Vietnam to remove death penalty for embezzlement, anti-state crimes

HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam will remove the death penalty for eight offences from next month, including embezzlement and activities aimed at overthrowing the government, state media reported on Wednesday.
The National Assembly, the country's lawmaking body, unanimously ratified the amendment to the Criminal Code earlier on Wednesday to abolish the death penalty for the crimes, the official Vietnam News Agency reported.
Other crimes that will no longer lead to the death penalty include vandalising state property, manufacturing fake medicine, jeopardising peace, triggering invasive wars, espionage and drug trafficking, the report said.
The maximum sentence for these crimes will now be life imprisonment, it said.
Those who were sentenced to death for these offences before July 1 but have not yet been executed will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, the report said.
Ten offences will remain subject to capital punishment in Vietnam, including murder, treason, terrorism and the sexual abuse of children, according to the report.
Capital punishment data is a state secret in Vietnam and it is not known how many people are currently on death row in the country. Lethal injection is the only method of execution after firing squads were abolished in 2011.

MMEA seizes 178 foreign fishing vessels over past three years
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized a total of 178 foreign fishing vessels over the past three years, with 109 of them already disposed of. MMEA director-general Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said Vietnamese vessels accounted for the highest number of seizures, with 84 boats, followed by Indonesia (61), Thailand (30) and China (three). He said the 109 vessels that were disposed of had a combined estimated value of RM1.83 million. "Vietnamese vessels made up the majority of those disposed of, totalling 97, followed by 11 from Indonesia and one from Thailand. "From 2023 to 2025, the MMEA recorded proceeds from auction sales amounting to RM3,752,330.50, while compounds and fines totalled RM84,141,077.80," he said.

Fraud victims among top crypto ATM users, Australian regulator says

A nationwide operation led by the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) examined the most prolific crypto ATM users in each state, and based on the transaction values, identified cases likely linked to scams or fraud. "We suspected that a large volume of crypto ATM transactions were probably illicit, but disturbingly, our law enforcement partners found that almost all of the transactions we referred involved victims rather than criminals," AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas said. In one instance, AUSTRAC identified a woman in her 70s who had deposited more than A$430,000 into crypto ATMs after falling victim to romance and investment scams. Earlier this month, AUSTRAC had placed conditions and limits on crypto ATM providers after flagging compliance concerns, with the number of active machines exceeding 1,800. Lately, the Australian corporate regulator has been cracking down on cryptocurrency exchanges as well, with Binance and Blockchain Global coming under scrutiny.
