Six car brands recalled for safety flaws, including VW Polos
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed the recall of several car models in South Africa due to dangerous safety defects. Volkswagen Polo Sedans are among the affected vehicles. Stellantis South Africa is pulling Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300c models manufactured between 2014 and 2016 because of faulty Takata airbags.
'The passenger airbag inflator may rupture during normal airbag deployment events due to excessive internal pressure,' said Stellantis.
In such cases, 'metal fragments could strike vehicle occupants, potentially causing serious injury or death.'
Citroën models C4, DS4, and DS5 built from 2009 to 2016 face a similar risk.
'There is a potential for metal fragments to detach and strike occupants,' confirmed NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba.
'This could lead to severe injuries or fatalities.'
Mercedes-Benz is recalling CLA and S-Class models over defective brake hoses. The CLA's rear axle hoses may wear down and leak, while S-Class vehicles produced from 2020 to 2023 may experience leaks in hot and humid conditions. The company warned that in both cases, braking performance is at risk.
Audi South Africa has identified a major fire hazard in its high-voltage battery packs. Forty-six Audi e-tron GT units are being recalled due to 'irregularities in some cell modules,' which could cause overheating. 'The battery may overheat and pose an acute fire hazard,' the manufacturer warned.
'This could result in severe or fatal injuries and significant property damage.'
Volvo has also joined the car recall list. Twenty-seven XC90 vehicles (model years 2020–2022) face overheating battery risks. According to Volvo, 'the risk, in worst-case scenarios, is a thermal event — essentially a fire hazard.'
Volkswagen of South Africa has recalled 905 Polo Sedans sold from 2 April 2025 due to defective rear seatbelt latch plates.
The company admitted, 'There may be a reduced protective effect during a crash, which increases the risk of injury for passengers.'
Acting NCC Commissioner Thezi Mabuza urged affected drivers to act immediately.
'These defects are not minor — they present life-threatening risks. Consumer safety is non-negotiable,' she said.
All repairs or part replacements will be done free of charge.
'This is a clear reminder of why product recalls matter,' added Mabuza.
'The cost of ignoring them could be far greater than just a trip to the dealership.'

Why the Volvo EX90 is the definitive eco-warrior SUV
Safety remains the cornerstone and the Lidar sensor scans the surroundings on the move, picking out cars, lanes and other objects in the EX90's proximity. All that's needed is to keep your hands on the wheel at all times and it will self-throttle, brake and turn into curves proficiently. The system is let down only by municipal ineptness where road markings have faded and deactivates quickly and warns the driver to take the reins. Foibles? Putting all major controls into a single digital hub will not be to everyone's liking, but I'm all for it. The digital key, which the car senses on approach, is too small, though, and easy to lose. Apart from this, the car didn't put a foot wrong for me. The closest rivals to this luxury electric Volvo are the BMW iX 50 and Mercedes-Benz EQS 450. While the BMW looks the part and is priced marginally lower than the Volvo's R2,650,00, it doesn't accommodate seven people. The Mercedes is R82,000 more expensive and can be optioned with seven seats. Having tested all three, it's the Volvo EX90 that's coming home with me for its blend of luxury, style, functionality and Lidar sensors. It's sold as standard with a five-year/100,000km warranty and a three-year/60,000km maintenance plan.

Top 5 vehicle exporters for May 2025
While the new car market saw some positive growth, South African vehicle exports for May 2025 saw a considerable dip. Here is a look at the Top 5 for the month. Looking for a new or used vehicle? Find it here with CARmag! The SARB cut the interest rate by 25 basis points, and while Naamsa mentions this is expected to enhance credit affordability and reduce capital costs across the board, it holds particular significance for vehicle exporters. Lower interest rates reduce borrowing costs for manufacturers investing in tooling upgrades, retooling for new model production, and scaling export operations. With inflation easing to 2.8% and the Rand gaining strength, the environment is more conducive to attracting capital into export-oriented manufacturing. Related: Top 5 Vehicle Exporters — March 2025 However, declining figures in May 2025 don't reflect the full picture. Vehicle exports fell by 5 165 units, or 14.6%, to 30 112 units compared to the 35 277 units exported in May 2024. Despite the monthly decline, year-to-date exports remained 1.4% ahead of the same period last year. According to Naamsa, this drop was partly due to major OEM Volkswagen halting production from mid-April to mid-May to complete critical upgrades for a forthcoming model, the Tera SUV. In line with the National Budget 3.0's emphasis on fiscal consolidation, the SARB's policy action illustrates that price stability and export-led growth can co-exist. Discussions around potentially lowering the official inflation target from 4.5% to 3.0% offer longer-term hope for structurally lower interest rates, transformative for manufacturers seeking to remain competitive on global stages. Top 5 exporters for May 2025 Ford – 6 963 (+ 471 units) Mercedes-Benz SA – 6 600 (- 0 units) BMW – 5 700 (+ 500 units) Toyota – 5 566 (- 1 833 units) Volkswagen – 4 305 (- 1 026 units) The month of May 2025 saw a shuffle for the Top 5 and while none have fallen off of the list from the previous month, it was Ford that led South Africa's vehicle export market with 6 963 units, marking a notable increase of 471 units compared to April. German automaker Mercedes-Benz kept output at a steady 6 600 for the month and BMW's Rosslyn plant outputted 5 700 exports which represents a 500 unit rise from April. In contrast, Toyota experienced a decline, with exports falling by 1833 units to 5 566. As mentioned prior, retooling in Kariega saw Volkswagen drop 1 026 units, ending the month at 4 305 exports. These cars were made available nationally from 2010 to 2018. Consumers are required to visit their nearest authorised dealership for the repair or replacement of the affected airbag. Recall of Goldwing Motorcycles The Commission said Honda Motor Southern Africa is recalling certain Goldwing motorcycle models due to a broken primary drive gear tightening bolt.
