Kerala students face panic during drone attack amid tensions in Jammu and Punjab
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Aleena Manoj, an MTech student at IIT Jammu, was having dinner with her friends at the hostel canteen around 8.30 pm on May 8 when the lights suddenly went out. During a mock security drill conducted on the campus earlier in the day, the students were informed that there would be a blackout after 10 pm. This was owing to the possibility of a retaliatory strike by Pakistan after India launched Operation Sindoor. But the sudden blackout caught them unawares.
A few hours later, amid the pitch darkness, the students heard heavy firing in the vicinity. They huddled together inside the hostel, fearing the worst. Little were they aware that the air defence system stationed in Jammu was busy shooting down Pakistani drones that came in by the dozens. After a few minutes, the explosions subsided, but a sleepless night lay ahead for the students.
'It was a first-time experience for us. Due to the loud firing, we couldn't sleep anymore. With the curtains drawn up, we were following the latest news updates on our mobile phones' Aleena, who hails from Kasaragod, told TNIE. She added that Pakistan's flagrant act of choosing civilian centres for attacks was shocking and unheard of.

BSF man gets warm welcome on returning from Op Sindoor
Kanpur: The Jindapur Kannauj residence of BSF head constable Brij Mohan Singh Yadav, who was injured in Pakistani shelling and a drone attack during , is bustling with people visiting him to commend his valour. In his conversation with TOI, he indicated that the Indian Army's robust response deterred further Pakistani aggression. Describing the May 10 incident, he told TOI that around 5am, their position at the RS Pura sector of the Jammu international border faced enemy attacks through cross-border shelling and drones. He and his colleagues, including sub inspector Mohd Imtiyaz, took defensive positions. "There were 11 of us, including 7 from the BSF's 7th battalion G company and two Army Riflemen. We managed to shoot down several enemy drones with our machine guns, but suddenly, during the firing, a drone's shell exploded and fell on us. This resulted in the martyrdom of three individuals: BSF's SI Mohd Imtiyaz of Bihar, constable Deepak Chingakham of Manipur, and an Army Rifleman Sunil Kumar of Jammu," he said, adding, "In the same attack, I sustained a jaw injury and was hospitalised. My injury has now healed significantly. Upon returning to my village, I was overwhelmed by the reception I received from Etawah railway station to my village Jindapur." His son Anmol Yadav, a student, says that his mother Girja Devi, sister Khushi and other family members got anxious upon learning about the casualties in his father's unit and his injury on May 10. A subsequent video call from the Command Hospital in Jammu provided some relief. Recalling the recent weeks, Brij Mohan's wife said tearfully, "We couldn't sleep properly until we saw him on the video call. Those days of uncertainty were unbearable." Since his return, the villagers have been visiting him bringing fruits and sweets as tokens of respect. Students and teachers from the nearby govt and private schools also visited him after his return.

Espionage accused YouTuber Jasbir Singh sent to 14-day judicial custody
Mohali (Punjab) [India], June 10 (ANI): YouTuber Jasbir Singh who was arrested on espionage charges, has been sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Mohali court. Jasbir's lawyer, Mohit, on Monday said that Jasbir will stay in custody until June 23. 'He was produced in the court. He has been sent on a 14-day judicial remand. He will stay in judicial remand until June 23. After discussion, we will file a bail application,' Mohit remarked. Jasbir Singh, who ran the YouTube channel 'Jaan Mahal,' is allegedly linked to a terror-backed espionage network involving Pakistani intelligence operative Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa, as per police sources. He is also said to have maintained close contact with Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, previously arrested for spying, and Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani national and expelled Pakistan High Commission official, said the police. On Wednesday, Punjab Police's State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), SAS Nagar has arrested a YouTube influencer for spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav, Information and Public Relations Department, Punjab, in an official statement. Earlier, DGP Gaurav Yadav said that the accused, Jasbir Singh, has been found associated with Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO) Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa, part of a terror-backed espionage network. He also maintained close contact with Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra-- arrested for spying by Haryana Police-- and Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani national and expelled Pakistan High Commission official, as per the statement. He said that investigations have revealed that Jasbir attended the Pakistan National Day event in Delhi on Danish's invitation, where he met Pakistani Army officials and vloggers. The accused has also travelled to Pakistan on three occasions, including in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and came into direct contact with ISI officers, who subsequently cultivated and recruited him to carry out espionage activities within India, he added earlier. The DGP said that after Jyoti Malhotra's arrest, the accused, Jasbir, had attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection. Further investigations are underway to dismantle the broader espionage-terror network and identify all collaborators, he added. (ANI)
