Chance for scattered showers through Saturday as western Mass. approaches record May rainfall
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts has finally seen some nice weather the past few days after a very wet start to the month.
The start of May was nothing but cloudy and wet, with lots of rain falling on western Massachusetts. In the first 10 days of the month, Westover Airbase received 3.6 inches of rain, which is 0.1 inches of rain below the monthly average of 3.7 inches. Some areas in western Massachusetts, such as Conway, saw almost 6 inches of rain.

This is no surprise, though, as spring and summer seasons continue to get wetter. According to Climate Central, the rainfall intensity for Springfield between 1970 to 2024 is up by 13 percent. The climate continues to warm, which allows the atmosphere to hold more moisture, which is contributing to more rain in our region.
More rain is expected later this week.

Hydrant flushing to begin in Greenfield this week
GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Greenfield is alerting residents to hydrant flushing that will take place throughout the week. Starting Monday, crews will begin flushing hydrants from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day throughout this week and into next week. Residents should be aware that their tap water may be slightly discolored in the afternoon when their neighborhood hydrants are affected, and are encouraged to run the water to clear it prior to drinking it or doing laundry. This maintenance is set to take place to ensure that high-quality water is running through the city by removing any sediment from rusting pipe work and water main breaks. Additionally, officials stated that all hydrants in the city will be flushed, which helps identify any malfunctioning hydrants so that they can be repaired ahead of potential emergencies. Sidewalks to close Monday for repairs in Pittsfield
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Several sidewalks in Pittsfield will be closed to pedestrians starting on Monday as crews conduct repair work. LIST: Ironman triathlon to cause weekend road closures City officials shared that numerous asphalt sidewalks will be replaced with concrete beginning on Monday, with work taking place across the next four weeks. The following sidewalks will begin undergoing repair work this week: North side of Columbus Avenue from Robbins Avenue to Francis Avenue North side of Summer Street from Francis Avenue to Center Street South side of Union Street from Francis Avenue to Union Street South side of Bradford Street from Francis Avenue to Center Street North side of Bradford Street from Center Street to North Street While repairs are taking place, these sidewalks will be closed for pedestrian use. Those walking in the area will be able to use the sidewalks on the alternate side of the street. These repairs are funded through the Community Development Block Grant. All work is weather-dependent and subject to change. Chicopee Mayor Vieau wins trophy at Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Spirit of Springfield Golf Classic teed off Friday morning from Franconia Golf Course in Springfield. The day kicked off with the mayors of Springfield, West Springfield, Agawam, Westfield and Chicopee all taking part in the coveted Mayor's Cup. Each mayor had three short putts to make. For each one they made, they got to take a second shot at a long putt. Closest ball wins.
