BBC News10-04-2025

Children from a displaced community are learning about their culture and identity at a Sunday school with a difference in Malvern. The Ukrainian children, who were born in England, play football before they go to afternoon classes to learn about the country their families are from.Organiser Natalia Kuchmak, who fled the war in Ukraine, co-founded the Talented Ukrainian Children in Malvern school. At last Sunday's match, she said: "It's good weather, it's a very good feeling, it's a very good sport. After three o clock, we'll start school in Ukrainian geography and history, with free lessons and Ukrainian food."
She said the football kept children active and helped bring the community together to learn about their heritage.
'Important to learn'
Vita Piddubna, a history teacher and parent, explained why it was important and said: "Our children have to know their motherland and the history of Ukraine."They have to know their language, their Ukrainian literature, famous poets, writers. "It is very important for us."
One girl taking part, Karolina, 10, said: "We've got war in our country right now and we've moved to a different one. Now we have a different language."It can be quite frustrating and it's very important to just have a little part of yourself and learn all about the different things in Ukraine."One of the boys, Vova, 12, said it was "really good for communication", and another girl, Polina, 11, said she enjoyed speaking Ukrainian and doing work that was not in English.About 50 children are learning literature, art, music, dance, geography and history at the Sunday school, which is part of the Malvern branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

Oleksandr Usyk shows true colours by admitting one fighter is better than him

The Ukrainian is widely regarded as one of the best fighters of his generation - but has surprisingly named the one fighter who is currently better than him Oleksandr Usyk has admitted Terence Crawford is the current pound-for-pound No.1 in the sport. The Ukrainian is widely regarded as one of the best heavyweight boxers of this generation. Prior to making his professional debut, it was evident that the 38-year-old was destined for big things in the sport after winning the World Championships in 2011 before winning Olympic gold a year later in London. ‌ In 2013, Usyk finally turned pro and was quick to become a real household name in the sport. Within three years, the Ukrainian was already a world champion. That said, he was hungry for more. Five years after turning pro, the 'Cat' became an undisputed cruiserweight champion defeating Murat Gassiev on points. ‌ Usyk made the decision to move up to heavyweight in 2019 and scored impressive victories over Chazz Witherspoon and Derek Chisora. In just his third fight at the aforementioned weight class, he became a world champion after defeating Anthony Joshua. He then beat the Brit for a second time before defeating Daniel Dubois. Last May, the 38-year-old became a two-division undisputed champion after beating Tyson Fury on points. The Ukrainian would go on to beat the 'Gypsy King' for a second time back in December. Despite his accomplishments, Usyk was quick to praise Crawford, telling DAZN: 'For me, pound-for-pound No.1 is Terence Crawford. I like this man, he's a great fighter. For me, maybe I'm No. 17.' Usyk's comments showed his real colours - proving that he really is all class both in and outside of the ring. Crawford won all the titles at super-lightweight before repeating the breathtaking achievement at welterweight in July 2023 when he toppled Errol Spence. He has since moved up again to claim another title at 154lbs and, in September, he faces the toughest test of his glittering career so far. On September 13, he will take on Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super-middleweight titles. Crawford will be looking to keep his perfect record intact, but faces a tough ask against the multi-weight ruler. As for Usyk, the Ukrainian is preparing for his return to competitive action. The 38-year-old is scheduled to rematch Dubois next month at Wembley Stadium for the undisputed heavyweight world titles. The pair first met back in 2023 - with the Ukrainian going on to stop the Brit towards the back end of the contest. However, the fight was not without drama after Usyk was sent crashing to the canvas following a shot to the body that was eventually deemed a low blow - much to the frustration of Dubois' team.

Paris Saint-Germain edge closer to deal for £60m Bournemouth star as Champions League winners look to bolster their defence

Bournemouth are continuing talks with Paris St Germain over the £60million sale of centre back Ilya Zabarnyi who has been offered a five-year contract by the European champions. The Champions League winners are seeking to tie up a move for the Cherries defender after he agreed personal terms. Interest from the Ligue 1 side came following a string of impressive performances for Andoni Iraola's side last season. The Ukrainian international, who moved to the south coast from Dynamo Kyiv in 2023, is just one of a number of players who looks set to leave the club this summer. His former defensive partner Dean Huijsen has left for Real Madrid after the Spanish giants activated his £50million release clause. Meanwhile, Milos Kerkez could join Premier League champions Liverpool, although Bournemouth are standing firm with their valuation of £45million but could do a deal for around £40million. A potential move by the Reds to strengthen at left back follows interest from Atletico Madrid in signing Andy Robertson. Kerkez is widely expected to join Arne Slot's side, along with the impending move for Florian Wirtz in what will be a club record deal. The Cherries' defender moving to Anfield could well spell the end for Kostas Tsimikas this summer as Liverpool juggle on the left of defence. Robertson only delivered one assist in the Premier League last season in 33 games and made some uncharacteristic errors. Kerkez, meanwhile, was a standout for his side and delivered five for Andoni Iraola's men - netting twice himself.

Plans for a second pump cycling track in Worcester are due to be discussed by councillors this popularity of the first one, in Battenhall Park, prompted the city council to draw up plans for a second, larger tracks are made up of hills and banked turns and are designed to be ridden by cyclists who generate momentum by using up and down movements, instead of pedaling or new facility at Perdiswell would feature two separate tracks, one for experienced users and another for children under the age of eight. Councillors are due to look at the plans at a meeting on 23 June, with a report which notes a shortage of play facilities in the north of the cityHannah Cooper, vice chair of the Place and Economic Development Committee, said: "The popularity of the smaller pump track in Battenhall Park shows what a popular sport this is, and that there is strong demand for another track in the city."The new track would cost £150,000, if approved.
