JOHOR BARU: Johor's tourism industry is bracing for a surge in visitors with the school holiday period being observed in Malaysia and Singapore.
Local industry players said they are gearing up for a much-anticipated travel wave from across the Causeway.
Desaru Fruit Farm director Steve Er Wee Heng said the tourism industry in Johor is experiencing good times again with both local and international visitors.
'With Malaysia and Singapore having school holidays now, we expect to see many visitors at the farm,' he said.
Er said many hotels operating in Desaru, which is about 75km from here, were highly booked due to the school holidays in both countries.
'We expect June to be a busy month for us, especially from the second week, as Desaru has become a popular getaway for both Malaysian and Singaporean holidaymakers with many attractions in the area,' he added.
Er said there are many activities at the farm for the family to enjoy, from tasting various tropical fruits to seeing its many animals.
Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo confirmed the high volume of hotel bookings in the state.
'Besides hotels in Johor Baru, those in other areas in the state such as Desaru and even Mersing are experiencing a surge in bookings.
'Singaporeans remain the bulk of foreign visitors but we are also seeing visitors from Japan, South Korea and China coming over.'
State unity, heritage and culture committee chairman K. Raven Kumar said about 80% of hotel rooms throughout Johor were already booked due to the school holidays.
He said that the strong bookings reflect the growing global interest in Johor as a travel destination.
'This is not just a school holiday phenomenon because even on regular weekends, we have recorded impressive numbers, particularly around Johor Baru.
'Other areas like Mersing are also seeing an increase in visitor traffic,' he said.
The school holidays in Malaysia started on Thursday and will last until June 9, while Singapore school holidays are from today till June 29.

Malaysian disabled pilgrims receive essential support during haj

MECCA: Disabled pilgrims from Malaysia could perform essential haj rituals with the assistance of companions provided, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He said this during his visit to Malaysian pilgrims' tents on the plains of Mount Arafat on Thursday (June 5). About 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims are currently among two million pilgrims performing the Wukuf at Arafat (stopping at the plains of Mount Arafat), the most important ritual of the haj. "I had the opportunity to visit the tent housing pilgrims under the Prihatin Tetamu Ar-Rahman (Peneman) programme. "38 personnel (27 women, 11 men) from Tabung Haji were entrusted with managing the selected Malaysian pilgrim's needs throughout the Masyair phase of haj (from 8 to 12 of Zulhijjah in the Islamic calendar)', said Mohd Na'im. He explained that selected pilgrims consist of the elderly, those who need assistance and those who are without a companion. He added that the pilgrims selected for the programme have gone through several screenings and interviews conducted by Tabung Haji. "Thank you to the Peneman officers for sacrificing their time and energy to ensure that all the infirm pilgrims can complete their haj," said Mohd Na'im. He stated that most of the pilgrims were doing well and were either resting or performing voluntary acts of worship while waiting for the time of wukuf, which was a few hours away. "The journey to Arafat yesterday went very smoothly. "The pilgrims are generally satisfied and relieved to have arrived in Arafat and are ready to perform the haj rituals: wukuf, overnight stay in Muzdalifah and stoning of the Jamrat," said Mohd Na'im. Mohd Na'im would also be presenting the Arafah sermon of Malaysia during the noon prayers.

A tougher challenge now awaits the Malaysian husband-and-wife team, who have booked a last-eight clash with Thailand's world No 6 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran tomorrow. Dechapol-Supissara have been in strong form at all the BWF tournaments this year. Singaporeans rush for VEP ahead of July 1, Johor trade unfazed

JOHOR BARU: With full Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) enforcement taking effect on July 1, Singaporean motorists are making a last-minute dash to register at centres in Johor. A check by the New Straits Times at the VEP centre in Danga Bay yesterday found Singaporeans flocking to submit last-minute applications. One staff member said there had been many walk-ins asking whether the RFID tags could be issued immediately. Some frustrated motorists, uncertain about the registration process or still waiting for their tags to arrive by post, voiced concern over the sudden rush. The VEP scheme was first proposed in 2017 but its implementation was postponed twice — in 2019 and again in 2020. Drivers of non-Malaysian-registered vehicles found without a valid VEP from next month risk a fine of RM300. The RFID tag enables Malaysian authorities to identify foreign-registered vehicles on the roads and track any outstanding traffic fines, which must be settled before the vehicles are allowed to leave the country. Meanwhile, businesses in the main commercial belts of Johor's capital expressed confidence that the VEP enforcement would not deter their regular Singaporean customers. Malaysian Tourist Guides Council president Jimmy Leong said he did not expect the tourism industry to be affected. "Motorists were given ample notice and access to VEP installation centres," he said. Traders in Johor echoed Leong's remarks, adding that the new ruling would not discourage Singaporeans who consider Malaysia a haven for food and shopping. They also pointed out that the strong Singapore dollar continues to give Singaporeans greater spending power in Malaysia, making it an attractive destination for a day trip across the Causeway that divides the two countries. "Singaporeans will still come — RM300 is just a mild sting. For them, S$90 (RM300) is nothing," said Jamil, who manages a seafood eatery. A convenience store owner, known only as Tan, said her Singaporean customers were fully aware of the fines. "One of them told me, 'I'll just pay the compound on the way out (of Johor) if I have to,'" she said.
