New Orleans inmates appear to taunt jailers in photos of hole they escaped from: 'To Easy Lol'
Photos released Friday by the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office offer a look at how officials believe 10 inmates escaped from a jail in New Orleans.
The photos appear to show a large, rectangular hole leading outside the cell. The hole, which has some metal bars, is cut behind where a sink and toilet typically sit.
Horizontal bars that should be in the top half of the opening appear to be missing.
It was not immediately clear if the inmates created the opening or if they discovered it and planned an escape around it.
The inmates appeared to have written messages around the opening in the wall, including "To Easy Lol" and "We Innocent."
Other photos released by officials appear to show the toilet pulled from the wall where it had presumably been attached. Pipes that served the toilet appear to be disconnected.
At an afternoon news conference, Sheriff Susan Hutson said that it was difficult for inmates to escape without outside help and that officials are investigating whether anyone aided the escapees. She later said there is indication the escapees had help from individuals inside the department.
She said that defective locks on jail cells contributed to the escape. Detainees were pulling on the cells, breaking them off their tracks, she said, around 12:23 a.m., when they were able to break open a door.
They escaped after 1 a.m. through the hole in the wall before exiting a door, scaling a wall and running across a major road, Hutson said.
The inmates were discovered to be missing during a routine head count at 8:30 a.m.
One of the men, Kendall Myles, was apprehended Friday by police in the French Quarter after a brief pursuit on foot.
The remaining nine men remain on the run, and officials have said they should be considered armed and dangerous.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The hunt for Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey is entering its fourth week after they allegedly escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center, and new developments are still coming almost daily. Earlier this week, a home in the Fairgrounds neighborhood was raided after two videos surfaced online with Massey proclaiming his innocence. Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair agrees, saying Groves appears to be lying low. As for Massey, Fair thinks the videos, and a photograph found on social media just yesterday could be a strategic move. 'I think he's trying to throw his case out, that he's innocent of the charges. Could he be pretending to be somewhere else? Yeah, absolutely. We don't know that for a fact. Could be trying to throw us off like 'I am in Houston' while he's still here or wherever he is,' said Fair. Legal analyst Barry Ranshi says the photo and videos could backfire in court for Massey. 'Can't imagine a scenario with that type of information that he is posting on the run, acknowledging that he left the facility, that it would help. The prosecutors will have to authenticate the evidence, assuming that they're able to meet that threshold, that would be evidence,' said Ranshi. Three more escaped New Orleans inmates have been caught, while two still remain at large
On Friday, May 16, at around 1 a.m., 10 inmates escaped from Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans, Louisiana. The inmates escaped by pulling a 'defective' cell door off its tracks and exiting through a hole in the wall that was behind a toilet and sink unit, authorities said. The escaped inmates, ranging in age from 16 to 42, have charges that range from aggravated assault to murder. On May 26, authorities captured two of the escaped prisoners following a high-speed pursuit in Texas. The two escapees, Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald, were caught after fleeing from police in a white SUV in Walker County, Texas. The vehicle Tate and Donald were in sped past police cars, then made a U-turn and drove in the wrong direction on a divided state highway. The pair eventually pulled over and surrendered to the police, AP News reported. Another escapee, Lenton Vanburen Jr., was captured after a concerned citizen made an anonymous tip. Vanburen Jr. was found Monday evening, May 26, sitting on a bench near a department store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The escaped inmates Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey are currently still on the run. Authorities have asked the public to call the police if they have any information that may result in finding the escapees, and authorities are offering $20,000 in rewards for tips that lead to Groves and Massey's arrest. Groves was convicted on two charges of second-degree murder and two charges of attempted second-degree murder in October in connection with a shooting that occurred during Mardi Gras in 2018. Groves also faces a battery charge against a correctional facility employee, USA Today reported. Massey was convicted and charged with domestic abuse involving strangulation and theft of a motor vehicle. Massey also has a warrant out for his arrest for second-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping, domestic abuse involving strangulation and violation of a protective order involving battery from an incident in November, USA Today reported. The inmates seem to have used a tool to cut through steel bars located behind the toilet and sink fixture, creating an opening large enough for them to escape, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office. The escapees were able to rip out the toilet and sink unit after the water had been shut off by jail employee Sterling Williams. Williams has since been charged with multiple counts of being a principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office, USA Today reported. The inmates reportedly left behind a message written on the wall above the hole they escaped through, and this message read, "To Easy LoL."
