Texas softball tops Texas Tech 2-1 in bizarre Game 1 of NCAA Championship Series
The Women's College World Series Championship Series certainly didn't lack drama in Game 1 of the best of three series. In the end, the Texas Longhorns outlasted Texas Tech 2-1 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
The game was a pretty standard pitchers duel through four innings. But in the top of the fifth inning, things got weird. Tech's Logan Helleman, on first base after a UT infield error, attempted to steal second, but was thrown out by Texas catcher Reese Atwood. The call was overturned on video review because of obstruction on Texas infielder Leighann Goode. It was ruled Goode's toe was an inch too far into the basepath, even though her foot wasn't close to the runner.
Tech capitalized as Mihyia Davis' bloop a single into shallow right field scored Halleman from second. The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead and the way Tech starting pitcher NiJaree Canady was dominating, it looked like a dark night for the burnt orange.
But the weirdness wasn't over. In the bottom of the sixth. Canady had struck out the first two batters in the inning when Kayden Henry slashed a hit to left. She then stole second. Mia Scott reached on an infield hit and also stole second. Texas had runners at second and third with Atwood coming up.
Atwood is one of the most feared hitters in college softball, but she is hitless in the postseason. Tech coach Gerry Glasco called for an intentional walk. Canady hasn't thrown an intentional walk all season. Atwood watched the first three pithes go high, but the fourth pitch was low enough to be hittable. Atwood lined the 3-0 pitch into center field plating Henry and Scott to give Texas a 2-1 lead.
That was all Teagan Kavan needed in the Top of the 7th. Kavan allowed a base runner, but still got three outs and the complete game win.
Texas now leads the series 1-0. Game 2 is set for tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CT.

Armed with Arch Manning, Texas is ‘Stacked with Talent,' Says SEC Assistant
Armed with Arch Manning, Texas is 'Stacked with Talent,' Says SEC Assistant originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas fans have been looking forward to the Arch Manning era ever since Peyton and Eli's nephew committed to the Longhorns in 2022. Advertisement Texas is the only team in the country to have reached the College Football Playoff in 2023 and '24, even though Manning played sparingly. And still, the word out of Austin, Las Vegas and around the SEC is that Manning has the goods to win the Heisman Trophy and deliver the 'Horns their first national championship in 20 years. 'Right now, the belief is that Arch [Manning] will elevate the offense immediately, and you can expect a much more dynamic scheme from Sark [Steve Sarkisian],' an anonymous SEC assistant coach said in Athlon Sports' 2025 College Football Preview magazine. 'This kid is a legit, Heisman-level package. Provided he produces at that level, the offense will be even better. They're stacked with talent.' These comments were made in Texas' exclusive scouting report in Athlon's annual magazine, which is available for purchase online and at newsstands nationwide. Texas quarterback Arch Manning went 2-0 as the team's starter in 2024 with Quinn Ewers E. Martinez/American-Statesman-Imagn Images Expectations for Manning are high, given that the Longhorns made the CFP semifinals in consecutive seasons. However, the Longhorns did lose several key players to the NFL. Left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. and leading receiver Matthew Golden were both taken in the first round of the draft. Tight end Gunnar Helm went in the fourth, and quarterback Quinn Ewers was selected in the seventh. Advertisement Texas averaged 30-plus points per game over the past three seasons with Ewers under center. Manning — the top-ranked player in his recruiting class — might take things to another level with the addition of tight end Jack Endries (Cal) and wide receiver Emmett Mosley V (Stanford) coming to Texas via the transfer portal. The Longhorns also beefed up their defensive front on the transfer market with the addition of Maraad Watson (Syracuse), Cole Brevard (Purdue) and Travis Shaw (North Carolina). They'll be joining forces with All-Americans Colin Simmons and Anthony Hill Jr. in the front seven. Only three teams had more sacks a season ago than Texas, which finished No. 3 in scoring defense. Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian landed the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2025 Roberts-Imagn Images 'They could have one of the best defensive lines in the entire country,' the SEC assistant said. 'They have next-level pass rushers and the size and physicality to win against the run.' Advertisement Sarkisian signed the No. 1 high school recruiting class this past cycle, further evidence that heis building a sustainable winner in Austin amid a constantly changing college football landscape. 'This program is one of the most effectively run in terms of personnel, NIL and the new era of the sport,' the assistant coach said. 'If Manning blows up and goes to the league next year, this is still the program to chase. They're professionalizing in a way other programs aren't.' Texas lands first DT commitment from four-star Dylan Berymon
Texas Longhorns have landed their first defensive tackle commitment of the 2026 recruiting class. Four-star, 6-foot-2, 320 pound Dylan Berymon of Louisiana has picked Texas over LSU, Purdue, Houston and North Carolina. Defensive tackle is a position of need for UT. Berymon is great start to a solid defensive tackle class. With a strong base and upfield push, Berymon should be an anchor at nose tackle, clogging up the middle to stop the run. Advertisement Recruiting analysts had pegged Berymon as a future Boilermaker because of some pre-exhisting relationships. But in the end, Texas won out. He will join former Boilermaker and likely 2025 Texas starter Cole Brevard in the DT room. On3's Industry Rankings have Berymon ranked as the No. 172 overall prospect, the No. 19 defensive linema and the No. 8 player in Louisiana. Texas also has a pledge from Louisiana defensive back Hayward Howard. If both players end up signing, they would join Arch Manning, Derek Williams, Wardell Mack and Will Randle from The Boot.
