Rispoli's wild ride aboard Journalism makes him the first Italian jockey to win a Triple Crown race
BALTIMORE (AP) — Umberto Rispoli took quite a path to make history.
Rispoli became the first jockey from Italy to win a Triple Crown race Saturday, squeezing between horses around the top of the stretch and then riding Journalism to a tremendous rally in the stretch run of the Preakness.
Rispoli's colt was the even-money favorite, but this was no easy trip. He kept Journalism near the rail, which saved ground but forced him to slip between Goal Oriented and Clever Again — with no shortage of contact — before he could even begin making a run at 15-1 shot Gosger.
'I got in trouble at the quarter pole and, look, he make himself keep going,' said Rispoli, who came over from Italy in 2020. 'It's all about him. It's a privilege to ride a horse like him.'
Journalism's win brought to mind Afleet Alex's victory in this same race 20 years ago, when the horse and jockey Jeremy Rose nearly went down when they were cut off by another horse at the top of the stretch.
Journalism's anxious moment was around the same spot at Pimlico, and although he didn't stumble the way Afleet Alex did, he had to deal with horses on both sides of him.
'Jeremy Rose almost fell off from the horse. That was for me probably the most spectacular Preakness that I ever see,' Rispoli said. 'But even what we saw today. This horse, coming back after two weeks from a tough trip in the (Kentucky) Derby … it was an amazing effort. I wish I would have give him a softer race, but this is a part of horse racing.'
After working his way through traffic, there was still the matter of catching Gosger.
'At the 16th pole, I say OK, I think I'm going to be late but probably on time,' Rispoli said.
With one final surge, Journalism pulled ahead and won by a half-length.
'When I cross the line, it's all 20 years of my career that pass in front of me,' Rispoli said. 'I had to wait so long to ride a champion like that.'
Journalism acquitted himself well in finishing second in the Kentucky Derby, and when Derby winner Sovereignty skipped the Preakness, Journalism was the clear favorite.
He would have to win from behind, though. Rispoli credited Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey with the advice to save ground in this race.

'Umberto, all credit to him, he chose to save ground. That's what it takes to win these races like this,' trainer Michael McCarthy said. 'Obviously found himself in a little bit of a conundrum there for six or eight jumps. Thankful that he and the horse came out of it unscathed. That's the most important thing, win, lose or draw.'
When Rispoli was asked about being the first jockey from Italy with a Triple Crown win, there were shouts of 'Viva Italia!' before he answered. He said his idol was top Italian jockey Frankie Dettori, who was expected to retire at the end of 2023 but continued racing.
'I think you have to ride a couple of more years to get one of the winners of the Triple Crown to equal me,' Rispoli said. 'It's even difficult to describe the feeling when you cross the wire in those races. You just dream about that.'

3-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer works his way back to rotation with Triple-A rehab start
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer topped out at 94 mph and threw 56 pitches on Friday night in his first Triple-A rehab outing since the Toronto right-hander suffered inflammation in his right thumb. Scherzer, 40, signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. Scherzer left his debut start with the team against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of inflammation in his thumb. Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4 1/3 innings in an anticipated start for Triple-A Buffalo against the Columbus Clippers. He waved in appreciation to a crowd that gave him a big ovation as he walked off the field. 'It'll be the most watched Triple-A game for a while,' Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. 'Or most uploaded Triple-A game.' Scherzer did allow a 425-foot home run to one of the top 100 prospects in minor league baseball, Columbus left fielder C.J. Kayfus. Schneider said ahead of Toronto's game Friday night in Philadelphia that the box score didn't matter to him. He wanted to make sure Scherzer came out of the game healthy. 'I want to see how Max feels tomorrow,' Schneider said. 'I could care less about the line score. I want to see 60-65 pitches. I want to see the fastball velo is good and he's coming out healthy.' Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29. Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with Washington in 2016 and 2017. Schneider said Scherzer would likely need one more rehab start before he can join the Blue Jays' rotation. The Blue Jays are in second place behind the Yankees in the AL East. Giants' Matt Chapman to start rehab for sprained hand in a week
LOS ANGELES (AP) — San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman can begin rehabbing his sprained right hand in a week. He visited Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Friday and was told he has to wear his splint until then, the team announced. The Giants were in town to open a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. Chapman got hurt sliding into first base against Atlanta last Sunday. He went on the injured list two days later and is eligible to return on June 20. The 32-year-old infielder indicated he could be on a faster track. 'He's always going to be optimistic if you talk to him, so you got to temper that a little bit,' Giants manager Bob Melvin said, 'but the news we got from Dr. Shin was good news. He's very pleased with how it's recovering.' Melvin added that until Chapman starts rehabbing, it's tough to forecast a return date. Chapman was batting .243 with 12 home runs, 30 RBIs and seven stolen bases. The five-time Gold Glove winner signed a $151 million, six-year deal last year. A frustrated McIlroy smashes a US Open tee marker but makes it to the weekend anyway
OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — First Rory McIlroy flung an iron down the 12th fairway. Then he used driver to demolish a tee marker on 17. He might not win the sportsmanship award at the U.S. Open, but he will get to play on the weekend. McIlroy overcame two rounds of disappointment by draining a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Friday to finish at 6-over par and guarantee himself a tee time at Oakmont this weekend. Other than the approach shot he hit on 18 to save the week, or the 20-foot birdie he made on 15 after teeing off into the first cut, very little of his first 36 holes was pretty. McIlroy's weekend was still in limbo when he walked to the tee on the drivable par-4 17th hole, then blocked the shot into a greenside bunker. He used his left arm to smash the club down and shatter the nearby tee marker. He made par there. A few hours earlier on the par-5 12th — another decent birdie chance — McIlroy catapulted his iron down the fairway after pulling his second shot into the left rough. He made par there, too. The birdie at the end capped a round of 2-over 72. It did not mask the issues McIlroy has been facing since his driver was deemed non-conforming before the PGA Championship, sending him on a mad search for a reliable replacement.
