Kensington Palace Issues Clarification Following Reporting on Kate Middleton's Clothes
Since the Sunday Times reported last week that the Princess of Wales wanted the focus on her work not her wardrobe and Kensington Palace would no longer be releasing details of her outfits, the story has sparked intense coverage globally. News and opinion pieces on the matter have continued to such an extent that Kensington Palace clearly felt moved to clarify the situation, issuing a message from a spokesperson today.
'Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding The Princess of Wales's clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits,' the message read. 'To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales. The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to The Princess of Wales. To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness's clothing.'
The message is unusual as it involves the couple's spokesperson referencing themselves, and indeed revealing themselves to be a source for the Sunday Times piece. They were quoted in the newspaper as saying that the Princess 'wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting.' The newspaper had also said that the Palace would no longer release details of Kate's outfits, something that Palace has now clarified with this statement.
The interest in Kate's fashion has always been intense, and has the ability to transform the fortunes of brands to the extend that the phenomenon has been dubbed The Kate Effect. Often, royal style choices are also credited with communicating messages beyond fashion, such as wearing an emblem or color to diplomatically honor a host or guest or to draw attention to a particular cause.
This is not the first time that the conversation about whether or not Kensington Palace will share details of Kate's outfits has come to the fore. Back in 2019, Royal Correspondent Richard Palmer sparked interest with his tweet about the fact Kensington Palace had declined to say what the Princess was wearing to an engagement—something which up until that point it had become standard to share with journalists covering the event.
Those following the royals when Kate first joined the Firm in 2011 may remember that at the very beginning of her royal life Kensington Palace didn't say what she was wearing and this resulted in online bloggers often being the first to identify an outfit. In some cases, there was uncertainly about whether or not a designer had been correctly named, which is possibly what prompted Kensington Palace to start passing on details.
T&C understands that the situation remains as it has done for some time, which is that the Palace will sometimes release outfit details but not always.

Is Carlos Alcaraz dating anyone? Here's what we know.
Carlos Alcaraz has ascended to the top of the tennis world, with wins in three of the four Grand Slams and -- as of publishing this -- a spot in the 2025 French Open finals. As for his personal life? We know for sure he's not married and despite rumors about someone he's dating, it seems like he's still single. Advertisement As you might recall, he said this to Vogue way back in 2023: 'It's complicated, never staying in one place ... It's hard to find the person who can share things with you if you're always in different parts of the world.' In 2024, he said this via the Sunday Times: 'I am single. I am looking for someone. It can be difficult as a tennis player to meet the right person because you are travelling all the time.' And in 2025? There doesn't seem to be any news about a significant other at the moment.
