‘Still on a high': ‘F1: The Movie' is here — and Brad Pitt's loving the 197mph rush
LONDON, June 27 — Brad Pitt relished an 'extraordinary' experience of driving a Formula 1 car as F1: The Movie hit cinemas in Britain and other countries, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
The Hollywood star, who plays F1 driver Sonny Hayes in the blockbuster film, was recently given the chance to drive McLaren's 2023 car around Austin's Circuit of the Americas.
Pitt, 61, had plenty of driving experience — including behind the wheel of modified F2 cars — while filming the movie over the last two years, but was blown away by his first taste of an F1 car.
'Oh my God, what a rush,' Pitt said in a video on McLaren's social media channels. 'A lot bigger horse than I've been on.'
Pitt added on the Beyond the Grid podcast: 'I got to hit 197mph this week. I really wanted to hit 200. You know, it hurts me a little bit — three miles per hour short on the straight. This was at Austin.
'I've just never experienced anything that's just, more feeling of presence in my life. You're so focused, but you're not white-knuckling. You're just in this sublime groove. It is really extraordinary.
'I try to explain this feeling of downforce, and I fail every time because you try to say like a rollercoaster, but that's not even right, because you feel the fulcrum point underneath you — you're in it.
'I was in an aerobatic plane once, and it's the closest thing, but still this thing. This is such a unique feeling and an absolute high. I'm still on a high, I really am. I'm just still on a high.'
Pitt's fictional rookie team-mate Joshua Pearce is played by British actor Damson Idris. Filming took place across multiple races over the last two seasons, and F1 chiefs hope the movie will follow the popularity of Netflix's Drive To Survive series in cracking America.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is an executive producer on the movie directed by Joseph Kosinski and co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. F1: The Movie will be released in the United States on Friday.
Hamilton, 40, posted a picture of himself alongside Pitt as he reflected on the journey he had been on while making the film.
'Four years in the making — what a journey it's been,' Hamilton wrote on Instagram.
'I'm incredibly grateful to everyone at Apple and Warner Bros for believing in us and partnering with such heart and vision.
'To Joe and Jerry — thank you. I've learned so much from both of you, and it's truly been an honour to work alongside you.
'These were taken on our very first day on track, with Brad at Silverstone looking into Copse Corner. What a moment. One of those memories that stick with you.' — Bernama-PA Media/dpa

Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise reunite at 'F1' premiere in London
Brad Pitt (left) and Tom Cruise last worked together in the 1994 film 'Interview With A Vampire'. Photo: AP No, these are not Louis and Lestat out to have another go at each other's throats, but fans of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise were nonetheless delighted after the A-listers met at the London premiere of the former's film F1 , marking their first public reunion in over two decades. The reunion happened after the Mission: Impossible star made a surprise appearance at the movie premiere held at Leicester Square on Monday, June 23. Cruise and Pitt greeted each other with a tight hug before posing for photos side by side. 'Great night at the movies with my friends! You guys crushed it!' Cruise said on his Instagram page on Tuesday, June 24, showing a snap of them from the event. The F1 movie is co-produced by Pitt, seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, Apple Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer, the filmmaker behind Cruise's Top Gun Maverick. It also stars Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, and Javier Bardem, and was shot during actual Grand Prix weekends as the team competes against the titans of the sport. Dubbed 'the greatest that never was,' Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, Formula 1's most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he's a nomadic racer-for-hire when he's approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Bardem), owner of a struggling F1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to the race tracks for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He'll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Idris), the team's hotshot rookie, intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him and he finds that in Formula 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition — and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone. Cruise and Pitt last worked together in the 1994 film Interview With A Vampire where they respectively portrayed the roles of vampires Lestat and Louis. The Hollywood actors have yet to reunite on screen, but they had a public encounter in September 2001 during the America: A Tribute To Heroes benefit concert. Pitt earlier this month said he is open to working again on a project with Cruise but on one condition. 'I'm not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and s**t like that,' he said, referring to a scene from Cruise's Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning. 'So… when he does something again that's on the ground.' Cruise and Pitt, as disclosed by film director Joseph Kosinski, were supposed to reunite in the filmmaker's version of the racing drama Ford v Ferrari. However, the project was axed after the proposed budget was not approved. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network

Singapore tycoon Peter Lim and son Kiat drive Valencia's €322m stadium push with 2027 opening set
SINGAPORE, June 27 — Singapore tycoon Peter Lim is not stepping away from Valencia CF, as the Spanish football club announced it has secured €322 million (RM1.6 billion) in financing to complete its long-delayed new stadium, the Nou Mestalla. Scheduled to open in 2027, the 70,044-seat stadium will be Spain's fourth largest, behind the redeveloped Nou Camp, Santiago Bernabeu, and Metropolitano Stadium, according to a report in The Straits Times today. Valencia president Kiat Lim, Peter Lim's son, hailed the financing as a 'historic milestone', saying it would enable the club to deliver a 'world-class stadium' and reflects growing global investor confidence in the club. The financing includes a €237 million note issuance with a 28-year maturity and an €85 million five-year loan, which will be repaid using proceeds from the sale of the current Mestalla site. 'This new stadium is a game-changer — in revenue potential and fan experience,' said Kiat, who took over as president in March. Valencia president Kiat Lim, Peter Lim's son, hailed the financing as a 'historic milestone', saying it would enable the club to deliver a 'world-class stadium' and reflects growing global investor confidence in the club. — Picture from social media Valencia have played at the ageing Mestalla since 1923; construction of the new stadium began in 2007 but was halted in 2009 due to financial troubles, years before Peter Lim rescued the club from bankruptcy in 2014. Despite recent on-pitch struggles, Valencia still drew strong home crowds, averaging over 43,000 fans per game last season, with season ticket holders filling 90 per cent of seats. The Nou Mestalla will offer 6,500 hospitality seats, compared to fewer than 500 at the current ground, and is expected to more than triple the club's revenue through expanded hospitality, naming rights, and year-round events. The club also envisions the stadium becoming a multifunctional venue hosting entertainment, business, and leisure activities, helping transform it into a regional hub. Kiat said the venue will operate '365 days a year' and match the club's long-term vision, describing the project as more than just a stadium, but the 'future of Valencia CF'. Peter Lim's Meriton Holdings has committed over €200 million to the club, the most by a single investor in La Liga history, keeping Valencia financially stable and able to fund major projects like this. The stadium financing follows a corporate refinancing completed in November 2024, in which the club consolidated €186 million of debt, further strengthening its financial position.

Mbappe accuses PSG of harassment, French prosecutors open investigation
PARIS, June 27 — Kylian Mbappe has accused his former club Paris Saint-Germain of moral harassment in a legal filing, the Paris prosecutor's office told AFP on Thursday as it confirmed an investigation had been opened. France captain Mbappe is also embroiled in a court battle with PSG to obtain the €55 million (RM272 million) in unpaid wages and bonuses he says the club owes him. Mbappe's latest grievance is related to the way he was treated by PSG at the start of the 2023-24 season, when he was made to train with players the club were trying to offload. He believes he was sidelined by the club after refusing to agree a new contract, a practice which has also affected other footballers and prompted the French players' union to lodge a complaint last year. Mbappe was not invited to a 2023 pre-season tour of Asia and missed the first game of that season but was later restored to the team after holding talks with the club. The 26-year-old joined Real Madrid last summer after seven seasons with PSG. He scored 256 goals in 308 games for the French club, who won the Champions League last month for the first time following the striker's departure. — AFP
