Milestone man Greene lights up as Giants flex muscles

GWS superstar Toby Greene celebrated his 250-game milestone in style with a starring role in his side's hard-fought 28-point win over Carlton.
Moved into the midfield to cover for injured teammates, Greene was an influential figure throughout the Giants' 17.8 (110) to 12.10 (82) victory at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
The inspirational skipper tallied 28 disposals, six clearances and three goals as GWS improved their record to 6-5, following four defeats in their previous five games.
Carlton, meanwhile, slipped to 4-7 heading into their mid-season bye.
Greene produced a huge opening term - 11 disposals, four score involvements and two goals - and kicked the sealer to help GWS resist a late challenge.
He had plenty of teammates willing to get their hands dirty, with Tom Green (25 disposals), Lachie Whitfield (27), Lachie Ash (28) and Xavier O'Halloran (19) all busy.
Jesse Hogan (four), Jake Riccardi (three), Callum Brown (three) and Aaron Cadman (two) all kicked multiple goals as the Giants posted their second-highest score of the season.

Blues captain Patrick Cripps struck the first blow in his battle with Toby Bedford, soaring for a mark on the tagger's shoulders and nailing a perfectly executed snap at goal.
There were eight lead changes in the first half but none after the main break as GWS, whose greater efficiency in attack led to a 10-point half-time advantage, kept their noses in front.
There was controversy when Bedford hurt his right shoulder attempting a tackle and umpires stopped play nearby several seconds later, deeming the injured player was in some danger.
Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning had possession when a ball-up was called, while Bedford took his place next to Cripps at the ensuing stoppage despite his injury.
Meanwhile, the Giants turned for home with a 14-point buffer when Riccardi delivered a dagger on the three-quarter time siren.
GWS ruckman Kieren Briggs produced a highlight when he directly volleyed through a left-foot shot at a ball-up against De Koning at the top of the goal square.
Carlton briefly got within nine points in the final term, but the Giants kicked the last three goals of the contest.
Sam Docherty had 30 disposals and a goal on return for the Blues, who had few clear winners, with Sam Walsh (26 touches) and Cripps (25, one goal) also busy.
Charlie Curnow kicked two of his three goals in the first quarter, but the Giants' defenders largely kept the Blues' tall forwards out of the contest.
Carlton's defeat came despite their dominance in contested possession (154-116) and inside-50s (58-47).

City star's Socceroos hopes hit by fresh injury

Melbourne City star Mathew Leckie's latest bid to return to the Socceroos appears over after revealing he is dealing with a hamstring issue along with the busted nose suffered in the A-League Men grand final. Leckie won the Joe Marston Medal as player of the match in City's 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory on Saturday night, despite having his nose splattered across his face after copping an accidental boot early in the second half. A battered Leckie confirmed after his heroic performance that he had been called up - for the first time under Tony Popovic - for crunch World Cup qualifiers against Japan in Perth on June 5 and against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah five days later. But the 2022 World Cup hero is now unlikely to go - between both requiring assessment on his face in Melbourne on Monday and a fresh soft tissue injury. The 34-year-old revealed he had suffered a hamstring injury on Tuesday and had carried it into Saturday's decider, when he starred at defensive midfield - showcasing his grit and versatility. "I was selected for the national team but now I'm not sure. There's a good chance I won't go because of this," he said. "But also on Tuesday, I hurt my hamstring, so I basically played with a strained hamstring. "It was minor but we didn't get it scanned. I didn't want to know it was. "I just wanted to get through Friday's session. It didn't feel too bad. And then with medication and stuff (I could play)." Leckie hasn't played for Australia since the June 2024 win over Palestine, when Graham Arnold was still coach. "I want to be there. I really do," he said. "I've always said that I love the national team. I love representing Australia. "But obviously over the last two years, my body's just been a lot of dramas with injuries. "And as much as I would like to be there, what's happening now with this and recently with my leg, I really, really think I do need just a really good break. And hopefully it all works out for next season. "Just have a nice break, get through the preseason - because I need a good pre season - not just stop-start. Because I was back four or five times this year. "I need consistency. My body needs game time, and hopefully with a really good break that'll happen." He hopes that getting his body right can deliver the consistent form to make a run at a potential fourth World Cup. "I need to play a really good season to give myself a chance," he said. "If I'm playing, I'm healthy, playing well, that's what's gonna keep an opportunity to potentially compete." Leckie could at least soak up his first championship win. "It feels unbelievable," he said. "I was saying, if we had lost this game and I walked away looking like this, then I would get devastated. It's all worth it. "Now we've made another special moment where, when I finish my career, I can look back on and I've probably got scars that'll remind me as well."

'He is here': Athletics world blown away as Lachlan Kennedy records rare Aussie feat

Aussie sprinter Lachlan Kennedy has become just the second Aussie male to ever run sub-10 seconds in the 100m event having won the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya. Kennedy has been tittering around the 10 second mark across the 12 months with his personal best recorded at 10 seconds. Although the Aussie made sure he became just the second man, after Patrick Johnson, to break the 10 second barrier having recoded a 9.98 to win his race at the Kip Keino Classic. Kennedy had to do it the hard way having come from behind in a stacked field that was made up of with an Olympic medalist. Kennedy was able to break away and hold onto his narrow lead to crash over in first head Bayanda Wazala of South Africa and Kenya's African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala. "Finally, finally, the Australina has gone under 10 seconds. He has been waiting to do that for so, so long," the commentator said as Kennedy embraced his fellow sprinters with a smile. However, Kennedy wasn't truly stunned until the moment his legal time of 9.98 popped up on the board. "As soon as I saw the 9.98 I was thrilled, the feeling was so surreal. I couldn't believe it," Kennedy said after the race. Johnson achieved his record of 9.93 back in 2003 and Kennedy has one-eye on eclipsing this feat soon. Rohan Browning has the third fastest time ever recorded by an Australian with 10.01, while Matt Shirvington's best was 10.03. And while Kennedy isn't getting ahead of himself the 21-year-old is making waves in the athletics community ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo later this year. Kennedy has been selected to represent Australia at the World Championships in the 100m. Kennedy has featured for Australia at the Olympics and Indoor Championships, but never at the World Championships. Only earlier this year And the Aussie will have sent a warning shot to rivals such as Olympic gold medallist Noah Lyles. Aussie fans were absolutely delighted for Kennedy who is proving to be another global star for Australian athletics. The nation's program is currently entering its golden era with the likes of Gout Gout and Torrie Lewis making waves overseas across the last 12 months. Earlier this year, Kennedy made his Diamond League debut in Xiamen. On this occasions, he recored 10.18 - well down from his then PB of 10.00. This saw Kenya's Omanyala out run him with winner South African Akani Simbine the runaway winner in 9.99. But Kennedy has improved in the last two months and eclipsed his best time. Already in 2025, he has claimed silver in the 60m at the world indoors in Nanjing. He ran a PB of 10.00-flat in the heats at the Australian championships earlier this month, but broke this in Kenya having broken the elusive 10 second barrier.

Aussie Harper wins and Yates rides into pink at Giro

Australian Chris Harper has won the penultimate stage of the Giro d'Italia with the ride of his life - but he was still happy to play second fiddle to his one-time British teammate Simon Yates, who sensationally exploded the race to grab almost certain overall victory. Harper, a 30-year-old stalwart for Australian team Jayco AlUla, enjoyed his first ever individual grand tour victory with an epic solo effort on the brutal 20th 'queen' stage from Verres to Sestriere, conquering one of cycling's most brutal climbs, the Colle delle Finestre, to battle home alone one minute 49 seconds clear of the field. It was a wondrous moment for Harper, a fine 12-year pro, as he rode clear of a breakaway near the top of the climb on Saturday and then held on for his first race victory for nearly six years, as an incredible story was building behind him. 🎙️ "Mentally and physcially, it's been a difficult Giro. I don't think anyone deserves the Maglia Rosa more than him [Simon Yates] " - 🏆 🇦🇺 @chrisharper94 #GirodItalia — Giro d'Italia (@giroditalia) May 31, 2025 His ex-Jayco teammate Yates, now at Team Visma-Lease a Bike, dropped race leader Isaac del Toro on the Finestre with another monumental ride to clinch the leader's pink jersey with just one flat, largely ceremonial flat stage left. Yates, who'd started the day 1min 21sec adrift, ended it 3:56 ahead of del Toro and 4:43 ahead of Richard Carapaz, and he'll ride into Rome with a second grand tour title in the bag. The great irony is that 32-year-old Yates, a former Vuelta winner, had lost the Giro to Chris Froome by cracking on the same climb seven years ago when he was with the Jayco team known then as Mitchelton-Scott. Sunday's redemption ride left the Briton sobbing with joy. "I don't know what I'm happier about, though, getting a stage win or seeing Yatesy win pink. He's an awesome guy, I had the pleasure of racing with him for a couple of seasons and I don't think anyone deserves the pink jersey more than him," said Harper. "It means a lot for me to win on this stage. It's such a famous climb and I'm pretty proud to win the stage here. It's a super challenging one, and I'm really happy I could pull it off." "Mentally and physically it's been a challenging Giro," added Adelaide rider Harper, who became Australia's third stage winner of the 2025 Giro after Kaden Groves took the sixth stage and another Jayco man Luke Plapp soloed away in the eighth. "I came here looking for GC (the general classification) and I was feeling good in the first week, but then got sick on the second rest day. "I started to feel pretty bad and ended up on antibiotics, and then slipped off of the GC. After that, I was looking for a stage win." It came in dramatic fashion as he made one key push with 16km left and then finally rode his last challenger, runner-up Alessandro Verre (Arkea-B&B Hotels), off his wheel. Harper still couldn't be sure of the win, though, with Yates catching him fast in third place. "I asked the (team) car one last time how big the gap was, I knew Simon was coming, I wasn't super confident. Only once I got to about 1.5km to go, I knew I could hold on. It was a bit of a relief. "When the route was released I always had in the back of my mind to try and do something here and close the chapter, let's say," said Yates. "I'm still a bit speechless really."
