
Don't miss young playwright's 'real deal' original script as Water Colour heads to St Andrews
There will be few plays seen on a Scottish stage this year that hit as powerfully as Water Colour, let alone any written by a 21-year-old.
The winner of the St Andrews Playwriting Award 2024, by young Glaswegian writer Milly Sweeney, is about two young people whose chance late-night meeting on a bridge over the River Clyde as one of them contemplates suicide changes both their lives in different ways.
Molly Geddes is Esme, a student at Glasgow College of Art, whose dream studies are disrupted by a crippling anxiety that her classmates are mocking her and her tutor looks down on her.
Friendless and paralysed by her fear, she dreads the thought of her high school reunion.
Meanwhile Ryan J Mackay (whose past work includes Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the West End and the National Theatre of Scotland's Kidnapped) is Harris.
He is over-the-moon to get his dream job in a top Glasgow kitchen, but becomes eventually beaten down by overwork and visions of Esme in the brief moment he met her at her worst.
The fact it's a brand new co-production between Pitlochry Festival Theatre and the Byre Theatre in St Andrews, two of the best theatres in the area.
It's also technically the first play of Pitlochry's always-exciting summer season, although this year's was programmed before new artistic director Alan Cumming took over.
Director Sally Reid (a hit as an actor in Pitlochry's Shirley Valentine and in Scot Squad on the BBC) will rightly draw people in too.
She did a great job of Dundee Rep's hit Jim McLean bioplay Smile.
And here she's on to another winner, directing her two immensely talented young leads with lots of heart and energy, not to mention really landing the funny lines.
Quite simply, Sweeney's script is the real deal.
A perfect insight into the trials of youth and young adulthood, it's truthful, funny and beautifully observed.
Plus the perfect structure ebbs and flows as each character's fate plays out like a reverse image of the other.
There's really no reason to avoid this wonderful play and every reason to see it if you can.
But for those who appreciate trigger warnings, it does very realistically depict two characters in the throes of mental breakdown.

Doctor Who icon favourite to play Lucius in controversial Harry Potter show
The Muggle world has been set alight with rumours and fan favourite picks for who could play who in the upcoming TV adaptation of Harry Potter. HBO has already selected three young actors from the sorting hat to play Harry, Hermione and Ron, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout now on the precipice of international fame. They will be joined in the wizarding world by John Lithgow as headmaster Albus Dumbledore, I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The casting news has been met with a mixed reception, given how contentious JK Rowling has become in recent years amid her anti-trans views. A number of actors have ruled themselves out entirely. There are still several key players from Hogwarts who have yet to be cast – with the cruel Lucius Malfoy among them. Take one look at Matt Smith in House of the Dragon and you'll think 'Now who does this hair remind me of…?' Between that and his fiery yellow mohawk in Darren Aronofsky's new film, Smith has proven he's willing to put the hair transformation work in to get the results on screen. But would he be any good as the Death Eater? His wolfish part in House of the Dragon would suggest he could – but it's hard to argue with some of the other (perhaps better) names in play here. The 42-year-old is currently top of a bookmaker's list of favourites to take on the character from Jason Isaacs' portrayal in the films, sitting with 6/4 odds. However, he's closely followed by Potter alum Tom Felton, who played Lucius's similarly peroxide blonde son Draco, and has 13/8 odds to reprise a Malfoy role in the TV show, according to Unlike his co-stars from the original films, Felton has not completely disavowed JK Rowling over her anti-trans views. Instead, he acknowledged the author was responsible for the franchise while also saying he is 'pro-human rights across the board' in an interview with The Independent. The next person in the list might have something of an edge, because not only do they have Isaacs' approval, but several Oscars on at home to boot. Isaacs said the Death Eater should be played by Meryl Streep, telling Variety: 'She can do anything, that woman. There's literally no limit to what she can do.' Who would make the best Lucius Malfoy? Plus, we know Streep has a villainous role in her arsenal after her terrifying turn as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, with 2/1 odds for the role. More Trending Isaacs was also asked if he had any advice for whoever is next to take on the role and questioned whether he needs to bother offering pearls of wisdom. 'I know some of the people they're casting already,' he said. 'They're brilliant actors. It's going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me.' There's every possibility Lucius won't be cast anytime soon, as the character doesn't appear in the first film. Review, When Bruce Springsteen Came to Britain, BBC2
**** Tony wasn't happy. 'Where the **** have you been? You're late.' 'Highway was jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive,' said Christopher. 'Aw you're gonna get ****ing cute now?' It's a measure of Springsteen's fame that he needs no introduction, whether he's being quoted in The Sopranos, earning Trump's ire on social media ('This dried-out prune of a rocker ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT'), or having a night devoted to him on BBC2, of which this documentary was the highlight. Springsteen's first visit to Britain, or 'the land of our gods and saviours' as the Beatles/Stones/Animals worshipper put it, was in 1975 to play the Hammersmith Odeon. The audience loved him but Springsteen thought he had been terrible. 'I had PTSD from it,' he joked. He couldn't bear to watch the film (shown as part of the night) for 30 years. After that it was all gravy for Springsteen, and the documentary in general, as we heard from the man himself, plus friend and bandmate Steven Van Zandt, fans (celebrity and otherwise) and journalists. Among the celebrities, Rob Brydon's devotion was writ large in a teenage scrapbook. Growing up near Port Talbot, Springsteen said more to him than The Jam singing about the Tube. Sting described his mate Bruce as 'a whirling dervish of benevolent male energy'. Tony Parsons said Britain needed Bruce as an antidote to the New Romantics. The 'ordinary' fans shone brightest, including Hazel Wilkinson, who danced with Bruce onstage at the Manchester Apollo; the striking miners' wives handed a cheque for £20,000 in Newcastle; and the nine-year-old lad who sang Hungry Heart with the Boss in Coventry. And what of the gigs in Scotland? We saw a ticket stub from the Edinburgh stop on the 1980-81 River tour, and Ravenscraig appeared in a miners' strike montage, but that seemed to be it. What, no Hampden, no Murrayfield? No excerpts from the glowing reviews in The Herald and other papers, or interviews with those who were there? Even the briefest of searches would have struck research gold. It was the same for Wales and Northern Ireland. Springsteen and young fan at Hampden. Perhaps stuff hit the cutting room floor. Every concert can't be shown and maybe it was enough for some viewers to run a caption saying 'over 60' shows have been played in Britain since Bruce and The E Street Band got back together. Plus fans, Scottish or otherwise, go where they can get tickets. My two cents: if you make a film titled When Bruce Springsteen Came to Britain - part of a series that includes Bob Marley, Blondie and ABBA - it seems only right to cover all parts of Britain. It was an odd omission in an otherwise terrific hour that left no doubt about Springsteen's love for his UK fans and vice versa. He didn't need a fellowship of the Ivors Academy to prove he's always welcome here, but great that he got it, and from a Beatle as well. Now about that honorary knighthood …
