[UPDATED] PM yet to accept Nik Nazmi's resignation, giving him time

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said there was no need to rush a decision on Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad's resignation from the cabinet, as he was still on leave.
"Nik Nazmi's status has not yet been decided," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Energy Asia forum in Kuala Lumpur.
"I always give (people) a chance to reflect, and then I'll give my views," Anwar said, adding that if Nik Nazmi wanted to continue serving, he could do so.
"But he is still on leave, so let's give him space."
Nik Nazmi, the Setiawangsa member of parliament, previously resigned from the cabinet after failing to retain his PKR vice-presidency.
He was the only incumbent vice-president who did not retain his post.
Subsequently, Nik Nazmi denied rumours that he and other MPs who lost in the PKR elections would withdraw support for Anwar.
Nik Nazmi is on leave until July 3, and his resignation takes effect on July 4.

No need to dissolve Economy Ministry: PM

Published on: Monday, June 16, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 16, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ( pic ) has stressed that there is no necessity to dissolve the Economy Ministry and any new ministerial appointment will only be made at an appropriate time. Anwar explained that the Economy Ministry, which was formerly the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) under the Prime Minister's Department, was elevated to a full ministry during Pakatan Harapan's first administration. Advertisement 'There is no issue of a change (in ministerial structure). The structure is determined by the Cabinet and me, so for now, I don't see any need for a reshuffle,' he told reporters after officiating at Energy Asia 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. On the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), scheduled to be tabled in Parliament this July, Anwar said it is a collective responsibility of the Cabinet, with the Economy Ministry serving as the main secretariat. He added that various adjustments and reforms are underway in light of the changing economic landscape, including tariff revisions that are impacting key national projections. 'Last week, we also held a meeting to hear input from ministries on policy adjustments being introduced,' he said. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli tendered his resignation and went on leave, which ends today. On the resignation of Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Anwar said the matter has not been finalised as he wishes to allow time and space before making a decision. 'I usually wait, give them a chance. Reflect, consider, and I will give my view. If possible, I'd like him to continue his service; there's still time before his resignation takes effect,' he said. Nik Nazmi also tendered his resignation on May 28 and has gone on leave until July 3. When asked about the proposed adjustments involving RON95 petrol prices, Anwar reiterated that it will not affect 85 to 90 per cent of the population. He said the opposition's claims that people are suffering due to the subsidy rationalisation policy are nothing more than desperate political gimmicks aimed at creating a negative image of the government. Anwar said the government's move towards subsidy rationalisation is a critical step to ensure sufficient national resources are channelled effectively to benefit the lower-income group. "We want to have enough resources to help the poor, to enhance the quality of education and to provide better public services, including in healthcare," he said. The Prime Minister added that the government is committed to implementing the policy despite criticisms, as it forms part of broader economic reforms aimed at long-term fiscal sustainability. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rafizi clears out office, stands firm on resignation decision

"I went to the office for the last time yesterday and today for final matters, including clearing out the office." Rafizi expressed his gratitude to the five officers who assisted him in developing economic initiatives under the Economy Ministry. SHAH ALAM – Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli announced that Friday marked his final day entering the office to wrap up affairs and pack up, seemingly signalling that his decision to resign is final. He said he also took the opportunity to express gratitude to five officers who had helped him develop economic initiatives under the Economy Ministry. All five, he said, were policy officers whom he had personally convinced to leave their previous careers to contribute their services and expertise to his office. 'I went to the office for the last time yesterday and today (Friday) to complete final tasks, including packing up. 'From chillies to semiconductors, to the startup ecosystem, the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JSSEZ), the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the progressive wage policy, all the way to the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), they helped translate my ideas into implementable plans. Now, they will return to their respective fields,' he said in a Facebook post on Friday. Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said he was still giving time to the two ministers who had resigned to reconsider their decisions before officially leaving the Cabinet. The Prime Minister expressed that he would prefer if both Rafizi and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad rejoined his Cabinet. '...let them think about it... If possible, I would like them to rejoin (the Cabinet),' he said. 'I learned a lot from them, perhaps more than they learned from me. My thanks go to endocrinology specialist and University of Cambridge graduate Dr Azraai Bahari Nasruddin, who also holds an additional degree in Informatics from UCL. First-class honours. He worked in the UK for many years before returning to Malaysia in 2014. 'Next, Benjamin Quek, a graduate in banking and finance from Monash University with an MSc in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. Formerly a fund manager. Also, James Chai, best law student from the University of London and Master of Law from the University of Oxford, with first-class honours. He previously worked in the legal and tech sectors and is also a book author. 'Ismat Qayyum, a first-class graduate in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) from the London School of Economics (LSE), previously worked in the banking sector. And Haqimi Zamri, who holds a degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Nottingham. He had run a social enterprise from a young age,' he added.
