Man killed by stray weight at Colorado track and field meet remembered as dedicated husband, dad
A spectator killed by an errant weight in a hammer throw event at a youth track and field meet was a dedicated father and husband with a great sense of humor, relatives said.
The accident Sunday at the Colorado United Track Club meet at the University of Colorado's Colorado Springs campus killed Wade Langston, 57, of Colorado Springs, the El Paso County coroner's office said Tuesday.
'He was a truly wonderful person who brought laughter to every room he entered,' wrote niece-in-law Tamara Rocha for a GoFundMe effort that had raised over $7,500.
The funds will help Langston's son, a high school senior, with college tuition, according to the post.
The weight cleared 'certified barriers' before striking Langston in a fieldhouse at the University of Colorado's Colorado Springs campus, according to a university statement.
Firefighters pronounced Langston dead at the scene. Witnesses reported Langston trying to shield his wife and son from the incoming weight.
University officials didn't respond Tuesday when asked whether possible factors in the accident, including who set up the barriers and how, were being investigated.
The so-called hammer in the hammer throw event is actually a ball on a chain. The ball weighs 16 pounds (7 kilograms) for men and 9 pounds (4 kilograms) for women in adult competition, according to World Athletics, the international track and field governing body.
Athletes spin in a circle to gain momentum before releasing the weight to throw as far as they can.
Another GoFundMe effort for Langston's family started by Colorado United Track Club coach Erik Huffman had raised over $10,500 for Langston's family.
The family had no further comment besides its statement, Rocha said by email. A message left for Huffman through his GoFundMe page wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.
Fatal accidents at track and field competitions are rare but not unheard of. A shot-put ball struck and killed an officiant during practice at the U.S. track and field championships in Los Angeles in 2005.
A hammer killed a student at a college track and field meet at Wheaton College in Illinois in 2017.

A former Terre Haute resident lost her life in Columbia, Tenn. May 31 after a violent attack in her neighborhood that left two people dead and another injured. Stacie Lynn Malone Wright, 51, who graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo High School and Indiana State University, was one of two people killed in the attack; the other individual who died, John Bidle, was a neighbor. The suspected gunman, Byron Childers, 41, lived just a few houses down from the victims, according to NewsChannel5 in Nashville. ESPN Confirms Deion Sanders Is Dealing With Health Issue
Deion Sanders is currently away from the University of Colorado program while dealing with an illness. USA TODAY reported Monday that Sanders has been sidelined at his estate in Texas with "an unspecified health issue" as Colorado's annual football camps got underway in Boulder. ESPN's Heather Dinich confirmed as much Tuesday morning. A timetable for the 57-year-old Sanders' return is unknown, Dinich said. On Sunday, Deion Sanders Jr., the coach's eldest son, said on a YouTube livestream that his dad was "feeling well." ‘Disturbing': Clover community wants answers, justice after hit-and-run that killed father
A town in South Carolina is mourning the tragic loss of a father killed by a driver who didn't stop to help. It happened over the weekend near a Shell gas station along Highway 55 in Clover. Channel 9's Tina Terry asked police about the investigation, but they still haven't found the driver. Now, they're asking for the community's help. Police say the victim, Anthony Parker, was walking with his bike on the shoulder of Highway 55 when the car hit him and kept going. 'That is disturbing. You know for somebody to hit somebody and keep going. Don't see how they can live with themselves,' Ron Penley, a neighbor, said. Neighbors in Clover were disappointed that a driver hit 31-year-old Anthony Raheem Parker Sunday morning and just kept going. 'I think it's terrible, I do,' said another neighbor, Marybeth Adams. The South Carolina State Highway Patrol said Parker was likely hit from behind. Troopers don't know the make or the model of the car involved, but they say it may have damage to the front or the passenger side of the vehicle. 'You would think if somebody saw something like that, they'd report it,' Penley said. A GoFundMe page set up for Parker says he left behind a 3-year-old daughter. His loss is devastating family members, and people in the community are hoping they'll get answers soon. 'I hope they get justice, I really do. They need justice, they need something,' Adams said. The family is raising money to help with funeral expenses.
