'We didn't think we stood a chance! But when they announced we were ranked ninth, we couldn't believe it. We were very, very proud. And after we received the award, our business boomed,' Liew shared with FMT Lifestyle.

Mikias Tadesse, 29, recalled how his mushroom curiosity turned his life around, from a truck driver to a successful mushroom farmer, ultimately promoting a culinary change in Ethiopia. Tadesse's curiosity began about three years ago upon his first encounter with a fleshy cluster of sprouted mushrooms in the backyard of a Chinese road construction camp in a remote village in southern Ethiopia. "Intrigued by a sight foreign to my Ethiopian culinary experience and out of curiosity, I decided to try a mushroom dish prepared by the Chinese chefs. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the dish," said Tadesse. Tadesse also found the vast potential of mushrooms to diversify Ethiopia's culinary landscape and bolster food security, thanks to their ease of cultivation and quick harvest cycle. He then discussed the idea of starting mushroom cultivation with his Chinese colleagues. "Their response was immediate and very encouraging. They fully supported my business idea and promised to assist me in this new venture." "From the very beginning, the Chinese agricultural experts have been the lifeline of my mushroom farm. They provided me with extensive technical knowledge through hands-on training and material support, including quality spawns that are necessary to navigate the delicate process of fungal cultivation," he said. Tadesse's biggest challenge, however, was the public's unfamiliarity with mushrooms in Ethiopia. "I faced major market resistance because most people simply did not see mushrooms as food," he said. "Even though I knew some restaurants and hotels in Addis Ababa served dishes with mushrooms, I had to visit nearly every supermarket and hotel to promote my products. Initially, I received countless rejections and skepticism," he recalled. After many attempts, his persistence finally paid off. Despite the minimal demand from their customers, some supermarkets agreed to stock his mushrooms. During the first six months, Tadesse often retrieved nearly half of the mushrooms from their shelves after three or four days. Gradually, he started to notice the growing demand for mushrooms as the orders from his partner supermarkets increased. Buoyed by growing demand, he expanded his farm to four mushroom cultivation sheds, each spanning 250 square meters. Today, the young entrepreneur cultivates vibrant Yellow mushrooms, King Trumpets, and Oyster mushrooms. "Though our farm produces an average of 50 kg of different varieties of mushrooms and has 12 dedicated workers, we are struggling to meet the growing demand," Tadesse said. Although he has found success in mushroom cultivation, he remains deeply grateful to the Chinese experts. "Their support forms the foundation of our farm and business. From securing premium Chinese spawns to providing cutting-edge technical knowledge and tools, their assistance has been transformative." Zheng Aibao, 59, who specializes in mushroom cultivation, is among the eight Chinese agricultural experts working in Ethiopia. "This is my third time in Ethiopia. I am glad to see the mushroom cultivation method introduced by Chinese experts is taking root in five farms in the country," said Zheng. As for Tadesse, his long-term goal is to deepen his knowledge of mushroom cultivation and start exporting processed mushrooms. "I believe that with coordinated efforts from both government and private sectors, mushrooms will end up on more dinner tables across Ethiopia and really help add variety to what people eat," Tadesse said.

UM lecturers use picture books to teach children about money

'One day,' he said, 'I want to work, make money, and build a house. Not just for me but for my parents, my siblings, and my uncle, so we can all live together.' He wasn't just echoing the lesson of the book, in which children give their savings to their parents; he was going further. The boy envisioned financial independence not as a personal goal, but as a way of uplifting his entire family. This powerful moment unfolded during a financial literacy workshop by Universiti Malaya (UM) lecturers Shalini Nadaswaran and Vandana Saxena, who use picture books to teach seven- to nine-year-olds about saving, spending and planning. 'It's personal for both of us,' said Shalini. 'We're mothers, and we see how children today are surrounded by advertising. They know how to spend but don't necessarily understand the value of money.' Shalini, whose academic work centres on African women's literature, and Vandana, who specialises in children's and young-adult fiction, saw how picture books could bridge economic theory and lived experience. 'When we read picture books through the lens of literary criticism, especially around economics, we started seeing connections,' Vandana, an Indian national, explained. 'We wanted to bring this into real communities – especially with children from vulnerable backgrounds.' Their 1.5-hour workshop began with a simple question: what would you do with RM100? 'Some wanted cars, jewellery, designer clothes. Others said ice cream. And some, especially from more vulnerable backgrounds, had no idea how money is earned,' Shalini recalled. Then came the read-aloud session – 'The Berenstain Bears' Let's Talk About Money'. The story follows two bear siblings who spend recklessly, and learn to earn and save. But it's what happened after the story that really matters. The same RM100 question was posed again – and this time, there was a shift. 'One girl who initially wanted to buy jewellery suddenly said she would make her own and sell it,' Shalini shared. 'Another boy said he'd now save his money in a bank – because otherwise, he might lose it.' The children begin to grasp not just the idea of money, but the principles of earning and saving. 'You could see the wheels turning in their minds. They were beginning to think about money in ways they hadn't before.' So far, Shalini and Vandana have conducted just two workshops – one at a school and another at an orphanage – since they started early this year. A recurring challenge, they pointed out, is the lack of locally relevant picture books. 'There are certain things that are very Asian, like charity and giving to the poor,' Vandana explained. 'We do not see these in the books we use, even though these are different kinds of value systems we need to pay attention to.' So, they're laying the groundwork to write and curate their own content – 'something more localised for children so that, when they read the books, the setting is familiar and the understanding becomes easier'. But why teach children about money at all? 'It's an everyday reality,' Vandana noted. 'We need to mould them to have an understanding of money. Our children can't be stooges of capitalism.' This is where storytelling becomes key: it's not just about understanding money – it's about the experience of listening, and of imagining different choices. 'The children were spellbound when we read out loud,' Shalini said. 'You get kids with different levels of understanding. So, you must meet everyone's needs.' They hope to scale the project to more schools, orphanages, NGOs, and Orang Asli communities. Acknowledging their limits, Shalini and Vandana are creating free digital resources – lesson plans, story-based activities, and teacher guides – so others can run the programme even without them. Both lecturers ultimately believe financial literacy starts at home. 'Be open. Talk about spending, saving, earning. Children understand more than we give them credit for,' said Shalini. But this openness doesn't mean saying 'yes' to everything. 'Even simple lines like 'that's expensive, let's revisit this later' can build habits. It moves children away from instant gratification.'

Traditional Vietnam tailoring village weaves cultural heritage into economic growth

In 2024, Trach Xa's Ao Dai, Vietnam's traditional long dress, tailoring craft was listed as a Vietnamese national intangible cultural heritage, marking a turning point for the thousand-year-old village. "Since the recognition, business has improved significantly," said Vu Thi Hang, a local tailor with 14 years of experience. "Our Ao Dai are now showcased at exhibitions and fairs, and more people know about Trach Xa." "Some shops send us fabric and request up to 1,000 dresses per order, often for hotel staff or flight attendants," she said, adding that her income has risen to around 20 to 30 million Vietnam Dong (about US$790 to 1,185) monthly, excluding material and labor costs. Tourism is also emerging as a driver. "We've begun receiving both domestic and international tour groups," Hang said. "The government has conducted surveys and plans to promote tourism in this area." According to local officials, currently, over 100 households in the village engage in Ao Dai production, most from home, while others have opened shops under the Trach Xa brand in nearby provinces. Le Van Duan, who began sewing in 1988, said that preserving the tradition depends on making it economically viable for the next generation. To expand beyond the village, Vietnamese artisans are also embracing e-commerce. "Some tailors now sell their Ao Dai online, combining traditional hand-stitching with digital platforms," said cultural researcher Tran Doan Lam, former director of The Gioi (World) Publishers. Lam noted that fashion programs at Vietnamese universities such as the University of Industrial Fine Arts and the University of Culture are cultivating new talent in ethnic costume design. "Culture is both a goal and a driving force for economic development and national progress," Lam said.
