UConn Football Preview 2025: Are the Huskies Actually Good Now?

Miami Herald16-05-2025

What exactly was that?UConn wasn't just 9-4 good, it was lose-at-Duke-by-just-five-points good. It was lose-to-Wake Forest-by-three-points good. It was push-Syracuse-on-the-road-in-a-31-24-loss good. For the most part, over the last decade-plus, this is a program that only won against the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to fill out a schedule. But in the third year under Jim Mora, UConn came up with its first winning season since 2010, back when it was in the (sky point) Big East.
It wasn't like UConn faced Ohio State and Georgia. Still, after getting obliterated by Maryland in the opener, it put together one of the strongest and most competitive seasons in school history. The special teams were great, the offense scored when it had the chance, the defense was fantastic on third downs, and there weren't a ton of penalties. When you don't have elite talent, doing just about everything right is a must. This year's team should be good enough to do it all again.
UConn Huskies Preview 2025: Offense
X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN- The offense worked. The 415 points were the most ever put up by a UConn attack since the program moved up to the FBS. There weren't too many empty trips in the red zone, the running game was great, and the line was among the best in the nation at keeping defenses out of the backfield. It'll be a good line again, but it could take a little bit to put it all together around center Wes Hoeh, the lone returning starter. There's depth, though, with players like Carsten Casady able to move around where needed inside. Getting Ty Chan (Notre Dame) at left tackle was one of the better under-the-radar pickups in the portal.
- The backs are there to keep the production going. This wasn't a dominant running team, but it averaged over five yards per carry, helped by the 830 yards and eight scores from Cam Edwards. Mel Brown added 673 yards, and even though second-leading rusher Durell Robinson left for Auburn, picking up MJ Flowers from Eastern Illinois will boost the depth.- Joe Fagnano pulled off a stunning season with 20 touchdown passes and four picks, and former Oklahoma super-recruit Nick Evers got in plenty of work and added more of a rushing threat.- Former Wisconsin Badger Skyler Bell turned into UConn's most dangerous receiver, averaging over 17 yards per catch with five scores.Caleb Burton (Auburn) is coming in to be an instant starter on the inside, and Chris Parker (Central Michigan) will take over on the outside. Louis Hansen is a veteran tight end who caught 24 passes with four scores.
UConn Huskies Preview 2025: Defense
- The UConn defense is building back up through the transfer portal. The front is getting the most help with a total overhaul.Stephon Wright (Texas Southern), Ben Smiley (Virginia), and Trent Jones (Iowa State) come in to take over on the ends, and 290-pound Vincent Carroll-Jackson (Nebraska) needs to gum up the inside.
- The stars are gone from the linebacking corps. Donovan Branch is the lone holdover coming off a 24-tackle season. Kansas State's Terry Kirksey has to be a pass rusher at one outside spot, and Tyquan King (Temple) and Bryun Parham (Washington) will be statistical stars on the inside.- Cam Chadwick is a good young corner who held his own as a freshman, and Sammy Anderson (Austin Peay) is a veteran who'll fit right in. Veteran safeties Malachi Mclean and D'Mon Brinson should combine for over 100 tackles, but Penn State transfer Tyrece Mills could be the best of the bunch.
UConn Huskies Key to the Season
Keep the good passing teams from going off.The UConn offense will be terrific, but it's not built to crank it up in the shootouts. The Huskies faced four Power Four programs in the regular season, and those were the four losses. And why?Besides being Power Four programs, all four threw for more than 265 yards. UConn was 8-0 - including in the bowl win over a depleted North Carolina - when allowing fewer.
UConn Huskies Key Player
Stephon Wright, EDGE Sr.The Huskies will turn everyone loose to get into the backfield, but they're missing almost all of the main pass rushers who made the defense so strong. That's where Wright needs to help. He's not a true edge rusher, but the 280-pounder from Austin Peay has to apply the pressure.
UConn Huskies Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss
Top Transfer In: Tyquan King, LB Sr.It might be former Washington linebacker Bryun Parham if he gets back to the form he showed at San Jose State in 2022 and 2023. King started out at East Carolina, moved to Temple, and last year was a machine, making 112 tackles with three tackles and six tackles for loss.Top Transfer Out: Pryce Yates, EDGE Sr.The three-year producer for the Huskies left after making 108 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and 30 tackles for loss as the star of the defensive front. He'll be working in Bill Belichick's rotation at North Carolina.
UConn Huskies Key Game
at Syracuse, Sept. 6Let's think super-big here. UConn didn't lose last season to any non-Power Four program, and it might be favored against all of the Group of Five types this year. Pull off a win at Boston College, get by Duke at home, win at Syracuse in early September, and maybe the College Football Play… nah, but at least the Huskies could get into the discussion if they get by the Orange.- 2025 UConn Huskies Schedule Breakdown

UConn Huskies 2024 Fun Stats
- Red Zone Scores: UConn 41-of-44, Opponents 36-of-43- Penalties: Opponents 99 for 835 yards, UConn 69 for 685 yards- 3rd Quarter Scoring: UConn 99, Opponents 42
UConn Huskies 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen
Can the Huskies have the same confidence and efficiency as last year? That's asking a lot considering how they managed to find ways to play up or down to their competition. There will be a misfire somewhere - Air Force will be a tough out, and going to Buffalo could be sneaky-nasty. On the plus side, there are only three games against Power Four teams; last year there were four.
The schedule is, for the most part, the same in terms of degree of difficulty. The games against Group of Five programs are all winnable, the dates with the ACC programs should be good fights, and it'll all culminate with a third bowl appearance in four seasons under Jim Mora.Set The UConn Huskies Win Total At … 8Likely Wins: Ball State, Central Connecticut State, FIU, UAB50/50 Games: Air Force, at Buffalo, at Delaware, Duke, at Florida Atlantic, at RiceLikely Losses: at Boston College, at Syracuse

UConn's Dan Hurley, St. John's Rick Pitino not interested in Knicks HC job

If the New York Knicks want their next head coach to be one who has Big East ties, they'll have to look for someone other than two of the conference's top current coaches. UConn's Dan Hurley and St. John's Rick Pitino have each turned down interest in the Knicks' head coach vacancy. Hurley had been viewed as a possible frontrunner for the Knicks' head coach position after expressing interest in the Los Angeles Lakers' head coach job last offseason. However, he ended up turning down Los Angeles after receiving an offer, with his ties to the Northeast being cited as a reason why he opted to remain at UConn. "Not another summer of that," Hurley told The Hartford Courant when asked if he had any interest in the Knicks' job. Hurley wound up agreeing to a six-year, $50 million extension with UConn after turning down the Lakers. The Huskies' bid to become the first team to three-peat as national champions in over 50 years fell short, with UConn losing in the Round of 32 last season. Pitino's St. John's squad was one of the roadblocks UConn dealt with along the way as the Johnnies won the Big East regular-season and tournament titles. It marked the first time since 1992 that St. John's had won the regular season title and the first time since 2000 that it had won the Big East tournament title. St. John's runs to both titles captivated New York City and made Pitino one of the most popular figures in the city's sports scene. But Pitino made it clear he didn't want the Knicks job after they fired Thom Thibodeau following their run to the Eastern Conference finals on Tuesday, mentioning the enormous expectations the next coach will have to deal with. "Absolutely not," Pitino said when asked during the YES Network's broadcast of Wednesday's game between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Guardians, in which he threw the first pitch. "I think whoever comes in, if he doesn't get to the Finals, it's going to be deemed an unsuccessful season," Pitino added. "So, whoever comes in has got so much pressure on them to take this team to the next level, 'cause that's why they're doing it, obviously, in their minds." Pitino, a 72-year-old New York native, was the head coach of the Knicks for two seasons in the late 1980s (1987-89). New York went 90-74 in Pitino's tenure. Pitino also had a three-plus-year stint as the head coach of the Boston Celtics from 1997-2001 before resigning. As Hurley and Pitino have taken themselves off the board, there are a handful of other notable options for the Knicks in their search to replace Thibodeau. Former Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone opened up as the betting favorite, via DraftKings Sportsbook. Cleveland Cavaliers associate head coach Johnnie Bryant has the second-best odds to become the Knicks' next head coach. Bryant, who was the Knicks' associate head coach from 2020-24, was one of the finalists for the Phoenix Suns' head coach vacancy, but they agreed to a deal to hire fellow Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott on Wednesday. Former Villanova coach Jay Wright has also been a widely speculated candidate for the job. He coached three of the team's top players in college (Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart), lending some credence to the rumors he could be the team's next head coach. But FOX Sports college basketball expert John Fanta doesn't anticipate Wright unretiring to coach the Knicks. "Jay Wright is enjoying red wine, basketball, television and his family," Fanta said on "The Herd." "If he wanted to coach again, he'd be the Villanova coach. "Jay Wright is not going anywhere." The Knicks also have interest in Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka and Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, longtime NBA insider Marc Stein reported. After capturing the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, Houston isn't interested in letting New York potentially negotiate a deal and trade involving Udoka, per The Athletic. As New York gets in the trenches in its head coach search, the decision to fire Thibodeau still felt a bit of a surprise to many. He helped turn around the Knicks in his five seasons as head coach, making the playoffs four times following an eight-year postseason drought. This past season marked their best playoff run in a quarter-century, with New York reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2000. Following their second-round upset of the defending champion Celtics, the Knicks fell to the Indiana Pacers in six games. Pitino seemed to be among those surprised by the move, too. "I think everybody's kind of shocked," Pitino said. "You don't fire people that take you to the Eastern finals and with the whole town so excited about the team. They partied on 7th Avenue and we're not even in the Finals. So I think everybody's in shock. But rather than pass judgement, Thibs has got three years left. "They made the decision. They've got to live with it. Let's see." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Details for Florida basketball's 2025 matchup against UConn Huskies revealed

Details for Florida basketball's 2025 matchup against UConn Huskies revealed Florida basketball's matchup against the UConn Huskies at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Tuesday, Dec. 9, was officially announced by ESPN on Wednesday, setting up a rematch of the 2025 NCAA Tournament Second Round. The Gators narrowly won that game, 77-75, en route to their third-ever national championship. This fall, the two teams will once again battle on a neutral court in the second half of the Jimmy V Classic, which is named for NC State head coach Jimmy Valvano, who won a national title at age 37. Florida skipper Todd Golden is just two years older, and his recent success made him the youngest head coach to win a ring since Jimmy V. The game is scheduled as the second half of a double-header that opens with the BYU Cougars facing off with the Clemson Tigers, which tips off at 6:30 p.m. ET. Florida-UConn follows with a 9 p.m. ET start time. The Huskies hold the all-time edge over the Gators with a 5-2 record dating back to their first meeting in the Sweet 16 of the 1994 NCAA Tournament. Third-seeded Florida prevailed in overtime, 69-60, over second-seeded UConn to advance to the Elite Eight. Connecticut won the next five meetings spanning from 2013 to 2022, with a pair of victories coming inside the O'Connell Center and the other two on their home court; the third came in the 2014 NCAA Tournament Semifinals — a 63-53 triumph. Then, of course, Florida bookended the series win a win in the Big Dance this spring. Georgia Southern Football Preview 2025: Experienced Eagles Can Win the Sun Belt

Clay Helton has a good thing going at Georgia was able to flip the program around to his style relatively quickly, and while it hasn't always been smooth, the Eagles have gone to three straight bowl games and are coming off an excellent eight-win can he and the staff tie up all the loose ends? The offense was great in the red zone, but it's all short-to-midrange throws with WAY too many turnovers. The team won the penalty battle by a massive margin, but couldn't come up with a third down stop. It beat a slew of good teams, lost to a few mediocre ones, and while getting to bowl games is nice, the Eagles are 0-3 in them under it's Year Four, he's found a home post-USC life, and he's the type of coach schools want to see succeed. Even with all of the tweaking and issues, Georgia Southern has been consistently good - last year it showed signs of being one of those find-a-way-to-win season's team doesn't have a ton of depth in key spots, but overall, it should be Helton's best one yet. Georgia Southern Eagles Preview 2025: Offense X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN- The offense didn't quite work as well as it should've, and there were too many turnovers, but the midrange passing game was okay, and now there's enough back to do even more, starting with quarterback JC French. He's a good runner, three for over 2,800 yards and 13 touchdowns, and now he has to cut down on the picks, throwing 11. - The receiving corps is getting help from the transfer portal with Dylan Gary (West Georgia) for the outside and Camden Brown (Auburn) in the slot. Veteran Josh Dallas is back in the slot after catching 46 passes for 614 yards and a team-high six end River Helms (WKU) should be a major short target, catching 41 passes for five scores over the last two years. - Jalen White and his 13 rushing scores are gone, but No. 2 man OJ Arnold is back after averaging over five yards per carry, and ultra-quick David Mdabinga should do far more. Both can catch.- The offensive front returns full of veterans. It wasn't great at keeping teams out of the backfield, but the ground game should be better behind all-star guards Pichon Wembley and Caleb Cook. Georgia Southern Eagles Preview 2025: Defense - The defense got ripped up too easily, allowing 429 yards per game. However, there was plenty of bending without a ton of breaking, giving up 23 points or fewer seven times. The Eagles won all seven games.- Linebacker Marques Watson-Trent left for Nebraska after earning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year honors. Davon Hicks will be one of the leading tacklers in the middle of the corps after making 43 stops as a key backup. App State transfer Brendan Harrington is in his seventh season - he knows what he's doing. - The line has to get into the backfield more. Davion Rhodes did his part, finishing second on the team with six tackles for loss with three sacks at one edge spot. There will be a rotation for the other spot, with senior Jacob Ferguson the likely first one getting a tackles are really, really thin - in depth, not bodies. 360-pound Latrell Bullard is back on the nose, making 35 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss on the inside, joined by Georgia Tech's Uche Iloh. The pressure is on for those two to hold up and anchor the line. - There's a lot to like about the secondary, starting with safety Antonio White (Rutgers), a monster get from the transfer portal. Justin Meyers made 61 stops and should be a statistical star at strong safety. The corners are even better, with Chance Gamble an All-Sun Belt playmaker, who led the way with three picks. He and Tracy Hill combined for 84 stops. Georgia Southern Eagles Key to the Season The turnovers have to slow has to be more of a downfield passing game, the pass rush has to show up, and a third down stop would be nice, but turnovers continue to be a huge 2018 Eagles turned it over five times. The 2019 team turned it over 11 times. There were 17 turnovers in 2020 and 2021, 21 in 2022, and a whopping 31 in 2023. The 22 turnovers last year were an improvement, but there were still too many, closing the season with five in the bowl loss to Sam Houston. Georgia Southern Eagles Key Player Latter Bullard, DT Sr.A few untested 300+ pound redshirt freshmen will be a part of the rotation, meaning the 340-pound Bullard is the only experienced giant who can park it in the middle of the line. His main job, though, is to stay in one piece until the rest of the tackles can get up to speed. Georgia Southern Eagles Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Dylan Gary, WR Eagles need more downfield plays, and that's where Gary comes in. He started out at Kentucky, went to West Georgia, and last year caught 48 passes for 810 yards and nine touchdowns for the Wolves, including a 94-yard scoring Transfer Out: Marques Watson-Trent, LB a bit of a miracle the Eagles were able to hold on to him this long. A guided missile of a linebacker made 356 tackles and six sacks with 27 tackles for loss over the last three years. He'll be a monster for Nebraska. Georgia Southern Eagles Key Game at James Madison, Sept. 27The Dukes have been fantastic since moving up to the FBS level, but Georgia Southern hasn't flinched. The Eagles won 45-38 in 2022, got whacked in 2023, and won at home last year the Sun Belt opener, and it's on the road. With away dates at Arkansas State, App State, and Marshall still to deal with, winning this matters.- 2025 Georgia Southern Schedule Breakdown Georgia Southern Eagles Top 10 Players 1. Chance Gamble, CB Sr.2. Pichon Wimbley, OG Sr.3. Caleb Cook, OG Sr.4. Davion Rhodes, EDGE Sr.5. Justin Meyers, S Sr.6. Josh Dallas, WR Jr.7. Antonio White, S RFr.8. JC French, QB Jr.9. Dylan Gary, WR Jr.10. River Helms, TE Sr. Georgia Southern Eagles 2024 Fun Stats - Penalties: Opponents 110 for 1,007 yards, Georgia Southern 73 for 628 yards- Fumbles: Georgia Southern 22 (lost 11), Opponents 16 (lost 6)- 4th Quarter Scoring: Georgia Southern 116, Opponents 75 Georgia Southern Eagles 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen Every Sun Belt game is a 50/50 Southern was good enough to beat Marshall and James Madison last year, but lost to Old Dominion and a mediocre Troy squad. This year's version will be like that again.A fourth straight bowl and seventh in eight seasons are a given, but every game will be a fight. On the plus side, though, not playing Louisiana, South Alabama, or Texas State is huge this season. There's too much experience not to be in the Sun Belt race until late, but not having a home game for a month over the second half of the season will make it The Georgia Southern Eagles Win Total At … 6.5Likely Wins: Jacksonville State, Maine50/50 Games: at App State, at Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, at James Madison, at Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern MissLikely Losses: at Fresno State, at USC © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc.
