Truck Norris and Adam Sand-ler aren't celebs, they're Labrador City's new snowplows
In Labrador City, you now might hear someone say "there goes Truck Norris," or "look, it's Adam Sand-ler."
Kids from the town were given a chance to name five new snowplows in a recent contest.
The names Ctrl-Salt-Delete, Plowabunga and Winter Warrior were also among the winners.
The town's safety manager, Wayne Power, says he jumped on the opportunity after seeing other municipalities hold similar contests.
Labrador City ended with over 3,500 entries from children between four and 12 years old.
"I got to be honest, the creativity, the enthusiasm and the efforts that were made by the kids spoke for itself," said Power.
In the coming days, Power said the winning names will be printed on the trucks for the whole town to see.
He said he and his staff went through all of the entry forms.
Once they had the list down to 30 entries, they posted it in the public works' break room. All 35 employees weighed in by checking off their favourites, and the final five were selected.
Kaylee Marsh came out on top by winning the first two spots with her suggestions Truck Norris and Ctrl-Salt-Delete.
"Overall, it was amazing. The kids today enjoyed it, I got to say, and I'll be honest, we enjoyed it as well," said Power
The winners got toy Tonka trucks and gift cards as their awards.
And the town will be going through the process again in the summertime, as they'll have new pieces of equipment to name. But those names will be decided by the town's seniors.
"We'll have the contest and we'll bring them inside and then and we'll present them with their awards. So we're looking forward to that," said Power.
For Power, this was an opportunity to engage with the town's employees.
"Bringing something like this into a small community such as Labrador City was huge for the employees. They love it. It just increases the employee engagement here as well," said Power.

Japan's troubled automaker Nissan banks on hybrid EV technology
YOKOSUKA, Japan (AP) — Money-losing Japanese automaker Nissan is banking on its latest 'e-Power' technology for a turnaround. A kind of hybrid, e-Power comes equipped with both an electric motor and gasoline engine, much like the Toyota Motor Corp. Prius. It's different from a Prius in that it doesn't switch back and forth between the motor and engine during the drive. That means the car always is running on its EV battery, ensuring a quiet, smooth ride. 'Nissan has a proud history of pioneering innovative technology that set us apart,' Chief Technology Officer Eiichi Akashi told reporters on the sidelines of a test drive at its Grandrive course outside Tokyo. The advantage of e-Power vehicles is that they never need to be charged like EVs do. The owner just fuels up at a gas station and the car never runs out of a charge. Nissan Motor Corp., which racked up a $4.5 billion loss for the fiscal year through March, sorely needs a hot-seller, especially in the lucrative North American market. But the U.S. market is proving a big headache for all the Japanese automakers because of President Donald Trump's tariff policies. To achieve a turnaround, Nissan is working on reducing costs, strengthening business partnerships and redefining its lineup. That's where e-Power fits in, according to Akashi. Yokohama-based Nissan announced earlier this month that it's slashing about 15% of its global work force, or about 20,000 employees, and reducing the number of its auto plants to 10 from 17, under an ambitious recovery plan led by its new Chief Executive Ivan Espinosa. Nissan officials did not give a price for the upcoming e-Power models. The only other automaker offers a similar technology is 'kei,' or tiny car manufacturer Suzuki Motor Corp. E-Power is already offered on the Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail model in Europe, and the Note in Japan. The upgraded version will be offered in the new Rogue in the U.S. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. Nissan, a pioneer in EVs with its Leaf, which went on sale in 2010, is also preparing beefed up EV models. It's also working on a solid-state battery which is expected to replace the lithium-ion batteries now widely used in hybrids, EVs and e-Power models. Analysts say Nissan is in danger of running out of cash and needs a partner. Speculation is rife its Yokohama headquarters building will get sold, or one of its Japan plants will be turned into a casino. Nissan started talks last year with Japanese rival Honda Motor Co. for a business integration but announced in February that it was dropping the talks. ___ Yuri Kageyama is on Threads:

Josef Newgarden beats teammate Will Power in pit-stop challenge after tough week for Team Penske
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Josef Newgarden beat teammate Will Power in the finals of the Indianapolis 500 pit-stop challenge on Friday, giving the whole of Team Penske something to feel good about after a trying week leading up to 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.' Newgarden and Power will both start from the final row of the 33-car grid on Sunday after their cars were found to have a part that was illegal altered ahead of qualifying. But both of them had fast cars in the final 2-hour practice on Carb Day, and then they showed that their crews are just as fast in the annual competition on pit lane. In the decisive matchup, Newgarden's team stopped the clock in 10.263 seconds and Power in 10.503, giving the two-time Indy 500 winner his second consecutive pit-stop championship and Team Penske its 20th dating back to its first in 1981. 'These are the unsung heroes of this race. They're risking it every time we're coming in,' said Newgarden, who will start 32nd on Sunday as he chases an unprecedented three-peat. 'It's not easy to do this job. They work on their cars all day, all night, and then they have to come out and perform in these moments, and they have to perform on Sunday.' The pit-stop title was the third overall for Newgarden, putting him in a tie with Al Unser Jr. for fourth-most by any driver. 'It helps you win the Indy 500,' he said of the quick pit stops. 'Everything has to be perfect and this is a big part of it.' Newgarden, whose team won $50,000, beat Pato O'Ward of Arrow McLaren in the semifinals in a rematch of last year's head-to-head final. Power won his semifinal matchup with Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon, whose team won two years ago. 'After the week we've had, all three cars are ready to go out there and take this win,' said Caitlyn Brown, one of the Team Penske crew members on Newgarden's car, who two years ago became the first female over-the-wall crew member at the Indy 500. 'Winning this competition only powers us to go out there and take it,' she said. 'Starting from the back doesn't mean anything.' Final practice Newgarden's team also had reason to celebrate after the final 2-hour practice session, when the No. 2 car had the fastest lap at 225.687 mph. Takuma Sato was second, Dixon third, Devlin Defrancesco fourth and Power fifth. It was a strong showing overall by Team Penske, which is trying to give team owner Roger Penske his 21st race win. 'As far as the engine goes, we were all good,' said Power, who will start 33rd. 'The track changed and the wind changed, which will be different again on race day. Probably some minor changes to the car and then go.' Sato, who will start in the middle of the front row, had mechanical problems near the end of practice. Other contenders also had trouble, including Ryan Hunter-Reay, who was eighth-quickest before fire erupted from the back of his car. 'Not a big fire,' he said. 'It didn't look like it caused a lot of damage.' Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Award winners Earlier in the day, Chip Ganassi Racing manager Barry Wanser and broadcast statistician Russ Thompson were given the Robin Miller Award, which honors unheralded people who have devoted a significant portion of their lives to IndyCar. The award is named after Miller, a longtime motorsports writer who died in 2021. Pat Caporali, the lead communications representative for tiremaker Firestone, was given the Jim Chapman Award for excellence in public relations. Chapman was a legendary PR executive who worked with Babe Ruth, among others. ___ AP auto racing:

Team Penske focused on moving forward after shock firings following Indy 500 cheating scandal
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Roger Penske personally told Will Power about the firings of Team Penske's top three executives — a decision Power said his boss made after a sleepless night contemplating how to handle a cheating scandal ahead of the Indianapolis 500. 'I know it was very tough for him. He said that. He said he didn't sleep the night before because he had to make a very hard decision,' Power said Thursday, one day after the shock dismissals of team president Tim Cindric, IndyCar managing director Ron Ruzewski and IndyCar general manager Kyle Moyer. Penske cleaned house after the cars for both Power and two-time defending Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden failed inspection ahead of Sunday's final round of qualifying. The cars were found to have modified a spec part — the rear attenuator is a safety part and IndyCar said it has found no evidence the Team Penske filling a seam on it provided a competitive advantage. But, it was the second major technical violation for Team Penske in just over a year. The team last year was found to have illegal access to its push-to-pass system at times the drivers should not have been able to gain the additional boost of horsepower. Newgarden was stripped of last year's season-opening victory once IndyCar discovered the team was illegally using the software. Power expressed sympathy for Penske, who owns the three-car race team, IndyCar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. Penske confirmed to new television partner Fox Sports that IndyCar is exploring an independent governing body that does not consist of Penske employees. 'I feel bad for him. He's in a very tough spot in that situation,' Power said of Penske. 'You could tell it was heavy on him. Tough, tough for him to have to do that. I think Roger moves forward very quickly. He makes decisions. He moves forward. Doesn't dwell on it. 'Starts looking at what is absolutely best for the team and everyone to move forward. That's Roger. That's why he's so successful,' Power continued. 'He's not going to sit and spend a month worrying about what happened. I think he's 'How can we fix this and let's move forward and make sure it doesn't happen again.'' Team Penske earlier Thursday announced the personnel that has been adjusted for its three cars ahead of Sunday's 109th running of 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.' Penske has won the race a record 20 times. Newgarden, who is trying to become the first driver to win three consecutive Indy 500s, will have Luke Mason as his strategist and Raul Prados as lead engineer. As part of the penalties levied on the team, he was dropped to 32nd on the starting grid and no driver has ever won from the last row. Scott McLaughlin, who crashed early Sunday and didn't participate in the final rounds of qualifying, will start from 12th with Ben Bretzman as his strategist and Malcolm Finch as lead engineer. Power, who is in the final year of his contract at Penske and was dropped to last in the 33-car field, will have Jonathan Diuguid as strategist and David Faustino as lead engineer. He believes Penske was forced into the firings by the external pressure from other team owners who are furious Team Penske has had major technical violations in two consecutive seasons. He also said the attenuator modification gave him no advantage and felt good people lost their jobs over the incident. Cindric had been with Penske since 2000. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'It's kind of a shock and a pity. They're all extremely good at their job,' Power said. 'It was just the pressure from outside. I guess Roger had to make a tough decision, but I can tell you these were very credible people. They really were. As you know, the infraction was very minor. It wasn't a performance gain.' Cindric posted on social media late Wednesday calling his time with Penske 'an amazing ride!' 'While my conscious remains clear through all of the noise and accusations, I'm grateful to have so many great people to draw strength from in times like this,' Cindric wrote. 'Still standing tall!' ___ AP auto racing:
