Tips for flying with kids: Advice to make your family flight easier
Learn how to have stress-free air travel with tips for flying with kids.
Yvette Henry was in her kitchen fixing up dinner. So were all four of her kids.
'Ya'll, we have almost 4,000 square feet here and you're all right here. Right here,' she said on the "How Married Are You?!" podcast that she hosts with her husband, Glen Henry.
But then she remembered a TikTok video about 'living room kids' and 'bedroom kids,' and realized she and her husband had built a home dynamic where their children felt emotionally safe in shared spaces.
'I don't think that I always appreciate what I have in this situation,' Henry said in the podcast clip that hit nearly 1 million views on TikTok and was posted elsewhere on social media. 'Like the gift of all this togetherness that we are going to look back on one day and say, 'oh my gosh, I miss that.''
'Living room kids' and 'bedroom kids' are not terms established by behavioral science but have gained popularity online as parenting influencers talk about their household dynamics and their own past upbringings.
A living room kid refers to a child who spends much of their home time in shared spaces such as the living room, kitchen or dining room. A bedroom kid refers to a child who spends most of their free time in the privacy of their bedroom. No matter what kind of person you are, if you're a parent, pay attention to your children's needs and what rooms they gravitate to. There's nothing inherently wrong with either.
Although it might result in more messes, parents should feel proud knowing that living room kids feel comfortable and safe when congregating with family, said Whitney Raglin Bignall, associate clinical director of the Kid's Mental Health Foundation, a nonprofit promoting children's mental health.
'Safety could play a role,' she said. If there's a lot of family conflict, a child might spend more time in their room to avoid that stressor.
'The Giving Tree': This author 'fixed' it with a new ending. Some say it's long overdue.
Why some kids prefer living rooms over bedrooms
It's not just about safety, Raglin Bignall said. There are other factors at play, such as culture, age and personality.
Some children are naturally more introverted than others, she said. Other children prefer quiet and solitary activities, like reading. Families may designate specific playrooms for children and adult spaces for parents to unwind.
Children also tend to spend more time in their rooms as they enter their pre-teen and teenage years, said Dr. Thomas Priolo, a child psychiatrist at Hackensack Meridian Health.
"A teenager will want to be more independent and feel responsible for themselves, and having a space for themselves in their room allows them to take control," he said. "As children get older, it becomes more important and more of a conscious decision."
The time children spend in their room may also depend on the time of year, Priolo said. During the school year, kids are more socially stimulated by school and extracurricular activities, so they may want more time to unwind in their room alone.
Why it's OK to be a 'bedroom parent'
It's not necessarily a bad thing for children to spend more time in their bedroom, but he said parents should be wary if an ordinarily "living room" kid suddenly starts isolating in their room. This could be a sign that there's something wrong.
"Rather than viewing it as 'living room' versus 'bedroom kids,' the best way to view it is as a house and making sure that kids feel safe no matter where they are," Priolo said.
Riglin Bignall also reminds parents that having 'living room kids' can sometimes be overwhelming. It's OK to be a 'bedroom parent' every once in a while to recharge.
'Everyone needs breaks. You can't have people around you all the time,' Riglin Bignall said. 'It's great to have communal and family time and build family belonging but it's also important to think about when are you making sure you have time to fill your cup.'

A cult-favorite Creamy Coconut fragrance rollerball reviewers compare to the pricey Sol de Janeiro version. 👀☀️ This is from TikTok-famous small business brand Kuumba Made, known for its luxury scents at ridiculously affordable prices, so you know they're on their game — reviewers especially love how ~beachy~ and long-lasting this sweet but elevated fragrance feels and how nicely it plays with other scents! A set of DEET-free handy mosquito-repelling bracelets for the ultimate in genius summer investments — these use essential oils, including citronella, to help stop those teensy vampires in their tracks. E.l.f.'s Squeeze Me More Lip Balm Duo with some real "Laneige, but make it cheap" energy. This mango and watermelon duo is actually the oh-so-tropical remix of the brand's wildly beloved Squeeze Me More Lip Balm that came out last year, so reviewers are already obsessed with how lightweight, hydrating, and deeelicious these go-to balms are. A super popular Slammo game set you should only buy if you're prepared for HOURS worth of showdowns in the backyard at every party and family hang you throw from now until eternity. This compact, super portable net ball bouncing game has all the same energy as volleyball, but without taking up nearly as much space. Jergens Natural Glow Firming Self Tanner Body Lotion to give you a gradual-building, vacation-worthy ~sunkissed glow~ over the course of just a few days. Not only is this easy peasy to apply compared to other finickier, streaking lotions, but it's formulated with collagen and elastin to help your skin appear firmer *and* glowier, and a HECK of a lot cheaper than its competitors. A truly talented cooling towel you can use to prevent yourself from overheating — all you have to do is wet this to make it deliciously chilly for your neck or head. Once it warms up, you can wet it again to instantly get back the chill! And Hawaiian Tropic's SPF 30 Mineral Powder Sunscreen Brush, aka your scalp's BFF this summer — reviewers don't just swear by this for face coverage and a protective setting powder, but for protecting their hairline without their hair getting goopy from sunscreen scalp sprays or regular sunscreen lotion. Bonus — this is a heck of a lot cheaper than its competitors, like the $35 Supergoop and $36 Brush On Block! A set of espresso martini instant cocktail tea bags — all the sophistication of tea, the zing! of coffee, and the 😜 of a cheeky cocktail, without the exorbitant bar price tags. An affordable, Lululemon-esque longline sports bra so comfy, supportive, and versatile that reviewers love it both for outdoor workouts, gym use, *and* errand running. This is designed to be supportive without being too compressive, with lightweight fabric that keeps you breezy in the heat. I am a massive fan of both — the moisturizing clean is so fresh, and the scents are so DELIGHTFULLY luscious without overpowering — but trust me when I say that Wild Iris Musk is *the* warm weather scent. It's floral, soft, playful, and grounded all at once. (And yes, just like the original version, it smells ... expensive 👀.) Lancôme Juicy Tubes — that's right, the iconic lippies from the 2000s are BACK and juicier than ever!! Summer Fridays and Laneige better show some respect to their elders, because these are so high gloss, hydrating, long-lasting, and the *chef's kiss* perfect amount of sticky that they remain the reigning queens. Liquid I.V. electrolyte drink mix, so you have extra incentive to hit your hydration goals on blazing hot trips *and* you can relive the glory of chasing down the ice cream truck as a kid. Reviewers are genuinely stunned by how much this tastes like the ~real thing~. A beach towel clip you can attach to a beach chair to stop it from blowing away while you're off gallivanting in the ocean trying to make friends with a mermaid. Reviewers also love this for building blanket forts, holding down tablecloths, and hanging wet items like suits and towels at the end of a long beach day. A truly miraculous sand-free beach blanket that repels sand and dirt so easily that you'll wonder if someone cast a spell on it. Parents especially love this because babies and toddlers can lay on it without getting sand in their mouths, and it's ridiculously easy to repack without worrying about taking half the sand in the beach from with you. Oh, and it's also GINORMOUS. (And packs up super small!) And a reusable, family-friendly sand eraser to *instantly* remove sand from your skin with a quick swipe so you don't accidentally turn your unsuspecting car interiors into "Beach, Part Two." It's so portable that you can easily tuck it into a tote bag on your way to a park or pool hang, and so waterproof that reviewers even keep it in the shower! A roll-up wide brim UPF 50 sun hat to protect your cheeks from the sun's rays *and* keep you looking effortlessly chic no matter how many days it's been since your last hair wash. This one is a real winner because of how absurdly packable it is, making it perfect for shoving into a tote bag on long days and a suitcase on vacation — and how affordable it is compared to $87+ versions from brands like Bloomingdale's, Wallaroo, and Cuyana. A portable Chill-O-Matic Instant Beverage Cooler, aka every finicky cold bevvy drinker's DREAM. This gadget can take a 12-ounce can of seltzer, soda, or beer at room temperature and make it ice cold in just one minute. A lot of people who complain that their fridge doesn't make drinks "cold enough" also swear by this for an extra icy kick. A set of flower petal dessert glasses so you can serve up little puddings, ice creams, and yogurt parfaits and decorate them with edible flowers for your Meghan Markle era. 🌸 Reviewers also use these for cocktails and juice! ‘I want to take you to a workout class': Influencers are turning brand trips into exclusive real-life fan experiences

Rather than sitting at home watching your favorite influencer unbox gifts from their all-expenses-paid brand trip, now the rest of us have a chance to feel like an influencer for a day. Last week, Brandon Edelman, the same TikTok creator who recently went viral for sharing his $768,000-a-year salary, launched his very own 'Bran Trip,' his version of the ubiquitous influencer brand trip. Attendees were chosen via video application using the hashtag #thebrantrip. Three of Edelman's lucky followers and their plus-ones were then transported to their own suites at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia for the weekend. The trip included tickets to a Phillies game, facials, and an IV lounge for recovery from the night before. @bran__flakezz I AM SO EXCITED #thebrantrip @Lindsay Anderson @carter @Tierra Mo'ney @Jocelyn Vargas @Drink Poppi @Beis Travel @GarnierUSA @Ferko's Fine Jewelry @Shark Beauty @Coastal Caviar @EVRY JEWELS @@KIND Snacks @TOPICALS ♬ original sound – bran_flakezz Of course, it wouldn't be an influencer-hosted trip without gifting from 30 different brands. This included gifted outfits from Abercrombie & Fitch, initial necklaces from Ferko's (a Westchester-based fine jewelry company), a $349 CryoGlow LED mask from Shark, and Béis luggage to get their goodies back home, Edelman told Glossy. @bran__flakezz #thebrantrip DAY ONE SETUP!! @UrInternetBF @Lindsay Anderson @Eli Rallo @corinna carter @Tierra Mo'ney @tykiadee @Jocelyn Vargas @Alexandria @Olivia Palacio #philly #philadelphia ♬ original sound – Penny B Hollywood While influencer fan meetups are nothing new, these events have evolved from the thousands-strong gatherings of the 2010s, where excited fans queued for hours for a quick hug and a selfie with their favorite influencer. Now, influencers are inviting followers in and building community in intimate settings that align with their personal brands. 'Just like some influencers have been taking their followers out for dinner, I want to take you to a workout class,' New York-based influencer Danielle Pheloung posted in April. The next month, Pheloung hosted 25 girls at the heated workout studio Fuze House in Tribeca. The event was on-brand for Pheloung, with early morning workouts a staple in her videos. After the free class, each attendee left with a bag full of items gifted by some of Pheloung's favorite brands including Smart Sweets, Lancôme, and Ouai. @daniellephe Such a special day! Cant wait to do more of these🥹🤍 ♬ evergreen – favsoundds These fan meetups are part of a larger shift in the creator economy and beyond, from online to offline. 'For years, creators chased virality online, but these days, influence is about access, not scale,' Casey Lewis, writer of After School, a newsletter about youth consumer trends, wrote in a recent Substack post. 'Follower count matters less than who actually shows up.' Often dubbed the 'loneliest generation,' Gen Z has figured out that the secret to making friends is organizing their own third spaces and meetups. According to a new study from Eventbrite, 95% of Gen Z and Millennials are interested in turning online interests into real-world interactions. Brands are noticing this shift, and platforms are stepping in to help facilitate meaningful community marketing opportunities. Last month, the youth research firm dcdx launched Offline, a platform connecting brands with real-life communities to co-host and sponsor events ranging from micro-community activations for dozens to meetups of hundreds. As Offline founder Andrew Roth told Forbes: 'Just as the Influencer rose to fame, so will the Host.'

Kosas Founder Sheena Zadeh Used to Be a Bug Taxonomist

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. In ELLE's series Office Hours, we ask people in powerful positions to take us through their first jobs, worst jobs, and everything in between. This month, we're catching up with Sheena Zadeh, the founder of Kosas. Launched in 2015, Kosas has quickly become the quintessential It-girl beauty brand, with a no-makeup makeup aesthetic that's made it a staple in Hailey Bieber's routine and a favorite of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow. You've probably seen the colorful, playful products on TikTok, where it seems that every new Kosas launch goes viral. Because of Kosas, and products like their Revealer Concealer, skin care-infused makeup has never been cooler, and Zadeh loves to see it: 'I wanted to start a movement,' she says. Before starting her beauty brand, Zadeh had a brief stint in the STEM world. She was a biology major in college, and spent time working in taxonomy, classifying different bugs. Though she never became a biologist, Zadeh's background comes in handy when she's working on Kosas's science-driven products. Below, Zadeh opens up about creating her own company, how social media plays into her brand strategy, and why she feels like Kosas was always her destiny. My first job I've had a million jobs in my life. The first thing I did when I got a car was drive to the car wash and be like, 'Can I have a job?' My first job was working there as the cashier. My worst job I had one job in the science universe, in a factory, [doing] bug taxonomy. [The factory set] all these bug traps and inside would be bags of dead bugs. For eight hours a day, I would look at the dead bugs under a microscope and identify them. It was weird, because I was just alone with bugs. My best job Kosas, by far. The whole brand is so representative of who I am and an honest expression of me. The privilege of being able to express myself every single day—that's what I ultimately always dreamed of. Why I started Kosas I saw very clearly that this brand would exist. I felt like it was driven by a destiny. It was blaring and loud. I could hear it in my head. I had a mastery in three areas that were going to come together—[science, psychology, and art]. I had a really specific philosophy around [combining] the scientific nature of makeup creation with the internal and external experience of what beauty means from a psychological perspective. I wanted to bring to life a new wave of ways to create makeup, [one that was] clean but also really good for your skin. I also had a deep love of art. Notice what you do when no one's looking. [Pay attention to] what you like and what you're driven towards in your free time. That's a big clue as to where your passions and talents lie. Anytime anyone ever says, 'That's just the way that it's done.' That, to me, is not advice. That's when you should actually run away screaming. [If someone says that to me,] I'm like, Gotta go, bye. It is not a reason. That's exactly why you shouldn't do it [that way] anymore. Social media has become an amazing tool, and made it possible for me to even have this brand. I love that anyone can go on [TikTok] and start talking. That's the beauty of it. There's no gatekeeping. There's nothing blocking you. [In the past,] you'd have to take out a massive ad campaign or have a counter in a department store. It's really created a level playing field in getting your message out there, and that's what I love it for. But we don't make any brand decisions through the lens of social media at all. The brand is the brand. It's extremely important that every decision we make goes through the brand lens. At first, you only need one thread [of an idea], because vision can sometimes be a circular, spiraling process. That one thread then creates the spiral, and more will be unfolded as you pull on that thread, and then the next one, the next one, and the one after that. There does not need to be pressure, from the first moment, to have a totally clear vision that goes infinitely into the future. What you do need is one thread to pull at, and the openness to allow that spiral to unfold. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
