At VivaTech, L'Oréal focuses on AI-powered beauty and longevity

At the ninth edition of the Viva Technology trade show, running through June 14 at Porte de Versailles, French beauty giant L'Oréal unveils a series of innovations combining personalization, sustainability, and longevity.
Among the highlights is Beauty Genius by L'Oréal Paris, a personal beauty assistant powered by agentic artificial intelligence, which is now available via WhatsApp through a partnership with Meta. The tool connects instantly with consumers by leveraging the world's most widely used messaging platform. Yves Saint Laurent Beauty's Hyper Look Studio allows users to recreate looks sourced from a real-time social content feed.
The immersive experience also includes skin diagnostics with Cell BioPrint, a miniaturized laboratory that assesses longevity biomarkers in under five minutes. Developed in partnership with NanoEntek, the innovation enables consumers to take control of their skin health and influence their personal skin-aging trajectory.
The theme of longevity becomes strategic
Longevity now represents a strategic focus for the group. On Tuesday, June 10, L'Oréal leveraged VivaTech to host an event entirely dedicated to the topic at Visionnaire, its Paris headquarters on rue Royale. In front of about 100 journalists from 25 countries, the group outlined its holistic vision: L'Oréal Longevity Integrative Science, a scientific approach aimed at slowing the biological aging of the skin by targeting nine key factors identified through the Longevity AI Cloud. This platform analyzes around 260 biomarkers of skin longevity.
The strategy builds on three pillars: diagnostic tools, new active ingredients, and product innovations. The latest example is Lancôme Absolue Longevity Soft Cream with PDRN, a bio-stimulator patented until 2044. The range will soon expand to include dietary supplements.
At VivaTech, L'Oréal also presented Interstellar Lab's BioPod, a vertical farming technology powered by artificial intelligence that supports resource-efficient cultivation of cosmetic ingredients. In perfumery, the group introduced Osmobloom, developed in partnership with Cosmo International Fragrances. The innovation enables a new method of extracting floral essences without degrading the plants.
L'Oréal also announced a strategic alliance with Nvidia, the leader in electronic chips for AI. "L'Oréal and its ecosystem of partners will leverage the Nvidia AI Enterprise platform to accelerate the development and deployment of AI solutions, such as large-scale 3D rendering of the group's products," L'Oréal said in a statement.

According to Quebec newspaper Le Devoir, these operations expanded with little "consideration for Indigenous populations." The company's influence, driven by its exploitation of local land and maritime resources, soon extended from Canada's far north to as far south as San Francisco, playing a key role in shaping the economy of the so-called "New World." As the Industrial Revolution and the decline of the fur trade reshaped the market, Hudson's Bay's trading posts gradually evolved into retail stores. From the 1880s onward, the company built a nationwide department store network. Over the decades, it acquired several Canadian chains, including Simpsons, Woodward's and Zellers, while its signature multi-colored stripes became an enduring emblem. The company briefly ventured into Europe, acquiring Germany's Galeria Kaufhof in 2015 and taking over the Netherlands' V&D retail network in 2017. However, facing financial losses, Hudson's Bay divested its European operations by 2019. Ninety-six stores affected In Canada, Hudson's Bay's decline began over the past decade. The company operated 80 Hudson's Bay stores positioned in the upscale segment, along with three Saks Fifth Avenue stores and 13 Saks OFF 5TH outlets. Business further deteriorated after the pandemic, with the company citing the fast-changing retail landscape and elevated U.S. tariffs as key challenges. Owned since 2008 by U.S.-based NRDC Equity Partners, the company sought creditor protection in April 2025 under Canada's Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), citing difficulties meeting its financial obligations. Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, the company failed to secure funding for a potential restructuring and ultimately moved toward full liquidation. In recent weeks, stores sold off remaining inventory ahead of a June 1 closing date. The closures led to 8,300 job losses across retail locations, with nearly 1,000 additional layoffs expected in offices and logistics centers by mid-June. Local media reported widespread emotion among longtime employees— some with three decades of service— and among customers who associate Hudson's Bay with family memories. However, the brand name, emblems and logos will live on. In mid-May, Canadian retail group Canadian Tire acquired the rights for 30 million Canadian dollars (19 million euros). A 'strategic and patriotic' choice "It is difficult to witness the final days of another iconic Canadian retailer. While the circumstances are unfortunate, we are proud to step in for customers. This decision is both strategic and patriotic," said Canadian Tire president Greg Hicks. The company plans to integrate Hudson's Bay's signature stripes into its private label products and has reportedly submitted bids for several store leases. Up to 28 store leases could also be transferred to Chinese billionaire Ruby Liu, a shopping center owner planning to launch a new department store chain in Canada.

The collaboration aims to streamline the brand's after-sales service, which has already served more than 1,000 customers since its launch in 2024. While Prolong provides a tool designed to "orchestrate and enhance the entire post-purchase experience"— offering detailed tracking and a user-friendly interface— The North Face works with Advanced Clothing Solutions (ACS) in the UK to manage customer returns and restore products to good condition. The brand also offers its repair service in Germany through a partnership with United Repair Centre (URC). "The North Face is committed to gradually expanding its paid repair service across the region, prioritising countries where customer demand is strongest and working with the right partners," said Marta Pellegrino, sustainability and CSR manager. For now, the repair service is available primarily through The North Face retail stores, but the brand plans to extend it to its e-commerce site in the future. The service covers a wide range of products, with some exclusions, including footwear, hard luggage and the replacement of waterproof zippers. Repairs are offered free of charge under warranty for manufacturing defects. For paid repairs, The North Face manages logistics and covers shipping costs. Pricing is available both online and in stores. "Repair and processing times typically range from seven to 14 days, depending on the shipping providers," added Marta Pellegrino.
