Now, NBA Insider Bobby Marks has predicted that the Lakers' star will take a further $63 million hit on his potential earnings and sign a three-year, $165 million extension. This comes in light of rumors that LeBron James will also exercise his player option and is not expected to take a friendlier deal for the team. Considering that the Lakers have clarified that they are going to build their roster around Doncic now, it is not far-fetched to predict that it will have to be Doncic who makes the sacrifice for the Lakers. He reportedly demanded that the Lakers bring on an athletic lob threat, be it in the form of a center or wing. For the Lakers to be able to sign a high-caliber lob threat, they need cap space, which they won't have enough of if Doncic takes the original deal. The Lakers are currently not a second apron team. But for the 2025-26 season, they are only $16 million in salary cap space away from that category. This means that the only way the Lakers will be able to make big moves in the offseason and free agency is if James takes a team-friendly deal instead of exercising his player option or Doncic takes a massive pay cut. If they do not have cap space to sign Reaves, they could likely lose him to free agency, as he is likely to command much more than what the Lakers will be capable of paying. The Lakers need a big man. The Mavericks need a playmaker. The situation itself sets the tone for a potential trade. On the Lakers' side, the addition of Gafford solves a majority of the team's issues in the frontcourt. With the 26-year-old joining the team, the Purple and Gold would feature a solid pick-and-roll center who can act as a lob threat at the drop of a hat. His prior experience of playing alongside Doncic is a bonus that rounds up the overall benefits of his arrival. A trade with the Mavericks also seems a bit optimistic for the Lakers. After the Davis-Doncic trade, fans were asking for Mavs GM Nico Harrison's head on a plate. The backlash of making such a trade has undoubtedly made the franchise resistant to dealing with the Purple and Gold. Of course, with limited cap flexibility, the Lakers can only do so much, and they'll have to pick and choose which positions to upgrade to narrow their search. Right now, the only untouchable players are LeBron James (along with Bronny) and his co-star Luka Doncic. Everyone else is on the table for the Lakers, including sharpshooting guard Austin Reaves. With these things in mind, we can get a full understanding of what the Lakers want to do over the next few months. This offseason, the path to improvement comes in three main steps, and it's the only way that the Lakers can be certain about their place in the West going forward. Expert Training For Luka Doncic For the Lakers, everything hinges on Luka Doncic, and if they're to get anywhere of note next season, they'll need him to be at the top of his game. With so many variables at play, it's impossible to predict how things will end up for the Lakers, but with their two superstars locked in, they already have the groundwork in place for a championship team.
