Luka Doncic Predicted To Take $63 Million Hit On Lakers' Contract Following $100 Million+ Loss In Mavericks Trade

Luka Doncic Predicted To Take $63 Million Hit On Lakers' Contract Following $100 Million+ Loss In Mavericks Trade originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Lakers star Luka Doncic is being groomed to take over the team from LeBron James after he retires. The signs of the transition from the LeBron era to the Doncic era in the Lakers have been clear ever since he was traded from the Mavericks. But the biggest question that Doncic and the Lakers faced in the upcoming summer is regarding his contract extension. Advertisement Doncic was eligible for a five-year, $345.3 million supermax contract extension with the Mavericks, but he was traded to the Lakers. Now, he can sign a $228 million extension with the Lakers. The trade meant he'll miss out on the larger potential supermax deal and lose over $100 million in potential income. Now, NBA Insider Bobby Marks has predicted that the Lakers' star will take a further $63 million hit on his potential earnings and sign a three-year, $165 million extension. This comes in light of rumors that LeBron James will also exercise his player option and is not expected to take a friendlier deal for the team. Considering that the Lakers have clarified that they are going to build their roster around Doncic now, it is not far-fetched to predict that it will have to be Doncic who makes the sacrifice for the Lakers. He reportedly demanded that the Lakers bring on an athletic lob threat, be it in the form of a center or wing. For the Lakers to be able to sign a high-caliber lob threat, they need cap space, which they won't have enough of if Doncic takes the original deal. The Lakers are currently not a second apron team. But for the 2025-26 season, they are only $16 million in salary cap space away from that category. This means that the only way the Lakers will be able to make big moves in the offseason and free agency is if James takes a team-friendly deal instead of exercising his player option or Doncic takes a massive pay cut. Advertisement Moreover, there is also the question of extending contracts of young talent like Austin Reaves, who is eligible for an extension from July 2025. If they do not have cap space to sign Reaves, they could likely lose him to free agency, as he is likely to command much more than what the Lakers will be capable of paying. Lakers Trade Rumors: Targets And Best Fit From Onyeka Okongwu to Brook Lopez, several big men have been rumored to be linked to the Lakers in a potential move in the offseason. The Lakers nearly acquired 7ft center Mark Williams in a trade with the Hornets. This trade was then reversed after the Hornets allegedly failed to meet a trade criterion. One name very commonly brought up in discussions about the Lakers is Doncic's former teammate Daniel Gafford. During Doncic's time with the Mavericks, he developed strong chemistry with the 7-foot big man. From lobs on offense to shot blocking on defense, Daniel Gafford may be the best choice for the Mavericks. Advertisement During the Mavericks' run to the NBA Finals last season, Gafford averaged 9.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 22 games. Moreover, this season, Gafford averaged 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 57 games. His shot-blocking, rebounding, and lob threat on offense make him the perfect fit for this role. Lakers Can Reunite Luka Doncic With Ex-Teammate If Mavericks Fail To Agree On Deal With 6'10 Big Man

The Los Angeles Lakers, following a disappointing early exit from the 2025 NBA Playoffs, are actively seeking solutions to bolster their roster, particularly in the frontcourt. One potential target was presented as Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford. Although initial reports made it seem like Gafford wouldn't be available for acquisition, recent updates suggest that the Lakers may still have a chance at landing the center. Advertisement Gafford's future with the Mavericks is uncertain due to ongoing contract extension negotiations. The Mavs' big man is entering the final year of his contract and wants a pay raise. However, Dallas has to consider all their options as their starting center, Dereck Lively, is also a year away from being available for a contract extension. In light of this, Gafford finds himself at a bit of an impasse with the organization. At 26 years old, he has proven to be one of the most hardworking and effective centers coming off the bench. With an average of 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, the Mavs' big man made solid contributions to the team's efforts, even during his few games as a starter. Gafford's contract is currently valued at $14.3 million. Although there is no scope to give him more money in the immediate context, the Mavs could offer him an extension. But, if this deal is not reached, it would be sensible for the team to look at trading him to get some value out of him rather than losing him in free agency. The Mavericks' position in this case is very interesting. With the No. 1 pick in the draft, Dallas is likely to select Cooper Flagg. While this has major connotations for the team's future development, it doesn't answer some pressing concerns that they will have in the immediate context. Advertisement With Kyrie Irving out, tentatively till January 2026, the Mavs are reportedly going to be on the lookout for a point guard. With the Gafford extension also looming overhead, there is a likelihood that the franchise could look to ship Gafford in an attempt to secure a playmaker and maybe another role player. Although the Purple and Gold made some moves to sign Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets before the trade deadline, they rescinded the trade as they felt they were giving up too much. However, this decision subsequently hurt them as the lack of a solid center in their rotation saw them make a quiet exit after a five-game series loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Lakers need a big man. The Mavericks need a playmaker. The situation itself sets the tone for a potential trade. Advertisement Proposed Trade Details Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Daniel Gafford Dallas Mavericks Receive: Gabe Vincent, Dalton Knecht The Lakers Could Swing For A Trade With The Mavs For Gafford A potential trade between the Lakers and the Mavericks for Daniel Gafford could work on paper. However, there are a lot of things that need to be considered first. The immediate challenge is identifying who benefits from this trade. On the Mavericks' end, acquiring Gabe Vincent and Dalton Knecht doesn't seem like a horrible idea. Vincent provides stubborn-defensive work and perimeter shooting. Meanwhile, Knecht has displayed talent for being a flat-out three-point threat as well as a gifted scorer. Advertisement However, this doesn't address the Mavericks' immediate need, which is playmaking. Although Vincent can take over the role, he has displayed very little aptitude for initiating and cultivating plays for his teammates. Although a system involving Davis and Flagg may not require a creative playmaker, the Lakers guard may not be the right fit in this context. On the Lakers' side, the addition of Gafford solves a majority of the team's issues in the frontcourt. With the 26-year-old joining the team, the Purple and Gold would feature a solid pick-and-roll center who can act as a lob threat at the drop of a hat. His prior experience of playing alongside Doncic is a bonus that rounds up the overall benefits of his arrival. A trade with the Mavericks also seems a bit optimistic for the Lakers. After the Davis-Doncic trade, fans were asking for Mavs GM Nico Harrison's head on a plate. The backlash of making such a trade has undoubtedly made the franchise resistant to dealing with the Purple and Gold. If it hasn't, Dallas will at least be more mindful of what kind of deal they make when discussing possible packages with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. Regardless, the Lakers' need for a big man has been made quite obvious. With this in mind, several potential candidates have emerged as targets. The Mavs' big man happens to be preferred because of his experience playing alongside Doncic. Advertisement While the task of bringing Gafford over could be nigh impossible, the Lakers would benefit from swinging for the fences on this one. With the possibility of LeBron James returning next season, Gafford's addition would make the Lakers an instant contender again. However, with more concerns to address, the Purple and Gold would also need to look at other major tried opportunities while simultaneously focusing on ways to improve their wing depth to bolster their perimeter defense. Perfect Offseason For The Lakers: Three Steps To Becoming Contenders In The West

Perfect Offseason For The Lakers: Three Steps To Becoming Contenders In The West originally appeared on Fadeaway World. With so much at stake for the Lakers next season, everything hinges on the choices they make this summer. While a successful offseason will look different for every Lakers fan, it's no secret that the team has a few goals they'd like to complete before the start of the next campaign. Advertisement After losing to the Timberwolves in five games in the first round, it has become clear to team management that changes are needed. Of course, with limited cap flexibility, the Lakers can only do so much, and they'll have to pick and choose which positions to upgrade to narrow their search. Right now, the only untouchable players are LeBron James (along with Bronny) and his co-star Luka Doncic. Everyone else is on the table for the Lakers, including sharpshooting guard Austin Reaves. With these things in mind, we can get a full understanding of what the Lakers want to do over the next few months. This offseason, the path to improvement comes in three main steps, and it's the only way that the Lakers can be certain about their place in the West going forward. Expert Training For Luka Doncic For the Lakers, everything hinges on Luka Doncic, and if they're to get anywhere of note next season, they'll need him to be at the top of his game. On his way out of Dallas, the Mavericks raised concerns about his conditioning and work ethic, which are values that the Lakers typically prioritize in their players. Advertisement As the face and leading playmaker of the franchise, the Lakers need Doncic to be fully committed, and that means building a plan that helps him stay in shape this summer. Whether it's with the team staff or his private workout crew, Doncic needs to show the Lakers he's committed by going above and beyond with his offseason training to ensure he's at full strength for opening night. The extra work might set up Doncic to have his best season yet, complete with MVP nominations and a place near the top of the standings. If the bad habits continue, however, it will set a bad example for the rest of the team and clash with the Lakers' winning culture. Role-Players In Free Agency Depth is another area of need for Los Angeles, and they'll need more firepower at several positions to stand a chance at winning the title. Off the bench, specifically, the Lakers need a player who they can rely on to hold it down offensively and lead the troops when LeBron and Luka are sitting. Advertisement With limited cap space, the Lakers cannot get too ambitious in free agency, but they will have a non-taxpayer mid-level exception (projected at $14.1 million) and a taxpayer mid-level exception (projected at $5.7 million) to potentially sign free agents. As far as potential targets, several names have emerged, such as Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Clint Capela, and Steven Adams. Any player who's affordable and can contribute meaningful minutes off the bench is worthy of consideration. If the Lakers play this right, they can add some significant depth on the wing (or anywhere else) that's still within their budget. Trade For A Top-Tier Center The Lakers may not be looking for an outright star, but they certainly need an upgrade at center over Jaxson Hayes. While the options in free agency are too expensive for LA, they can make it happen on the trade market, where they have a number of assets to offer (players and draft picks). Advertisement By building an offer around Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, or Dalton Knecht, the Lakers can land a high-level player in the frontcourt who can catch lobs from Doncic and play defense on the other end. Potential names include Daniel Gafford, Jarrett Allen, and Nic Claxton. Or, they could also chase young players like Day'Ron Sharpe or Jericho Sims. With added size and strength down low, the Lakers will no doubt become a much better defensive team, and it'll go a long way toward maximizing their potential as a unit. If they're able to keep Jaxson Hayes in the deal, they'll be set in the backcourt with a more versatile big man rotation to compete against teams like the Timberwolves, Nuggets, and Thunder. With so many variables at play, it's impossible to predict how things will end up for the Lakers, but with their two superstars locked in, they already have the groundwork in place for a championship team. To complete their ideal offseason, all they need to do is ensure their core players have enough support and are in the right state of mind for a long and competitive season.
