#AViewFrom Henkel North America: Mentor, OH
Did you know that Henkel North America employs approximately 8,000 employees in more than 70 sites across the U.S. and Canada? Collectively, these sites support two business units: Adhesive Technologies and Consumer Brands.
Our #AViewFrom series features select locations, sharing information and facts about our sites across Henkel North America.
Tightly sealed windows, flooring that stays put, and element-resistant siding that looks beautiful are all made possible with the sealants and adhesives produced at Henkel Adhesives Technologies' Mentor, Ohio facility. This is a site on the move, running seven days a week, powered by a dedicated team working to manufacture the products construction pros and do-it-yourselfers depend on. Learn more in this #AViewFrom segment.
Near the shores of Lake Erie, one of the United States' Great lakes, sits Henkel's 196,000 sq. ft. Mentor, OH site, where about 140 employees manufacture construction adhesives and sealants for the company's Consumers & Craftsmen (ACC) business. Marketed under the LOCTITE®, OSI®, and LEPAGE® brands, among others, this facility produces over 44 million cartridges of solvent-free and solvent-based adhesives and sealants annually to support North American professional and retail customers. The products are used for various kitchen and bath, window, door, flooring, and siding applications and are essential for preventing air and moisture ingress, securing flooring materials, and protecting against water damage on exterior siding.
'Our operation is highly complex and requires extreme precision,' explains Plant Operations Director Joseph Perdue. 'Unlike facilities serving industrial customers, where the material is filled into large drums, we produce point-of-sale cartridges in more than 20 different bulk formulations for 5 different brands. Consumers expect each 9.5 oz-tube of material to look and perform the same – every time.'
Our team of operators, quality control professionals, maintenance and engineering specialists, and product development experts are dedicated to making sure every formulation is mixed, filled, and packaged to exacting standards and that product consistency is bar none. Our exceptional reputation depends on it.
Joseph Perdue, Plant Operations Director
Like its water-based sealant and adhesives sister plant in LaGrange, GA, the Mentor, OH site has been in existence since 1984 and joined the Henkel manufacturing footprint in the early 2000s following the company's acquisition of OSI Sealants. The high-volume operation runs 24 hours a day Monday through Friday, with partial weekend production as well. Mentor was recognized in 2013 as Henkel's best global plant and, in 2019, was the recipient of significant capital investment to upgrade equipment and drive manufacturing efficiency. This year, two new high-speed filling lines were installed, helping to increase capacity, and freeing valuable resources for high-changeover production, such as Mentor's color-matched sealant lines.
Protecting natural resources is a hallmark of the Henkel Mentor plant, which is a carbon-neutral operation and a zero-waste-to-landfill site. No water is used in production processes here, and the team strives to significantly reduce manufacturing waste. With its color-matched line, for example, changing over the sealant colors means the first several tubes post-changeover will result in a mixture of the previous color and the new color. Instead of scrapping this material, the company sells its 'rainbow caulk' at a reduced price compared to its color-specific varieties. For applications where the sealant will not be visible, this is a perfect solution for waste reduction and consumer cost savings.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Mentor facility manufactures products that are specifically designed to color match various construction and design materials such as paints, windows and doors. More specifically, the plant produces hundreds of color-matched OSI® brand sealants for color-coded products made by well-known construction material and supply manufacturers with a Color ID system to help find the perfect color match.
The Mentor plant's color matching capability and Color ID system gives customers and consumers options to match to existing building materials and supplies from well-known suppliers.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTEngagement with the local community is central to Mentor's success and demonstrates its commitment to supporting area initiatives. Recently, the plant's focus has been to create awareness of the types of jobs available at the manufacturing facility and in various support functions. In September, a team of employees attended a career fair at the Case Western Reserve University to promote Henkel jobs and internships. In October, as part of the Mentor plant's Manufacturing Day activities, employees participated in the local high school's 'Think Manufacturing' career fair where Senior Manufacturing Engineer Scott Schwickerath, Administrative Assistant Amia Martorana, and Packaging Operator Katy Shaffer, connected with students to discuss the variety of career opportunities at Henkel. The Gen Z crowd was all ears and had plenty of questions. Hopefully, some of them are inspired to take the next step!
CULTURE AND CAREER'Opportunity is everywhere at this site,' shares Amia Martorana, who worked as a machine operator for two years before becoming the administrative assistant.
If you want to learn, if you're curious, and have a passion for the business, there are multiple avenues for advancement. And management's support is extraordinary. I'm also a college student and appreciate being able to simultaneously pursue two goals – education and professional development.
Amia Martorana, Site Administrator
Recognizing and valuing employees has been vital to building Mentor's unique culture.
When you operate a multi-shift site, traditional all-staff events are difficult to organize. Instead, we do shift-specific appreciation events like summer cookouts and holiday parties, which occur between shifts so that everyone can participate.

Huge auto parts company files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Auto parts aftermarket companies have faced a series of economic issues that have reduced their revenue over the last two years. Rising inflation, increased interest rates, and consumers who are cautious with discretionary spending have affected their profits. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter A major headwind on the industry since 2023 has been the declining consumer interest in electric vehicles. As inflation and high interest rates raised the prices of EVs, fuel costs for internal combustion vehicles plummeted. Related: Major auto parts company considers filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy It began to make more economic sense for consumers to buy ICE vehicles that were less expensive and more convenient to refuel at gas stations, instead of searching for an EV charger to recharge their battery. Tesla has become the poster child for declining EV sales as the electric vehicle maker's sales in April declined in its top three markets - U.S., China, and Europe - after suffering a 13% year-over-year delivery decline in the first quarter of 2025, according to Morningstar data. All of these economic issues have led auto parts suppliers to close stores and sometimes file for bankruptcy. Wheel Pros, which operates as auto parts distributor and retailer Hoonigan, filed for a prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sept. 9, 2024, with plans to hand 85% of its new equity interests to holders of first-lien claims and 15% to new first-lien lenders who will backstop the debtor's exit term loan. Accuride Corp., another top manufacturer of wheels and wheel end products for commercial trucks and trailers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Oct. 9, 2024, seeking a consensual restructuring of its debt to continue operating as a going concern. Some auto parts suppliers closed stores but didn't need to file for bankruptcy. Struggling auto parts retailer Advance Auto Parts, with nearly 5,000 retail stores, accelerated its strategic turnaround plan to close 727 corporate-owned and independent locations, as well as four West Coast distribution centers, by the end of March 2025. And now, a major auto parts supplier has filed for bankruptcy. Global auto parts giant Marelli Holdings Co., which is owned by KKR, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with a prearranged restructuring agreement to wipe out billions of dollars of debt and hand ownership of the company to its senior lenders. Related: Popular trucking auto parts chain closing, no bankruptcy yet The auto parts company, whose headquarters are located in Saitama, Japan, with North American headquarters in Southfield, Mich., listed $4.9 billion in total funded debt in its filing on June 11, which included a $350 million emergency loan facility, provided by Development Bank of Japan and Mizuho Bank, according to a declaration from CEO David Slump. The emergency loan is senior to a $4.55 billion senior loan facility, led by Mizuho as agent. The debtor listed $1 billion to $10 billion in assets and liabilities in its petition. Its largest unsecured creditors include Stellantis, owed over $453 million; Nissan, owed over $313 million; Bosch Group, owed over $45 million; and Mazda, owed over $30 million. The debtor reached a restructuring support agreement with 80% of its senior secured lenders after a year of negotiations. More bankruptcy: Iconic auto repair chain franchise files Chapter 11 bankruptcyPopular beer brand closes down and files Chapter 7 bankruptcyPopular vodka and gin brand files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy The agreement calls for a $1.1 billion new money debtor-in-possession financing provided by members of the debtor's Ad Hoc Group of senior lenders, a 47.5% rollup of senior loan claims, repayment of the $350 million emergency loan in cash, an 11% cashout of senior loan claims held by Japanese lenders, a reinstatement or payment in full of all general unsecured claims, and conversion of a portion of the DIP facility into 100% of the equity of the reorganized company. The debtor seeks a reorganization plan confirmation order within 180 days, according to the declaration. Marelli blamed several prepetition challenges that forced the company to file for bankruptcy, including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and post-pandemic market challenges and headwinds. Among the economic issues were supply chain challenges of labor shortages, disruptions, and high costs; high inflation and rising prices of raw materials; and declining customer volumes. The company also blamed a decrease in customer demand for electric vehicles in 2023, due to a combination of high inflation and lower fuel costs for internal combustion engine vehicles, which shifted the cost and benefits of buying an EV. The decreased interest in EVs triggered a rapid volume reduction beginning in May 2024 as automakers who had a surplus of EV inventory no longer had an immediate need for Marelli's components, leading to a decline in revenue in 2024 compared to 2023. The company also dealt with liquidity issues, and $150 million in annual interest payments put pressure on the debtor's cash flow. Costco is exploring options to make membership more valuable, CEO says
Costco shoppers may soon be getting more bang for their buck. Three months after the retailer extended hours at its North American gas stations, CEO Ron Vachris has said the wholesale club is reviewing the possibility of keeping its stores open longer as well. Vachris said on the company's May 29 earnings call that customer response to the gas station changes has been exceedingly positive. "The combination of expanded gas station hours, new gas station openings and lower prices at the pump have led us to having two of our all-time highest gallon weeks in the U.S. during the last month," Vachris said. As a result, the chain is looking into giving customers the opportunity to spend more time and money inside its stores. "We continue to look at the operations side of things as well," he said. "The warehouse hours." Business Insider reported this week that beginning at the end of the month, Costco will begin allowing members who pay for its $130 Executive Membership into stores an hour earlier than regular $65 Gold Star members. "Our Executive Members are our most loyal members, and we want to reward them for their commitment to Costco," an internal email cited by Business Insider reads. Indeed, Executive Members make up 73% of Costco's sales despite representing only 37.6 million of the company's 79.6 million memberships, according to Costco data. Costco did not respond when reached for comment by CNBC Make It. The main selling point of the Executive Membership is the 2% cash back reward given on every dollar spent at Costco. If you're a Gold Star member thinking about upgrading, you'd need to spend at least $3,250 per year for the membership to start to be worthwhile. Anything below that, and you'll end up spending more money overall with the higher annual fee. The Executive membership also offers additional savings on Costco services like their bottled water delivery and pet insurance. If you buy your home or auto insurance through Costco, the Executive membership will get you some exclusive benefits such as roadside and lockout assistance. If you're on the cusp of a $3,250 annual spend but also use those services, it might make the membership worthwhile. Costco promises to refund the difference in cost between a Gold Star membership and an Executive membership in your first year if you aren't satisfied.
