Goldfields mascots take their marks for charity
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club will play host to an unusual foot chase this weekend.
The Rotary Club of Boulder's fifth annual mascot race will take place during Sunday's KBRC meeting to raise money and awareness for its Goldfields Family Assistance Fund.
The fund supports families travelling to and staying in Perth for their children's medical care.
Rotarian Stu Fleming said the mascot race never failed to be an entertaining affair.
'It was something we started to raise a bit of awareness for our Goldfields Family Assistance Fund,' he said.
'Hopefully parents bring their kids down to interact with the mascots and watch them run down the home straight.
'And we've got a few games planned in the marquee.'
The mascot race will take place after the $20,000 KB Cleaning Queens Maiden (1200m) which is scheduled for 1.55pm.
Mascots taking part in the race will include the Rotary club's Boulder Bear, Goldfields Children Charity's Timmy Bear, Goldfields Giants' Nugget, KBCCI's Kitty Kangaroo and the Kalgoorlie Miner's own Miner Mouse, among others.
Sunday's race meeting will also feature the Peter Palmer Memorial Handicap.
Mr Palmer served on several local boards and committees during his 22 years living in the Goldfields.

Region to host Footy For All Roadshow
Inclusive football opportunities will be promoted in Kalgoorlie-Boulder next week as part of a 2025 Footy For All Goldfields Roadshow, on behalf of the WA All Abilities Football Association. The program, starting on Monday, will showcase WAAAFA's ongoing commitment to providing football for all skills and ability levels while breaking down barriers and connecting communities through sport. It will be launched on Monday night with a wheelchair footy experience — touted among Australia's fastest-growing and most inclusive formats of the game. Wheelchair footy enables people with and without disability to compete alongside each other, removing physical barriers and promoting true inclusion, teamwork, and fun. On Tuesday, students from Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School and Eastern Goldfields Education Support Centre will take part in Kickability clinics during periods one to three. They will be followed by students from O'Connor Education Support Centre that afternoon, with the clinics designed to introduce children with disabilities to football in a safe, supportive, and highly adaptable environment. Each session is designed to build confidence, co-ordination, and connection, with many students experiencing structured football for the first time. 'Footy For All is exactly that — football for everyone, regardless of ability,' WAAAFA executive officer Hayden Marchetto said. 'We are committed to ensuring that children and families in every part of WA have access to sport in a way that meets their needs. 'This program wouldn't happen without the outstanding support of Northern Star Resources; the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries; and Country Footy WA, whose shared commitment to inclusion is helping us create real change.' The Footy For All program continues to grow Statewide, ensuring people living with disability have genuine pathways into sport — whether through Kickability, wheelchair footy or broader inclusion initiatives — while strengthening community participation throughout WA.

Faithfull lands two more winners at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club
Natasha Faithfull's pursuit of jockey of the year honours at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club remains on track after she booted home two winners at Sunday's meeting. Faithfull opened the seven-event card with victory aboard the Stephanie Bakranich-trained Stryker's Gal ($2.50 favourite). She followed-up in the next race with Think Lika Winner ($3.50), for trainer Ted Martinovich. It boosted her season tally at the KBRC to 10 points — three clear of Lucy Fiore, who scored with the Peter Fernie-trained On Just Terms ($6) in the last race of the day. Also on Sunday, Helen Harding runner Ultimate Paradise (Zephen Johnston-Porter) won at $31 over 1200m. Harding is second, behind Fernie, for trainer of the year. Action at the KBRC resumes on June 15.

Japanese star keen for success at Golden Open
Japanese squash professional Risa Sugimoto is hopeful of going one better against a crack field at this weekend's annual Northern Star Golden Open. Kalgoorlie-Boulder's premier squash tournament this year features players from nine different countries who are chasing $6000 prizemoney in each of the women's and men's divisions. Sugimoto is fresh off an epic final of the South Australian Open in Adelaide, when the 30-year-old was beaten in five games by Hong Kong's Toby Tse (9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 11-8). This week Sugimoto has focused on her recovery before her opening round on Friday, when she will have to win two games to make it through to the semifinals. 'In last week's tournament, I was lucky enough to perform better than I previously had been, making it through to the finals,' Sugimoto said. 'This week, I want to work through my fatigue and try to perform through my fatigue to allow me to perform at my best on the first day of the tournament, which is hard with two matches to win.' Sugimoto is hoping to use the Goldfields event to boost her ranking which will assist her chances in getting a call-up for the 2026 Asian Games. 'I am aiming to get my PSA ranking inside the world top-100,' she said. 'Next year I want to qualify for the Asian Games with the target of winning a medal.' The No.4 seed, Sugimoto will take on Ka Huen Leung from Hong Kong in her first round. Sugimoto is enjoying the contrast between Kalgoorlie-Boulder and her hometown Kyoto. 'It's very relaxed, very quiet (in Kalgoorlie-Boulder) and good for recovery,' she said. 'In Kyoto there is so much traffic and people everywhere.' The top-three women's seeds are Helen Tang (China), Akari Midorikawa (Japan), and Wong Po Yui Kirstie (China). Among a strong men's field, Sri Lanka's Ravindu Laksiri is the No.1 seed from Pakistan's Hamza Khan, and the Chinese duo of Wailok To and Ming Hong Tan. Queenslander Brendan MacDonald is the highest-seeded Australian at No.11. The Northern Star Golden Open gets under way on Friday from 10am at Ray Finlayson Sporting Complex and continues on Saturday and Sunday.
