After a tumultuous season filled with questionable decisions and fan discontent, the Dallas Mavericks defied the odds and won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery.
Dallas will have the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, scheduled to take place at the Barclays Center in New York City on June 25. This presents the Mavericks with the opportunity to draft Cooper Flagg, a standout freshman from Duke University.
This marks the first time the organization has moved up in the NBA Draft Lottery. The Mavericks entered the event slotted at No. 11, with only a 1.8% chance of securing the top pick and an 8.50% chance at moving into one of the top four positions.
This is the second time that Dallas has held the first-overall selection. In 1981, the Mavericks used the first overall pick to select Mark Aguirre out of DePaul in the second-ever draft in Mavericks franchise history.
Drafting the 6-foot-9 Flagg will serve as a small consolation for Mavericks fans who are still reeling from the loss of generational talent Luka Doncic. On February 1, Mavericks GM Nico Harrison made a shocking decision by trading Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The trade, which returned an often-injured Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick, drew widespread criticism from NBA players, fans, and the media alike.
The repercussions were swift: season ticket holders demanded refunds, and there was a notable decline in home game attendance and merchandise sales. ESPN reported that the trade cost the Mavericks tens of millions of dollars this season and could potentially cost them nine figures over the next several years.
Despite several media appearances, Harrison has yet to fully explain the rationale behind his decision to trade away the five-time All-Star and First Team All-NBA selection just seven months after Doncic led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals.
Selecting Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick this summer could help alleviate some of the fan dissatisfaction and financial losses incurred from trading Doncic. However, the Mavericks still have a long way to go in rebuilding goodwill with fans, many of whom continue to chant 'Fire Nico' at various events in the Dallas area.

Austin Wells' 5 RBIs, Aaron Judge's 469-foot homer power Yankees to rout of Royals

Austin Wells hit a three-run homer and finished with five RBIs, Aaron Judge hit the third-longest homer in the majors this season, and the New York Yankees routed the Kansas City Royals 10-2 on Tuesday night. Max Fried (9-1) bounced back from his first loss of the season, pitching seven innings of two-run ball for New York. Wells homered on a full-count pitch from Noah Cameron (2-2) with two outs in the fourth inning, then added a two-run double in the sixth after a 10-pitch duel with Taylor Clarke. He matched his career high for RBIs in a game. Judge's two-run homer in the first had an exit velocity of 117.9 mph and traveled 469 feet, landing on the roof of the Royals Hall of Fame in left field. Only the Angels' Mike Trout and Logan O'Hoppe have hit longer home runs this season. Judge added a bloop RBI single in the sixth inning, when the Yankees put the game away with five more runs off the Kansas City bullpen. Cody Bellinger drove in one of them with the 1,000th hit of his career. Cameron wound up allowing six runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. It was the first time in the left-hander's first six big league starts that he allowed more than one run or failed to make it through six innings. Jac Caglianone singled and had an RBI groundout in his home debut for Kansas City. Jonathan India homered in the sixth, and Tyler Tolbert singled in the eighth for his first big league hit. KEY MOMENT Judge's homer sent a shock through a star-studded crowd. Among those at Kauffman Stadium were Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Hall of Famers George Brett and Reggie Jackson, and actor and noted Yankees fan Alfonso Ribeiro. KEY STAT Judge has reached safely in 61 of 65 games this season, including every game the Yankees have played on the road. UP NEXT RHP Clarke Schmidt (2-3, 4.04 ERA) starts Tuesday night for New York. LHP Kris Bubic (5-3, 1.43 ERA) gets the nod for Kansas City.

Pistons, Mavericks to play regular-season game in Mexico City on Nov. 1

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The NBA is going back to Mexico City next season, with the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons set to play a regular-season game there on Nov. 1. The Mavericks currently have the No. 1 pick in this month's draft and are expected to select Duke's Cooper Flagg. The Pistons made a huge improvement this season and reached the Eastern Conference playoffs. It will be the NBA's 34th game in Mexico since 1992. 'We take significant pride in the fact that the Mavericks organization and our supporters reflect the increased globalization of basketball and the NBA," Mavericks CEO Rick Welts said. 'The vibrancy of Mexico City and the passion of its fans make it the perfect place to host these Global Games.' The full NBA schedule for next season isn't likely to be released until late summer. The league typically announces some international games ahead of that. 'Playing a regular-season game in Mexico City will be a great experience for our players and coaches," Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said. "And we look forward to showcasing Detroit basketball to an international audience and a passionate, growing NBA fanbase.'
