner, UCLA, had become financially unviable. New investors are set to be announced next week and sources inside Grand Slam Track suggested that making the best short-term financial decision was key to ensuring the longer-term outlook of the project. The Los Angeles leg will not be replaced with another host city and the season will instead come to a premature end. But organisers remain confident that Grand Slam Track will continue in 2026, with LA likely to be on the circuit, and have privately stressed the positives of what they insist has been a relatively successful 'pilot' year. Before the opening event in Kingston, Jamaica, Johnson's co-founder Steve Gera told The Independent that they were 'maniacally focused on having the youngest fanbase of any sports league in the world in the next five years'. Josh Kerr, Dina Asher-Smith, Fred Kerley and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone signed up to Grand Slam Track (Getty/The Independent) The star-studded list of athletes – which included US stars Kenny Bednarek, Gabrielle Thomas and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone as well as British names including Josh Kerr and Dina Asher-Smith – competed in two linked events, such as 100m and 200m sprints, with results combined to calculate the winners in each category. Prize money for winners stood at $100,000, with $50,000 for runners-up and $10,000 for eighth place. Advertisement The competition was billed as a much-needed shot in the arm for athletics, although the decision to include only track events and omit field disciplines was met with criticism. 'I am going to save what I think I can save,' Johnson explained. 'I think I can save track, I don't think I can save track and field.' But ticket sales have been slow and sponsorship and broadcast revenues have not met lofty expectations. The Times reports that organisers will save around £2.2m in prize money and travel expenses by cancelling the Los Angeles event. Some of the action has played out in half-empty stadiums, although the third event in Philadelphia was more popular, with close to 30,000 tickets sold over two days after the action was compressed from the three days of events held in Kingston and Miami. A disappointing crowd in Jamaica prompted organisers to review their locations for 2026, with a variety of other markets being considered, including European cities. Advertisement Gera told The Independent in March: 'We had discussions with a couple of different cities across the UK [but] that was a decision that we made to just focus on tightly packaging our run of shows [in the Americas] in year one. But we're really excited to get the product into Europe in the not too distant future.' Grand Slam Track is set to officially confirm its decision on the LA event later on Thursday. Organisers declined to comment.

Itauma vs Whyte official for Aug. 16 in Riyadh

As revealed over the weekend, Moses Itauma will face Dillian Whyte in the main event of an August 16th Riyadh show that accompanies the Esports World Cup. Itauma (12-0, 10 KO) is the heavyweight division's top prospect at just 20 years of age, demolishing his last eight opponents in under two rounds apiece. Whyte (31-3, 21 KO) is by far his most noteworthy opponent to date, but it's an open question whether he's the best; his only wins in the last 2.5 years came over professional loser Christian Hammer and the similarly hapless Ebenezer Tetteh, whom he took seven full rounds to beat when Daniel Dubois and Frazer Clarke each needed less than one. Advertisement The co-feature sees Nick Ball (22-0-1, 13 KO) defend his WBA belt against a third consecutive super bantamweight in former IBF mandatory challenger Sam Goodman (20-0, 8 KO). It's a markedly less interesting matchup than Ball's proposed clash with Luis Nery. The real standout bout pits the resurgent Anthony Cacace (24-1, 9 KO) against Raymond Ford (17-1-1, 8 KO) in one of the best super featherweight bouts you could make without a belt on the line. Heavyweight contender FIlip Hrgovic (18-1, 14 KO) also sees action against British champ David Adeleye (14-1, 13 KO) and super-prospect Hayato Tstutsumi (7-0, 4 KO) steps way back in competition against Qais Ashfaq (13-3-1, 5 KO). Katie Boulter drops unexpected news about Alex de Minaur amid heartbreak

Katie Boulter hasn't ruled out a future mixed doubles appearance with partner Alex de Minaur, but her tough season has continued having lost her British No.1 ranking during a brutal defeat at The Queen's Club. Women are once again playing at the prestigious English tournament for the first time since 1973 and Boulter led the draw as the No.1 British ranked star. However, Boulter's rollercoaster form has once again seen her go down in the round of 16 in a three-set defeat to No.5 seed Diana Schnaider. With Alex de Minaur supporting Boulter at Queen's, the 28-year-old struggled on her serve after making nine double faults in her loss. And her latest setback means she will lose her No.1 British ranking to doubles teammate Emma Raducanu. The former US Open winner, Raducanu, reached the quarter-final at Queen's as she starts to gather momentum before Wimbledon. She faces a huge task against No.1 seed Qinweng Zheng in the next round, but has regathered the title of her nation's best player. While Raducanu is also struggling for form in 2025, Boulter's dip has seen her lose the No.1 ranking. But Boulter was full of praise for Raducanu after acknowledging she had lost the ranking, before putting it behind her to team up with her British teammate in the women's doubles at Queen's. The pair won their first clash, but fell to Erin Routliffe and Lyudmyla Kichenok in the quarter-final. Raducanu suggested she wants to team up with Boulter again in the near future, which leaves the question whether they will play doubles at Wimbledon in a few weeks. Although Boutler also hinted she would be open to playing doubles again with fiance de Minaur if given the opportunity. Emma Raducanu signs the camera after reaching Queens QF:'Long live Boultercanu' ❤️ — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) June 12, 2025 Speaking ahead of the tournament, Boulter was asked whether she would ever play mixed doubles again with de Minaur. The duo played together at Wimbledon in 2023, which was a huge hit with the fans. The pair have also played against each other in mixed doubles at the United Cup in Australia, which went Boulter's way. And Boulter hasn't ruled out teaming up with de Minaur at the revamped US Open mixed doubles tournament later this year. "You never know," she said on Performance People Podcast. "I don't think we have ruled it out, but I don't think we've had a conversation about it." This has given a number of tennis fans hope of seeing Boulter and de Minaur back on the same side of the court again in the near future. De Minaur will now be preparing for his grass court campaign after he made a shock exit at the French Open in the second round. The Aussie has played a lot of tennis this year already and opted to skip Stuttgart to cheer on Boulter at Queen's. The duo were captured training together at the tournament with de Minaur set to kickstart the next chapter of his season soon. The Aussie talked about fatigue and the gruelling tennis schedule after his shock elimination in Paris and has taken the opoortunity to get some well earned rest having played 38 singles matches this year, wining 27 of them. De Minaur is currently holding onto his World No.10 ranking, which will be important heading into Wimbledon.
