HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam will remove the death penalty for eight offences from next month, including embezzlement and activities aimed at overthrowing the government, state media reported on Wednesday.
The National Assembly, the country's lawmaking body, unanimously ratified the amendment to the Criminal Code earlier on Wednesday to abolish the death penalty for the crimes, the official Vietnam News Agency reported.
Other crimes that will no longer lead to the death penalty include vandalising state property, manufacturing fake medicine, jeopardising peace, triggering invasive wars, espionage and drug trafficking, the report said.
The maximum sentence for these crimes will now be life imprisonment, it said.
Those who were sentenced to death for these offences before July 1 but have not yet been executed will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, the report said.
Ten offences will remain subject to capital punishment in Vietnam, including murder, treason, terrorism and the sexual abuse of children, according to the report.
Capital punishment data is a state secret in Vietnam and it is not known how many people are currently on death row in the country. Lethal injection is the only method of execution after firing squads were abolished in 2011.

PAS Leader Uses Malaysian Chinese General's Promotion To Predict Future Malaysian Chinese Prime Minister

Subscribe to our FREE A senior PAS leader has sparked controversy after posting what critics describe as racially divisive content following the historic promotion of Malaysia's first Chinese lieutenant general. In his post, Zaharuddin created a fictional news report set in 2058, depicting a Chinese individual from The fabricated scenario also suggested that the imaginary individual's parents had obtained Malaysian citizenship through the 'It's not impossible that news like this will emerge and be considered neutral in 30 to 40 years from now,' Zaharuddin wrote. The post included a screenshot of actual news coverage about Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng's promotion from major general to lieutenant general in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) – a historic milestone as he becomes the country's first Chinese officer to reach this rank. The post was no longer publicly available at the time of writing. Pas mmg xde ke think tank yg boleh guide dieorg bawak isu2 negara ker??dari atas smpai bawah men isu 3R pas kalah jer mst isu 3R akan dasar2/polisi kerajaan biar kerajaan terus dijalan yg kt raykat gk. Lps tue join la kerajaan.😅😅 — Zul (@Zul4380) DAP MP Condemns 'Divisive' Rhetoric When questioned about the connection, Zaharuddin insisted the news screenshot was 'merely decorative' and bore 'no connection with the news above.' The Melaka-born Lim's promotion has been viewed by many as a significant step forward for diversity in Malaysia's military leadership. DAP's Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan strongly criticised the post, describing it as an attempt to sow racial discord. 'What is wrong with a Chinese Malaysian being promoted to lieutenant general in the armed forces? Isn't he also a child of Malaysia?' Syahredzan said in his Facebook response. The MP argued that Lim's achievement should be celebrated as a source of national pride, demonstrating the value of Malaysia's diversity. Unfortunately, it has been transformed into a divisive talking point that will only further fragment our society. This kind of politics and rhetoric must have no place in the Malaysia we cherish. Fraud victims among top crypto ATM users, Australian regulator says

A representation of cryptocurrency Bitcoin is seen in this illustration taken August 6, 2021. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration (Reuters) -Australia's financial crimes monitoring agency said on Wednesday that it has identified 90 scam victims, money mules and suspected offenders as the top crypto ATM users in the country, amid efforts to address crimes enabled by digital currency. A nationwide operation led by the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) examined the most prolific crypto ATM users in each state, and based on the transaction values, identified cases likely linked to scams or fraud. "We suspected that a large volume of crypto ATM transactions were probably illicit, but disturbingly, our law enforcement partners found that almost all of the transactions we referred involved victims rather than criminals," AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas said. In one instance, AUSTRAC identified a woman in her 70s who had deposited more than A$430,000 into crypto ATMs after falling victim to romance and investment scams. Earlier this month, AUSTRAC had placed conditions and limits on crypto ATM providers after flagging compliance concerns, with the number of active machines exceeding 1,800. Lately, the Australian corporate regulator has been cracking down on cryptocurrency exchanges as well, with Binance and Blockchain Global coming under scrutiny.
