Panchkula: Finally, the Panchkula municipal corporation has finalised a firm that will complete the construction of its new office building, whose work has been stuck for years.
The firm quoted Rs 24 crore for the job, which was the lowest bid in the recent tendering process. The tenders were floated two to three times to find a company for the long-pending work, but it only led to a further delay. Now, the confirmation has been sent to the
Haryana chief minister
for the final nod.
Once approved, the work will start here with a nine-month deadline. MC commissioner Aparajita confirmed that the lowest bidding agency has been finalised.
"The file has now been sent to the CM for the final approval," mayor Kulbhushan Goyal added.
The urban local bodies department earlier granted approval to complete the pending work, clearing the way for floating a new tender. The building's main structure in Sector 3 is already in place, but finishing tasks such as tiling, electrical work, painting, remain incomplete. Earlier, the previous contractor completed work worth around Rs 11 crore before the MC terminated the contract due to discrepancies found in its execution.

Approximately Rs 17 crore of work is still pending.
Residents face hassles
At present, Panchkula MC operates from three separate offices spread across Sectors 4, 12A, and 14. This inconveniences residents who have to visit multiple locations to get their issues resolved. The situation is complicated further as officers and engineering staff are located in different sectors, making it difficult for the public to receive prompt services. In Sector 14, one of the branch offices is cramped under the basement stairs due to space constraints.

Roads dug up, projects delayed: Will Ahmedabad meet monsoon deadline?

Ahmedabad: As monsoon clouds hover just weeks away, a more immediate storm is brewing on the ground. The city's streets, dug up in the name of infrastructure, have become daily minefields for commuters. Open pits, half-cut roads, and scattered earth and debris now define city roads. Peak hour snarls are routine. Pedestrians trip over gaping holes. Cave-ins loom. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) ambitious Rs 841.45 crore pre-monsoon infrastructure blitz, spanning 36 flood-mitigation projects, is far from complete. As of May 12, official data shows projects worth Rs 644.34 crore marked "Work in Progress". However, a closer look reveals many are barely out of the starting blocks. Several crucial pre-monsoon works show minimal physical progress, ranging from 20% to 30%. In the North West Zone, two stormwater pumping station projects (Bopal lake and Mumatpura Talav in Thaltej ward) are at just 20% progress, even though its deadline is Feb 2026. Rainwater line rehabilitation projects from Rachna Circle to Ghevar Circle and from Rameshwar crossroads to FSL crossroads in Shahibaug ward are at 30% and 25% respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Viva a melhor experiência de estudo no exterior (Inscreva-se agora) Study Abroad Saiba Mais Undo A Rs 1.62 crore project to lay a 1,200-mm rainwater line from Kabir Enclave to Mumatpura Talav has reached 40% progress, placing it slightly higher within the reported range. Worse, many projects are at a mere 1-3% physical progress, some still in survey mode, others not even started. A critical Rs 155 crore micro-tunnelling project from Manek Baug to the Sabarmati, representing 18.4% of the budget, has not moved past tendering. With approvals pending, pre-monsoon completion is unlikely. It doesn't end there. About Rs 191.04 crore (nearly 23% of the total budget) is tied up in projects where no construction has begun. The South West Zone is particularly concerning: a Rs 36.27 crore stormwater box project is at 1% progress, a Rs 78.18 crore lake interlinking initiative (a key flood mitigation strategy) has reached just 3%, and a Rs 46.42 crore rehabilitation plan remains in the survey stage at 1% physical progress.

Forest dept to simplify rules for growing sandalwood trees on pvt lands

Mysuru: With a view to encouraging farmers to grow sandalwood trees, the Karnataka forest department is contemplating simplifying rules to grow them on private lands, said forest minister Eshwar Khandre. Thanking Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) for distributing Suraksha kits containing a jacket, bag, and a pair of boots to forest watchers, forest guards, and elephant handlers under its CSR funds at an event at the KSOU auditorium here, the minister said the govt would make a decision in this regard within a week or two. In response to KSDL's request for support in growing more sandalwood trees on forest lands, Khandre replied positively, stating he would discuss it with forest officers and communicate with them. He also suggested approaching the revenue department, noting that there are many abandoned lands that can be utilised for this purpose. Earlier, KSDL chairman Appaji C S Nadagouda, an MLA, proposed to the forest department to have a memorandum of understanding to grow sandalwood trees on forest land, suggesting that they would bear the cost of growing provided they're given the land. KSDL would then buy the mature sandalwood trees from the forest department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo He claimed sandalwood production declined over the decades and expressed the need for a policy to increase production. The chairman said that more than 90% of their products made of sandalwood are in demand without any marketing. About 82% of sales happen outside Karnataka, he said. KSDL reserved Rs 7 crore under CSR funds, of which Rs 2 crore was utilised to provide Suraksha Kits to nearly 10,000 forest personnel at the grassroots, including about 2,100 in the Mysuru forest division. On the occasion, the chairman also revealed plans to expand its business and increase its revenue to Rs 3,000 crore in the next few years. In the previous fiscal year, KSDL earned about Rs 410 crore in revenue. Minister Khandre also appreciated wildlife photographer and minister MB Patil's son, Dhruv Patil, who is also a member of the State Wildlife Board, for his concern towards forest watchers and guards. Minister for large and medium industries and infrastructure development MB Patil remembered Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar on his birth anniversary and for his vision of setting up sandalwood soap industries a century ago, in 1916. He said Mysuru sandal products are popular worldwide. KSDL team to visit Australia KSDL officers, led by its chairman Nadagouda, will be visiting Australia to study the strategies adopted to grow more sandal trees. "Australia has been successfully producing sandal trees, and we want to study it and how successful they have been in making byproducts. The team will leave for Australia next week," he said. MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah and senior Karnataka forest officers, including PCCF (wildlife) Subash Malkhede and PCCF Kumar Pushakar, were present.

AAI suspends land acquisition for Surat airport expansion

Surat: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has asked the Surat collector to put in abeyance the process to acquire 25.33 acres of land to expand the Surat airport. The AAI and Gujarat govt had signed an MoU in Dec 2023, under which AAI proposed to expand the airport precinct and put in place the CAT-1 approach lighting system and an ASR-MSSR radar facility. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sources said AAI officials have told the collector's office they do not want the land. It is germane that Runway 22 is already displaced by 615m, due to alleged illegal constructions affecting the aircraft funnel path. With no CAT-1 instrument landing system (ILS), safety concerns will persist. A senior Surat airport official, on condition of anonymity, told TOI: "We noticed there are no major diversions due to fog or smoke for which the CAT-1 lighting system would be needed. We do not have much fog like Delhi or Amritsar. We felt spending crores on the system was unnecessary as we don't have major issues. In the last year, only three flights were diverted due to fog. We thus asked the collector to put the land acquisition in abeyance. " Surat collectorate officials confirmed having received the request. "As AAI does not need the land anymore, we will not proceed with the acquisition process," said an official. The acquisition plan was referred to as the Surat Airport Expansion Project by AAI and the Gujarat govt's civil aviation department. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) for it had been signed in Dec 2023, agreeing to acquire land through a special land acquisition officer under the observation of the Surat collector. AAI had asked for 20.33 acres of land for the CAT-1 approach lighting system and five acres for the ASR and MSSR facility. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A request for 25.33 acres was made by two letters written in April 2025 and May 2025. The AAI suddenly decided they did not want the land anymore. It was proposed that the 25.33 acres of land would be acquired from 20 owners, for which a budget of Rs 215 crore had been approved. With the CAT-1 and advanced radar project put on hold, aviation experts raised concerns about safety issues. An aviation expert said: "The CAT-I lighting system is vital for ensuring safe landings during low visibility conditions, especially in winters and monsoons. Its importance is amplified at Surat airport, where Runway 22 is already displaced by 615 metres due to obstacle limitations — a matter currently under litigation through a public interest litigation (PIL)." He added: "The airport regularly handles diverted flights from Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Vadodara in adverse weather. Additionally, fog in winter and industrial smoke from the Hazira-Sachin belt, along with the heavy monsoon rain, often reduce visibility below safe landing limits. With 24x7 operations and a high volume of landings on Runway 22, which is shortened by 615 metres due to the height obstacle issue, leaving merely 2291 metres, CAT I lighting would provide visual guidance to ensure safe and uninterrupted landings in low visibility. " ASR-MSSR is a modern radar system used at airports and by air traffic control for surveillance and navigation. ASR stands for Airport Surveillance Radar and MSSR stands for Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar.
