United Airlines Had to Cancel Major Flight to Newark Airport
Newark's Liberty International Airport has been hit hard by delays and technical issues over the last few weeks, and a major transatlantic flight headed for the airport was recently canceled.
The flight, which was set to leave from Edinburgh Airport in Scotland, was canceled due to a mechanical issue. The United Airlines flight was set to feature a Boeing 757 aircraft before being canceled.
The plane returned to its gate and passengers were diverted to other flights out of the same airport.
Passengers were sent to the next available flights to Newark, and United added that it was working to ensure as little disruption and delay as possible.
After the mechanical issue was detected and passengers left the aircraft, United looked to assess and fix the issue with the plane. The airline did not reveal the exact issue that caused the cancellation, only noting that the safety of passengers was the number one priority.
Hundreds of delays are recorded at the Newark airport every day, largely due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. The problem was made even worse by a busy Memorial Day travel weekend, likely the first of many this summer.
Old equipment and runway renovations have also contributed to the delays at the airport, with travelers stuck waiting to leave for hours at a congested and understaffed airport and air traffic control space.
Federal authorities have intervened at the airport, issuing restrictions that allow only 28 departures and 28 arrivals per hour. The staggered flight plan is expected to continue through mid-June, and could be extended for longer if it's seen as necessary.
On Sunday, FlightAware says that planes were coming into the airport and leaving it at an average of 35 minutes late from their expected departure time.
Many travelers have avoided the Newark airport over the last few weeks, and that plan could be an intelligent one during the summer.
Whether it's taking the train, driving or simply just going to a different airport, Newark has a long way to go before it's up to par with other major international airports around the country.

School board chair defends controversial tax vote that could trigger state audit
Fayette school board chairman Tyler Murphy on Friday defended the school district in the face of a threatened state audit, lawmakers' criticism and a Kentucky attorney general's opinion of unlawfulness. 'FCPS is not the problem. In fact, we've stepped up time and again to fill the gap left by misplaced priorities at the state and federal levels, recognizing that our public schools remain the bedrock of our community and our local economy,' Murphy said in a Facebook post. Republican Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman ruled Wednesday the school board failed to provide the legally required notice to the public before its May 27 meeting and vote to ask the fiscal court to raise the occupational license tax for schools. On Friday, Fayette Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said the school board will hold a second vote on June 23. The school board will also a public hearing on a yet to be announced day on raising the tax. Parents and other people in the community, Democrats and Republicans, have expressed concerns about a lack of transparency in how the school board handled the vote. Notice of a May 27 vote was made known to the public only when it was attached to an online meeting agenda on the Memorial Day weekend before. Some have raised concerns about the school board's process, others about the possibility of a tax rate increase, and many others about the district's budget shortfall. Republican Kentucky Auditor Allison Ball said Thursday she is considering a financial examination or audit of the school district. Sen. Amanda Mays Bledsoe, R-Lexington, and Rep. Matt Lockett, R-Nicholasville are among those criticizing the district for a lack of transparency. Bledsoe asked for the AG opinion and talked to Ball about conducting a state audit. That drew a rebuke from Murphy. 'We don't need lectures from those pushing policies that harm working families and children,' he said. 'Our community rejected voucher schemes at the ballot box, and our community will continue to defend public education from political theatrics designed to distract and divide,' he said. 'While we always welcome dialogue and feedback that help us improve, it's important that the conversation begins with facts and reflects the reality of the work happening in our schools each day.' According to the attorney general's opinion, the school board's 3-2 vote to ask the Fayette Fiscal Court to increase school tax rates on residents and businesses' net income from 0.5% to 0.75% was improper. That's because, under state law, school boards must notify the public and hold a formal hearing before voting on new or increased taxes. Fayette school district officials argue the vote was legal and the tax increase was needed to cover a $16 million budget shortfall. The district recently approved an $848 million tentative budget for 2025-2026. The reality is that FCPS is a district with real momentum, he said: ▪ The district has received five consecutive perfect financial audits from independent, outside auditors, demonstrating responsible fiscal stewardship. ▪ Not a single FCPS school is labeled 'underperforming.' ▪ Though FCPS educates 6% of Kentucky's students, Fayette students account for 34% of the state's highest academic performers. ▪ The district continues to narrow opportunity gaps for student groups who have historically been underserved, improving outcomes in academic achievement, access to advanced coursework and readiness for college, careers, and life. ▪ FCPS maintains a financial transparency dashboard where anyone can track the district's expenses and budget. He said FCPS is on budget and in the black for FY2025. 'While we are proud of the progress being made, we are equally committed to transparency and continuous improvement. We know we must keep raising the bar for ourselves, in how we communicate, how we govern, and how we deliver on the promise of public education,' Murphy said 'That said, it's hard to ignore the broader political landscape. At a time when Washington and Frankfort are plagued by division, and decisions are too often made to benefit the powerful few, public schools have become a convenient target.'

Over 800 flights delayed amid storms on Friday, 24 canceled

Hawkins wrote. The deal was set to expire in 2025. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company is in the 'study phase' of using stablecoins as a way to transfer money worldwide, Bloomberg's Natalie Lung and Tom Giles reported. Stablecoins seems to have 'a practical benefit other than crypto's historic value,' the CEO said during an interview at the Bloomberg Tech conference San Francisco. Khosrowshahi added that the stablecoin is 'quite promising especially for global companies' since it can help cut costs of moving money around among different countries. Founders Fund has led an enormous funding round in defense technology startup Anduril with a $1B investment as part of a new $2.5B round, TechCrunch's Julie Bort wrote. Existing investors also took part in the funding round for the company, which was founded by Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey, the author said, citing an Anduril spokesperson. The defense tech startup has now doubled its valuation to $30.5B with this Series G increase, the author noted. RTX (RTX) and Northrop Grumman (NOC) announced four successful tests of flight-ready Highly Loaded Grain solid rocket motors for the U.S. Army's Next-Generation Short-Range Interceptor. HLG is a solid propellant technology for rocket motors that provides longer burn time and more energy output than conventional solid rocket motors, which extends the range of Raytheon's NGSRI offering compared to other missiles. Site construction is underway and will be completed in multiple phases between 2026 and 2030. Uber, in a regulatory filing, announced that on May 31, appointed Nikesh Arora to the board. 'Nikesh is a globally respected business leader with deep experience across technology, finance, and cybersecurity,' said Ron Sugar, independent chairperson of the board. 'His leadership in scaling innovative businesses and navigating complex international markets will be invaluable as Uber continues to grow and evolve.' Arora has served as the chairman of the board and CEO of Palo Alto Networks (PANW) since June 2018. According to a regulatory filing, Boeing entered into a non-prosecution agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice that, subject to court proceedings, resolves matters relating to the Department's determination that the company did not fulfill its obligations under the previously-disclosed deferred prosecution agreement entered into by the company and the Department on January 6, 2021. Pursuant to the NPA, the company is subject to a $487.2M overall criminal monetary penalty, $243.6M of which was paid in 2021 pursuant to the DPA and the remaining $243.6M of which was included in amounts expensed by the company in 2024 pursuant to the proposed plea agreement between the company and the Department filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on July 24, 2024. The NPA also requires the company, among other things, to pay $444.5M in additional compensation to the heirs and/or beneficiaries of those who died in the Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 accidents, to invest $455M in the company's compliance, safety, and quality programs through the end of the term of the NPA, to retain an independent compliance consultant to assess the company's progress regarding remediation and implementation of the compliance measures described in the NPA and the attachments thereto, to continue to implement a compliance program, and to continue to undertake a review of its internal controls, policies and procedures. The Department agreed that it will not further criminally prosecute the company for any conduct described in the NPA provided that the Company performs all of its obligations under the NPA, including those described above. The NPA has a term of two years from the date on which the company retains the independent compliance consultant, unless the NPA is extended or terminated earlier as described therein. China is considering placing an order for hundreds of Airbus (EADSY) aircraft as soon as next month, with deliberations underway with Chinese airlines about the size of the potential order, Bloomberg's Siddharth Vikram Philip and Danny Lee reported. The deal could involve around 300 planes, including both narrowbody and widebody models, according to people familiar with the matter. Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (KTOS) and GE Aerospace (GE) announced a formal teaming agreement to advance propulsion technologies for the next generation of unmanned aerial systems and Collaborative Combat Aircraft-type aircraft. Eaton (ETN) and Siemens Energy (SMNEY) have announced a fast-track approach to building data centers with integrated onsite power. Uber announced the departure of Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, senior VP, delivery, and the appointment of Andrew Macdonald as president and COO, effective immediately. Macdonald joined Uber in 2012 and has served in a range of leadership roles at the company.
