
Tamil Nadu's women in blue make a beeline for greener pastures: Lured by higher pay, professional growth, and better work conditions, the best nurses are leaving
Shyama R, a nurse at a corporate hospital in Chennai, is busy preparing her documents for a job in the UK. It's a decision many of her colleagues are also considering, she says. "We stay in a hostel, get food, but after sending money home, there's barely anything left for ourselves," says Shyama, who adds that her salary of 15,000 a month isn't enough to provide financial stability. "My senior colleague, who's been working here for years, isn't making enough to live comfortably either," she adds.While their counterparts in countries such as the UK can earn between 2 lakh and 4 lakh a month, those in Tamil Nadu are often stuck earning just 15,000 to 25,000. Those in rural areas are paid as little as 7,000 to 10,000 a month. For a skilled nurse with 10 years of experience, the average salary in Indian cities is 40,000.Drawn by huge pay incentives, aggressive recruitment drives, and immigration fast-tracks, many skilled nurses are leaving Tamil Nadu. Between January and April, more than 500 nurses from across the state collected good standing or foreign verification certificates from the state nursing council, so they could travel abroad for work.The exodus is posing a challenge to healthcare resources in the state, says Tamil Nadu Nursing Council Registrar S Ani Grace Kalaimathi. In 2020, the council gave 1,432 certificates – 601 foreign verification and 831 good standing certificates – to nurses who were seeking jobs abroad. The next year, when there was a nursing shortage during the Covid-19 pandemic, the council gave more than 4,000 certificates. The trend continued until 2023, when the council issued more than 5,000 such certificates.Beyond financial incentives, nurses are drawn by the promise of greater professional autonomy and more regulated, supportive working environments. Shyama and two of her friends have been getting information from their college seniors employed in the UK and other European countries. "The rules are stringent, but the scope of practice is broader. Hospitals allow nurses to make independent decisions and manage patient care within established protocols. People working there are trained better and are far more confident. They don't just write doctor's notes, administer IV, change beds, and diapers for patients," says Shyama's friend Thendralarasi E, who is also set to go to the UK. "Our seniors assist some of the most renowned surgeons in the best hospitals in the world."Another attraction to most young nurses is the clear pathways developed nations offer to permanent residency and the ability to migrate with families, providing long-term security. "With the shortage of more than 30,000 nurses, countries such as the UK have relaxed testing norms for nurses since the Covid-19 pandemic," says N J Gowrishankar of Hxplain, a company that offers continuing education for nurses.Unlike in earlier times, when nurses had several levels of testing to be eligible for employment, the UK now accepts nurses as assistants once they pass the basic test. "All they need for this is a refresher course in clinicals and training in soft skills. When they join hospitals there, they are trained on the job. After a few months, they clear competency tests, mostly practicals, for various nursing positions," he says.At the nursing council, too, officials have noted an increase in the trend of nurses going to the UK and other European countries. Earlier, the popular choice was the Middle East. Now, however, the council has recorded an increase in the number of nurses applying for jobs in Europe. Nurses say it is because it gives them the opportunity for professional development, exposure to international healthcare protocols, and advanced practice techniques, coupled with the global recognition for competence and adaptability.While academicians say it is important for specialised training, professional nursing bodies have been pushing for more govt nursing colleges in the state, which will offer quality education at an affordable price. As per World Health Organization standards, Tamil Nadu is short of at least 65,000 nurses to achieve three nurses per 1,000 population. The state, which has 1.74 lakh nurses, has two nurses per 1,000 population. Colleges in districts such as Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Thirupattur, and Ariyalur, where no nursing colleges exist, can help bridge the rural-urban gap. "Our nurses need training in soft skills, better salaries, and a more professional environment," says Ani Grace Kalaimathi. Delhi HC sets aside appointment of NCISMC chairperson
The Delhi High Court on Friday (June 6, 2025) quashed the appointment of Vaidya Jayant Yeshwant Deopujari as Chairperson of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, holding that he does not meet the qualification prescribed for appointment to the office. The court passed the order on two petitions filed by Ved Prakash Tyagi, former president of the erstwhile Central Council for Indian Medicine, and Dr. Raghunandan Sharma challenging the appointment of Mr. Deopujari as the chairperson of the commission (NCISMC). The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions had issued a circular on June 9, 2021, appointing Mr. Deopujari as the commission's chairperson. The petitioners have alleged that Mr. Deopujari could not be appointed as the chairperson of the commission as he does not hold a postgraduate degree, mandated under the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020 (NCISM Act). The court held that Mr. Deopujari possessed a PhD degree, whereas the requisite degree was an MD or any other equivalent master's degree in any discipline of the Indian System of Medicine. The PhD degree that was awarded to him by Pune University did not presuppose acquisition of a lower qualification (Master's Degree in Ayurveda), it said. Ineligible person 'We have no hesitation to hold that the expression 'Post-Graduate Degree' occurring in Section 4(2) of the NCISM Act, 2020, in the context it has been used, would mean a Master's Degree (MD) in any discipline of Indian System of Medicine, which the respondent does not possess, and, therefore, he lacks the requisite qualification for being appointed to the office in question,' the court said. Mr. Tyagi's plea said the commission was a governing body for all matters relating to education and regulation of Indian medicine in the country. 'Thus, the interests of a large number of people/students/Indian medicine practitioners shall be adversely and severely affected if an ineligible person is allowed to continue as the chairperson of such a critical statutory body,' he added. The court noted that the counsel representing the Commission has stated in the court that the process of selection and appointment of the Chairperson of the Commission has commenced. 'Accordingly, we direct that the said process shall be completed with expedition, and while conducting the process of selection, the observations made hereinabove in this judgment shall be taken into account,' the court added.

Wheelchair Cricketer Dies On Train, Teammates Blame Railways Officials
Vikram Singh, a wheelchair cricketer from Punjab, died of a cardiac arrest while travelling from Ludhiana to Gwalior on a train. According to the officials, Vikram, 39, died near the Mathura Junction on Wednesday morning. He was going to Gwalior to compete in the seventh Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Memorial T-10 Championship, scheduled to be held from June 5. Somjeet Singh Gaur. Vikram had complained of uneasiness when the train was crossing Delhi. However, his health deteriorated and was later declared dead by authorities upon arrival at the Mathura Junction. Vikram's teammates had contacted the Railways GRP for help, but the matter was allegedly not taken seriously by the officials. The train was delayed by around 90 minutes when it arrived in Mathura. "Vikram started playing wheelchair cricket in Ludhiana 8-9 years ago and would practice on his own and bear all expenses through whatever means he could get. Last year, he played an important role in the Punjab team winning the title in the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Memorial T-10 Championship. He was excited about playing in this edition too. When our train was crossing Delhi, he complained of a severe headache and was sweating profusely. We informed the Railways GRP personnel on the train. They told us that doctors would be available at Mathura station. Vikram slept. Later, the train waited for over an hour ahead of Mathura station and we lost Vikram. We informed his family and they will reach here soon to take his body back home. We are also returning to Punjab," he told The Indian Express. The incident sparked widespread outrage, with several rights group for specially-abled people questioning Railways for ignoring the matter. Vikram hailed from Pohir village near Ahmedgarh of Punjab's Malerkotla district. He also got a call up to represent India's wheelchair team in 2020 during a series against Bangladesh. However, the series was cancelled due to Covid-19.

Covid-19 Cases in India, June 6: The number of active Covid-19 cases has crossed the 5,000 mark in India as the country continued to see a steady surge of infections over the past few weeks. India's active Covid case tally crossed the 5,000 mark with the country reporting 498 new cases over the past 24 hours, data from the Union Ministry of Health showed on Friday, June 6. The number of Covid-19 patients who have been discharged over the past 24 hours were recorded at 764. A total of four people died over the past 24 hours, as per data. Two deaths were reported from Kerala, while Punjab and Karnataka reported one death each. All four patients were above 60 years of age and had co-morbidities. Since January this year, 55 deaths have been reported in the country. Kerala has the most number of active Covid-19 cases in the country at 1,679, followed by Gujarat at 615, West Bengal at 596 and Delhi at 592. Kerala reported the most number of Covid-19 cases at 192, with Gujarat coming at the second place with 107 cases. Delhi reported 30 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, while 124 people were discharged from hospitals. The number of fatalities since January 1 stands at seven, with no fresh deaths recorded since Thursday. In West Bengal, as many as 58 people tested positive for coronavirus over the past 24 hours, officials said. During the same period, 91 recovered from the Covid-19 contagion, while one death has been reported since the beginning of the year. Seven more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Odisha, taking the total number of infections in the current wave to 30, a senior health officer said on Friday. State public health director Nilakantha Mishra said seven have recovered from the disease so far. Amid the Covid-19 spike, the Odisha government has said that schools across the state will function adhering to preventive measures when they reopen after the ongoing summer vacation. In Gwalior, two junior doctors – one male and one female – have tested positive for Covid-19, officials said. Both doctors, postgraduate students at Gajra Raja Medical College, have been placed in home isolation. Meanwhile, experts have assured that Covid-19 cases have grown milder over time while also noting that an occasional surge in cases is expected. This is because the coronavirus has now become endemic and constantly evolving. 'With every passing year, Covid-19 is causing milder infections. It is (now) just another respiratory illness and less dangerous than flu. We can forget Covid-19 as a special case. It is not a cause of concern,' global health expert Dr Chandrakant Lahariya told PTI. A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS) with representatives of Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and Central Government Hospitals in Delhi and with representatives from all states and UTs to evaluate the current COVID-19 situation and preparedness measures.
